Can I ask why it is apparently perfectly acceptable for certain members of this site to act in a persistently childish and offensive manner, yet other less privileged members who behave in the same way get moderated or banned?

Without naming names or pointing fingers, I would like to point a finger at flash@tmb who regularly makes posts that could be described as "cuntish" in nature and actually break the terms and condistions, yet seems to be immune to censorship.

Can I buy immunity too? How much does it cost?

It is not "perfectly acceptable"' date=' as you put it, to act in this manner. If someone breaks the site rules and is either caught by a moderator or reported by a member, then they will be dealt with, most likely in private. Occasionally there may be one or two examples of unreasonable behaviour that slip through the net at the time, but they usually get dealt with eventually.

You mean, by actually pointing fingers and naming names, then? No-one is immune, and everyone should follow the terms and conditions of use which they agreed to abide by when they joined the site. I'm not going to comment on private matters between members and staff. Moderation tends to take place via PM, not on the thread(s) in question.[/quote']

Sorry but that is clearly bullshit. I've reported offensive posts and fuck all has happened, it's just cronyism.

So how would you know if fuck all has happened.

Everyone says you're paranoid, but I wouldn't worry about it.

Cronyism? Settle down. Are you really suggesting that all the mods go easy on certain users because they're mates? Well, I'm not speaking for anyone else, but as for myself I try to take context into consideration. For example Flash's post which you reported is in my view not offensive. Yes, he says the words 'fuck off' but if you read the whole post including the quote then the bad words are not directly offensive to anyone. He even explains his intent a couple of posts later to make it clearer. I can promise you though that if he did break the rules I'd have no problem warning, suspending or banning him exactly the same as anyone else.

There's no instruction manual for the mods to learn, we're all individuals and we make our own decisions as we see fit. Voluntarily. If we're not coming up to scratch, that's Neil's call. He can have my name badge and delete button back any time he sees fit.

It's true that a lot of moderating is done behind the scenes, eg by PM to the user concerned, or discussed in the Staff Forum. This way avoids more arguments flaring up involving people not concerned in the original issue.

I'm not exactly known for socialising with other board users, so I can say pretty surely that personal friendship does not affect my moderating decisions. In fact, from memory the only two people I've ever actually banned from here have both been from the small group of people that I have met.

it's just cronyism.

This whole website is full of cronyism of poor bands being hyped beyond what is reasonable due to the high presence of their mates on here. Its nothing to get upset about it just the way the scene works with certain bands getting the better local gigs due to having a bigger following despite being inferior to some other local bands who don't do quite as well.

Sounds about right, yeah.

The only real difference is that some bands are completely unashamed to admit that they have lots of mates, whereas other bands try and pretend that they don't rely on their mates. It's amusing, really.

The whole music business is based on friendships/relationships in some way pretty much, hence the whole its not what you know it's who you know, I'm not sure I've seen too many people here denying that they've had friends/contacts help them out. I'm not sure the arguement holds though as I very much doubt any band could last purely on their friends.

Cheers

Stuart

The best way to kill trolls is to stop feeding them. From now on I shall limit my anti-troll campaign to quoting the trolls post' date=' followed by the following statement "DO NOT FEED THE TROLL".

Please don't. Just ignore him. You're not a moderator on this site so please don't try and control what people post.

Stripey isn't anonymous, there's a few people (myself included) who know who he is. Just because you don't know who he is, doesn't make him a troll. There's no rule on this site that says Flash at the moorings has to know you before you can have an argument on Aberdeen Music.

Just ignore him

OK I've gone through the members list and put half a dozen people on ignore. The only problem is that you still catch snippets when those people are quoted by others.

While we are on the subject it would be nice if it were possible to ban certain individuals from certain forums.

Sponsors should be seen and not heard.(and tell him I'm not Stripey either!) heh! :)

Oh great... I set someone to ignore and I still get emails containing their worthwhile additions to the thread.

If you want people to leave the trolls in peace then please fix the ignore function so that it works properly.

Can you post a thread about this in the technical problems forum? Then when Neil gets back up to speed after moving he'll have a look at it.
