Bass Cadet
Well I haven't seen the offending cartoon, but it strikes me that maybe some people took a joke a bit over-serously and got offended. Silly really!I'm not religious and therfore I think it's fine to blaspheme. Religious people should respect the opinions of others instead of dictating their way all the time, or throwing wobblers for no reason. The idea of religion is proposterous to anyone who wasn't brought up with it, but seems to be imperitive to those who were........weird
JJ 10 Easy Wishes
the very idea that in the year 2006 people kill other people because they believe in STORIES is just fucking bizarre. Jeeeeeeez it's a made up picture of some guy that lots of people think exists. Hopefully those opposed draw up some cartoons of god and see if all the christians hate them too. then we can have a big old war! or everyone could just leave everyone to believe in what they believe in. i'm offended Bass Cadet. I believe in dragonism and therefore cannot believe you have a picture of the great king dragon the third as your avatar. don't you know that the 4th of law of dragonism is that you cannot dispay pictures of the great king dragon the third?!!!!!!!!!! HairyScaryMark
I don't see any reason why a government should apologise for the actions of it's citizens. An Independent columnist wrote an opinion article titled 'Isn't it enough that blapshemers will rot in hell?'. Followers of most religions will believe that people will be punished for their sins in hell, that should be enough for them.
Guest MerryChristmas
Over 1000 different cartoon strips are published in newspapers throughout europe each day!
Guest Neubeatz
Yes like only crazy nutter fanatic fundamentalist religious freekers would even think of calling this the year 2006 for anything else but a non religious reason ...huh? Paulscoconutass
I can't believe that the fuss has only made British shores this week. The cartoons were published in Denmark about 4 months ago and I think Norway re-published them soon after with a story and got the same treatment. Saudi-Arabia even pulled their ambassador out of Denmark because the weren't happy with government's (not the papers) apology regarding the comic. It's completely insane, politicians and celebrities are caricatured every day and nothing happens, most don't even begin law suits because it's just water off a ducks back, and so much for freedom of the press. Granted if I was a Muslim I’d be offended, but to be talking about bombings and murders is far too extreme. Look at how South Park portray god:I believe Matt and Trey are still alive and well. Guest b-bert
people of all religions seem to take things too seriously, i mean when some churches protested about life of brian. nomatter who you are or what you do you will be criticised or made fun of so why do people not just accept it and get on with their lives instead of rioting. Rasputin
I would say it perhaps was a stupid thing to have done. Everyone knows the trouble we are having in the world with Islamic Extremists, this has just fallen right into the hands of these organisations who are seeking to recruit more followers. ITs pointless and should not have happened, a giant can of woop ass trouble has been opened just because some paper thought it would be amusing. A bit of common sense would not go a stray. Fair enough, in the West we dont take things so seriously, but surely this Danish paper knew it was going to upset and insult Islam by publishing them. le weez
but the important question here is how big is the parrot?
EchelonDivision
I believe that no-one should have the right not to be offended. It's freedom of speech for fucks sake! What some people find offensive, others find funny! And, as for inciting religious hatred... WTF? How can a cartoon change your opinion?? We are all free-thinking humans. We dont have to believe everthing we see and hear!!The whole thing is ridiculous. PS. I wouldn't trust that parrot. A Macaws beak can open a brasil nut with minimal effort! Rasputin
You have got to remeber where these countries are...they dont lookat things in the same light as us. Its all very well saying were free thinking and Human...but these countries are very very serious when it comes to there religion...its a bit like Israel claiming they have a right to be int he holy land because it was gifted to them by god. Israel will defend that right no matter what, including having a scorched earth policy with there nukes. The point is, why risk it?
Hog
While people from other faiths i.e. Christianity, Hinduism etc have had the piss taken in the press, they may of been offended but have not reacted like this. It is not the cartoonists fault if certain Islamic people cant handle others questioning their religion and have to take draconian reactions. Boohoo, your offended. Its not before time that, like any other religion, people have questioned/taken the piss out of its viability.

It a bit like the Danes slagging Scotland off, in the eyes of some of these Islamists. I just dont think there was any need for it really. Yeah i agree its been blown out of proportion, no sane person can argue against that...my point is this was entirly avoidable.
Paulscoconutass
Surely if Muslims are kidnapping at gunpoint as a reaction to a cartoon they're either playing up to the satire or can't se the irony. Yesterday gunmen in the West Bank were combing hotels for Europeans and storming EU buildings in the Gaza. Norway's closed it's diplomatic office and journalists/diplomats are giving Palestine a wide birth.I see the situation is entireley different in Germany where several papers have printed the cartoon on the front, or inner three, pages for several days in a row."Religious fundamentalists who don't respect the difference between satire and blasphemy have a problem, not only with Denmark, but with the entire Western world" - Allgemein Zeitung (German Newspaper Editor)
Rasputin
Fair point butIslamic law, based on clerics' interpretation of the Quran and the sayings of the prophet, forbids depictions of the Prophet Muhammad and other major religious figures even positive ones to prevent idolatry. Shiite Muslim clerics differ in that they allow images of their greatest saint, Ali, the prophet's son-in-law, though not Muhammad. Its a fundamental part of there religion. Of course it going to annoy them. And I agree with you as well that it is being used, as another excuse to preach anti western sentiments. This problem was avoidable but why avoid it? Are people not allowed an opinion?Of course people are allowed to voice there opinions...but Islam is the most popular religion in the world, while all others seem in decline. Islam is a religion, which is influening world politics and the policy of whole countries. These extremist nut jobs are trying to find an excuse to rally as many of th emuslim world together, so it becomes a war against the west, a war of ideology. All I am saying is we should bear this in mind in the future. There is no point in alienating ppl for the sake of a laugh. Yes they are over reacting but, they dont thin they are. They think this is some sort of conspiracy to belittle Islam. Iwould be interested to hear an Islamic persons point of view if there are any who visit this forum??? I think its one big misunderstanding. They cant understand why we in the west would find depictions of there prophet funny, while we cant understand why they dont find it funny and take it so seriously. I think this is somethign which needs to be worke don. We need to bridge this gap, to help make the world a brighter palce.
