PAPER CUT OUT (jealous records) return....

'short sharp bursts of spazzy, jazzy, off-kilter post-punk - immediately afterwards the crowd turn and look at each other as if to say whoa..what was that?!...

'With the same urgency of early Fugazi or Nation of Ulysses, the rhythmic thrust of Sweep The Leg Johnny and the tightly controlled chaos of a free-jazz combo off their faces on something nasty, over the course of two short sharp electric shock's Newcastle's Paper Cut Out stake their claim as one of the most exciting new bands in the post punk underground. Second track 'less a roof, more a ceiling' is pretty much recorded live and more invigorating than anything a band with a producer and a budget could come with. Smells like revolution here'

Paper Cut Out, then. An unknown package from Newcastle, England. Having only released two songs thus far on 7” via Jealous Records, this is a relatively new band which has burst onto the post-punk scene of late, forming from the ashes of Skip Day Toner. First song is a short sharp burst of spazzy, jazzy, off-kilter post-punk - immediately afterwards the crowd turn and look at each other as if to say “whoa..what was that?!”.

It’s obviously something special. To say this band have stage presence would be doing them an injustice, these guys have venue presence. Constantly moving and intensely passionate. They’re rocking out and they’re loving it. So are we. I can’t think of a valid comparison for their sound: a little Sweep The Leg Johnny, a little Fugazi, a little Gang Of Four. Fast, tight, innovative. Astounding. If only it’d lasted longer. Clocking off after around 25 minutes, this is still one of the most enjoyable sets I’ve EVER seen.

Belfast three piece Lafaro bust onto the stage in ferocious form. Sounding a bit like McLusky strung out on Shellac and The Jesus Lizard, they have many riffs and a huge presence. A set coming down with new songs, occasionally punctuated by older tunes like Climate or the fantastic set-closer Scott, go down well.

The standard of musicianship is second to none, and its pretty easy to get lost in the virtuosity at times, but the aural assault makes it all feel wholly genuine. And were all loving that drummer.

local support comes from

Masamune played their last show on the 20th August 2005 at Gavfest 2 : Party Monster. A band who went through members in an almost Spinal Tap fashion. The only two original members who were in it from the start, Gavin Will and Alastair Chivers, were in it to the end when the band were forced to change their name after being threatened with a lawsuit.

Sirdancelot... has emerged from the ashes with yet another reshuffle. Now a three piece which sees Gavin moving from guitar to drums and the introduction of a new bass player going by the name of Stuart Maxwell. The tender trio aim to recapture the spirit of the mune in it's prime, slow it down, kick it to shreds, and glue it together with slint and cat on form-esque ramblings and shamblings.

Paper Cut Outs first Jealous Records output is little more than a nugget of art rock discordance a two track seven inch of which only 500 copies will be pressed but a quite absorbing one nevertheless. Hailing from the same district as fellow Jealous outfit This Aint Vegas a little way up the coast in Newcastle to be precise Paper Cut Out draw upon many of the same influences as their tour partners and label mates: Fugazi, Faraquet and Q and not U. But whereas TAV are all buffy, poppy-sounding choruses, Paper Cut Out are an altogether rougher diamond specialising in ramshackle, jarring soundscapes, impassioned vocals and unpredictable rhythm changes.

Of the two tracks here, Rats! boasts a beguiling, bass led melody and stabs of off-kilter guitar while Less a Roof, More a Ceiling showcases an altogether more anthemic side, lurching unexpectedly into a rewarding punch line late on. With all the certainty one can muster on the evidence of just a couple of songs, it all sounds rather promising. Paper Cut Out may not be as easy to listen to nor as addictive a vice as their North-East buddies, but become more gratifying with repeated listens, and I await something a little more ample with considerable interest.

Very nice grooves and I like the fuzzy guitar sound' date=' just a pity the vocals are the very overused and expected shout/non- singing type.[/quote']

add me to msn and ill send you their best stuff, if you think this has groove wait till you hear the other stuff :D

"stifled fumes of panic hang awkward with the words 'it could have been you this time, fuck him' between the twisted torso and deadpan brick face. the air is thick with curses, and unkown reactions of fuel and battery acid and not knowing what to do. gasping like the man staring out his screen shattered like nerves. it's too late to concentratconcentrate when twenty people are watching you die, like back seat drivers out of the corner of a nervous eye. phone operators read calm from a computer screen. traffic lights keep changing desperate to regain their mechanised control"

thats a pretty good roster on jealous records, i particularly like the half bass/ half guitar two piece band. i got all carried away there and even turned off the pop up blocker to join the mailing list.
