RANT: Flyering and Gig Posters

/BEGIN RANT

A little birdy tells me that The Moorings is now the only place that allows other venues and their promoters to put up posters for events held elsewhere. And the only place that permits the flyering of external events. Now that's just childish! Come on - gig posters are an attractive part of the decor. They were the only things holding CBGBs up LOL!

And despite out policy of openess there are still lots of gigs and clubnights that we don't get posters for, and have to inform our regulars by word of mouth.

So HANDS UP all those that would like to see a little more cooperation as opposed to competition.

Else we may choose to put up a special poster saying something along the lines of:

"HALLS OF SHAME

---------------------

XXXXXXXXX

XXX XXXXXXX

XXXXXXX

XXX

XXX XXXXXXXX

XXX XXXX XXXX

XXX XXXXX XXXX

DEMAND that these venues

permit open advertisement

of external events!"

But with the venue names in place of the XXXs.

So lets please have a little more in the way of community spirit. I thought we were supposed to be helping to build a local music scene not squabbling over the last pickings on it's carcass.

Appologies for any factually incorrect information on this post. Anywhere wants to help RECTIFY this situation then you know what to do... just post here after you've seen the light.

THANK YOU!

all a venue or promoter has to do is submit their events and they'll appear on the calendar. if they don't appear it's purely because they haven't been submitted. which is a shame.

Are you sure? I tried for weeks to get Quik's first gig of 2005 on A calendar and it didn't happen....

In that case I'll take it that Drummonds is off the hook.

Please could someone confirm on the situation with The Tunnels.

If there's 3 of us doing it then that's much better than I'd been led to believe.

For what it's worth we have had posters up for gigs and the odd clubnight at:

The Lemon Tree

Drummonds

Moshulu

Kef

The Tunnels

Snafu

The Blue Lamp

Captain Toms

And various out of town places.

The only thing we'd draw the line would be one of those A3 B&W venue issued posters that advertise all their forthcoming gigs on one sheet. The reason being that it's not particularily interesting to look at, and we'd be loathe to devote our precious wall space to a dose of those. But anything with interesting artwork, and particulrily coloured, humerous posters are OK. We do also have a rule that the posters can ONLY go on the wooden walls, and must be stuck with blue tack or similar. No staple guns, chewing gum, cellotape, saliva, shit, spunk etc. AND NOT on the paintwork, and NOT in the toilets (Kenny).

I've taken down posters when they were placed on our entrance doors, it is only polite to advertise inside the building!!!

To any place that does not permit posters or flyers from other venues... what next? Taking a marker pen and putting a line through every one else's gigs in each of your copies of the GCG? LMAO!

IMO everywhere would be busier if things were more widely advertised. There are lots of people out there that only frequent one or two places, only go out on certain nights, and never look at the on-line calendars. If they saw a poster for a gig that they wanted to see, being hosted somewhere they don't normally visit, on a night they don't normally socialise... well they might just go to it!

For clubnight posters we tend to only allow the irregular or very niche ones like Fettish Night, Carnage, or Elizium for example. But we do allow any flyers regardless of the mess they make, and preferrably flyers that offer our customers a reduced admission.

Kef regularily flyers us and puts up posters. Does Kef permit other places to put posters and flyer there?

Was that the Moshulu gig in April you PM'd me about? If so then it wasn't added because it was up to Moshulu to add their own gigs to the Moshulu calendar, as was stated in the message at the top of the gigs board at the time.

I've never seen any flyers/posters in there for anywhere else but themselves. That might be partially down to the fact that it's not open during the day so people can't pop in and put up posters - but I couldn't tell you if you actually are allowed to stick up posters for other gigs in there.

  • 3 weeks later...

Since posting this we have seen various posters appear from The Tunnels, The Lemon Tree, and Moshulu. Therefore we will assume that it is OK for promoters to exhibit posters for Moorings gigs at those places :)

There is a clubnight poster for Vice at Moshulu on a Monday that we are prepared to tolerate because we have punters that come to us on route to vice, so advertising this helps us too, and gives people a reason to go out drinking on Mondays.

The Lemon Tree submitted two posters. One of those was a B&W multi-listing advertising all their gigs for a month, which is aesthetically displeasing, and contrary to our policy. We're considering taking this down. On a postive note, all the gigs listed are expensive and of minority interest. The negative side being that the gigs all start too early for people to go drinking elsewhere beforehand. Our (indirect) dealings with the Lemon Tree to date have revolved around them screwing us with RETROSPECTIVE gig blocks on 4 occasions. So are we due them any favours? - Yeah right! We are fine with the poster for the Motorhead and Metallica tribute bands to remain (it is colourful and contains artwork), even though this conflicts with one of our own gigs. I'm sure that many of our regular customers would like to attend this.

In future would all chancing bastards please refrain from sticking up multi-gig type advertisements. They don't add anything of interest to our decor.
