Guest Mr Blastcap

the financial side of this issue really interests me, years ago i saw spiritualized at the music hall it was a good show but really the place was practically empty just about quarter full on the floor. It was a shit choice of venue, and no way could it have made money. i suppose it comes down to the fact that "big" touring bands are unapproachable, you have to deal with management and associated big fish promoters-thats the problem. allthough a while ago i got in touch with billions corporation (loads of big-ish name obscure bands) but even a band like girls against boys would have left me looking at paying about five six hundred quid just to get going!

whats wrong with selling out a decent venue thats small, i'd prefer to pay 50 quid to see oasis in the tunnells, than 30 to see them in the aberdeen cattle shed.

anyhow, jim's right, theres better stuff going on in aberdeen than the occasional "name" act.

I would say Dundee have the most talented bands in Scotland at the moment; Laeto' date=' Spyamp, Uncle Fritz, Perineum, Fall of Boss Koala, and Alamos. All doing very well for themselves, especially Alamos by all accounts.[/quote']

Cheers. Check out some of the other ace bands from Dundee:

they didn't get a cash handout of tens of millions from the council to build the place.

The exhibition centre was bailed out to the tune of 26million in 2005 exactly a week after telling council employees they were having their wages axed by a huge ammount....

I would bulldose the place if it were up to me.

Don't want to come across as a pedant' date=' and I guess this doesn't add anything to the thread, but wasn't the Dylan show in 2000? ;)[/quote']

Was it really that long ago? Jesus I'm getting old...

I think I might have seen the Stereophonics there since then. I didn't want to go, my girlfriend made me....

PS Just a footnote about the Music Hall - I saw Skunk Anansie there in 1996 and it was one of the best gigs I've ever been to in my life.

But they are expectingfor tens/hundreds of thousands of 's of our money to keep it open! And our wise old backwater regressive thinking retard of a council only go and fucking agree...

I guess the current administration didn't have much choice - they could hardly pull the plug on the funding (the outroar from the business community would be scary)' date=' but by funding it further, they've set themselves up for being criticised for spending money in such a way. I would assume that there's an element of political power in there - given the fact that the council is ran by a coalition, if the Lib Dems had refused to put up the money, they could've been screwed if the Tory part of the coalition had walked out on them as a result.

The way I see it is that the AECC shouldn't be seen as a concert venue, but rather as a corporate venue. The failing with it is that it doesn't have enough hotel accomodation, and the entire area isn't up to much as far as big name companies being there - so it's failing in a lot of respects really.

Fuck the big bands, there are dozens of great and better small bands plaing in town every month!!! But then those folk that buy charts hit compilation and Madonna albums to sit by the toaster in the kitchen for fondue's and dinner parties aren't that bothered about going to see something their neighbours haven't heard of...

can't say I disagree with that, it's frightening to see what could be done with 18 million. But I guess 5 small venues wouldn't bring the power, therefore it wouldn't be politically worth their while. We've already seen the hammering they got for the Lemon Tree needing bailed out, so I guess it's down to the business community to do something about it, not the council.

Whether or not the business community is compatible with the arts is another thing ;)

Im not too sure in the wisdom of ploughing so much money into something that only benefits the oil/gas industry whos future in Aberdeen is limited to say the least......

Its a huge white elephant and the tax payers of Aberdeen are being asked to supply the sticky buns.

Skunk Anansie was a great gig. Met all the band apart from Skin. Ace was a genuinely nice bloke.

I don't like attending the AECC that much because it is basically a shithole. Yeah, it got revamped but its still one of the number one places in Aberdeen to get stabbed.

However, I went to see both Franz and Oasis, and I'm not really a Franz fan. Its just a novelty that a realtively 'famous' band comes up here. Obvioulsly from a financial point of view (like someone said) Aberdeen is not worth it. It is just exciting if the do.

And just for the banter, I would go and see the Strokes if they came.

No, I think the whole setup is a disaster too. They should've looked at the SECC and realised that having a combined conference/concert facility is a bad idea, and so should've built seperate areas to house both of them. Unfortunately, I can't see them backing a new purpose built arena now, leaving the AECC itself to concentrate on exhibitions and conferences.

Aberdeen has a good history of cocking things up though, look at the Linx Ice Arena - what genius decided to build the place with a dismal seating capacity, ensuring that it'll never get used for a decent level of hockey? A decent amount of seats would've made the place somewhat viable for gigs too, and would give Aberdeen the 2500-ish capacity venue that it badly needs.

Ah, i didn't realise that Avast were from Dundee, they are great.

Saw One Inch Volcano at T Break many years ago, and wasn't that impressed. But i will check them out see what they sound like nowadays

About to check out the other bands too, pretty sure i've heard Eye before and kinda liked them.
