I got to work and started itching, thinking 'Is Takk the best album this year?'. It's actually been a pretty damn good year for releases in my opinion, here's my favourites:

Dirty Three - Cinder

Low - Great Destroyer

Einsturzende Neubauten - Grundsteuck

Bikini Atoll - Liar's Exit

Final Fantasy - Has A Good Home

LCD Soundsystem - LCD Soundsystem

M Ward - Transistor Radio

Alec Empire - Futurist

Les Georges Leningrad - Sur Les Traces Du Black Eskimo

Iron and Wine / Calexico - In The Reins

Desc - Jack In The Box

Raveonettes - Pretty In Black

Clor - Clor

King Automatic - Automatic Ray

Gorillaz - Demon Days

Broken Family Band - Welcome Home Loser

Kid Carpet - Ideas and Oh Dears

65daysofstatic - One Time For All Time

Thomas Truax - Audio Addiction

The Kills - No Wow

Sons And Daughters - The Repulsion Box

Psapp - Tiger, My Friend

Smog - A River Ain't Too Much To Love

Alabama 3 - Outlaw

Broken Social Scene - Feel Good Lost

Sod it, I've realised - Takk is a frankly amazing album, but it's overshadowed by a January release. I've listened to this album so much it feels like it's been in my collection forever, so it's got to win over everything for me:

Bonnie Prince Billy and Matt Sweeney - Superwolf

the BPB lp is good, but a few too many "fillers" on it for my liking...but "blood embrace" makes up for all that....

now...hmm...

I always find these lists hard to compile...

#1 = Jamie Lidell - multiply (just a wonderful lp..what more can I say?)

and the rest (in no order...I don't think) :

silver jews : tanglewood numbers

james yorkstone : hoopoe

various : dream Brother (jeff & tim buckley tribute CD)

murcof : remembranza

calexico / iron & wine : in the reins (good choice NullMouse)

jose gonzales : vaneer (or was that late last year?)

Clutch : robot hive/exodus

pelican : The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon The Thaw

mathew herburt : plat de Jour

buck 65 : Secret House Against The World

polar bear : Held On The Tips Of Fingers

Hanne Hukkelberg : little things

65daysofstatic : One Time For All Time (again, good choice)

four tet : everything ecstatic

quasimoto : The Further Adventures Of Lord Quas

tom vek : we have sound

fantomas : suspended animation

OM : variations on a theme

EARTH : remixes

a few duffers I bought :

caribou : milk of human kindnes

autechre : untitled

saul williams : saul williams

NIN : with teeth

Boards of Canada : The Campfire Headphase - not too bad, but not brilliant.

macrocosmica - farewell to earth

logh - a sunset panorama

ASVA - futurists against the ocean (more for the ace show than the record!)

I'm predictable and say the wonderful "Songs from Despair" by The Freaks Union on Deck Cheese Records. To me, there is no one in the UK or US who plays melodic hardcore punk with such great melodies and harmonies. Amazing lyrics too.

Can't think of any other albums from 2005 that have blown me away from the top of my head.

I'll not pass comment of Takk as I can't stand the buggers. Saw them support Godspeed a while back (zzzzzzzzzzzz).

However my albums of the year?

Summer in the Southeast - Bonnie 'Prince' Billy (like lepeep says Blood Embrace is brilliant but some so so stuff also). Obviously.

Illinois - Sufjan Stevens

The Lark Descending - Chris Woods (a bit too much filler but Lord Bateman and John Barleycorn are the cats tits).

No Earthly Man - Alasdair Roberts

Also, much as I love (smog) I found 'A river...' unsatisfying (apart from The Well).

Not this year but Stephen Scott's 'New Music for the bowed Piano' (with the Colorado College New Music Ensemble) is pretty damn good (for 1994 - Thanks to Late Junction)
