Random Number (Rock Action/Catmobile/Rocket Racer/Irritant/Vacuous Pop/Highpoint Lowlife)

Based in Leeds, UK, Random Number is the name which Matt Robson goes under when he creates what has been described as Northern Wrongbeat', a mesh of emotive, brooding harmonies drawn and quartered by complex, beat-heavy rhythms. It's digital music with a human heart at its centre. Matt has cut his teeth in the past playing in bands like schizo-punks COPING SAW, and, most notably, Leeds' own pioneers of melancholy, HOOD. Throughout his time in all these bands, his Random Number alter-ego has taken shape. It's infancy as a vehicle for abstract noise-letting was premiered at shows where audiences were subjected to a torrent of sonic intensity. They were dirty, evil shows that hardened Random Number's countenance and tested the music's extremes. In it's adolescence it graduated to the beat-frenzy, power-tooled monster that recorded the infamous 'New Global Vulgar' CD on Leeds' premier experimental electronics label Fencing Flatworm. Although still as fierce as before, different shades and textures were beginning to form. This route was obviously one that Matt wanted to pursue, as by the time his 'The Fact That I Did' EP was released early in 2002, scoring itself the "Dance Music Single Of The Week" in the NME, his music had evolved into a much more controlled, economical beast. Still retaining plenty of the early energy, the EP, released on Mogwai's own Rock Action imprint, featured an emotional depth that before hadn't manifested itself so strongly. Releases on Irritant, Rocket Racer, Catmobile and Vacuous Pop have since followed. Matt has been touring the Random Number project extensively over the past six years, taking his twin laptop assault to Europe and the US on a number of occasions. He has done shows with likes of Kid 606, Cex, DJ Rupture and Hrvatski and ex Boards Of Canada synth-mangler, Christ, is a big fan. Matts next release will be his fourth album, entitled Golden Acre Sleeps released through HighpointLowlife Records. The new album builds further on the trademark random sound of propulsive PhD level rhythm programming, clinical buzzsaw basses and melancholic epic melodies. It is perhaps his most accessible release since the acclaimed The Fact That I Did record, with its reinforced concrete basslines, skippy beats and rustic melodies showing that even randomnumber has one eye on the dancefloor!

Quip

Quip is the alter ego of Ben Eyes, a software addict from Leeds. His interest in electronic music was sparked by a neighbour who, at the age of 10, played him Kraftwerk and told him his bedroom would look like Jean Michelle's studio when he grew up. Although this dream is yet to be realised Quip has found his niche in the moody, dark beats and gentle melodies that his guitars, found sounds and modular software yield. Having spurned recorded output for relentless gigging in squatted warehouses, forests and art galleries he is finally due to realease a split 10 with his peer Hands and Fingers. 2005 has also seen him release on the respected Hippocamp net label (www.hippocamp.net <http://www.hippocamp.net/> ) and play various festivals including the STFU collective electronica festival in Manchester and The Masterpiece Festival in the Yorkshire Dales.

Hands and Fingers

Hands & Fingers is the half man/half robot boy known as Stephen Hitchen. He mixes Organic samples, acoustic guitars, Glockenspiel and ambient atmospheres into Big Rock drum Breaks that has been described as Tortoise having a fight with Four tet in the dark,

with John Bonham trying to split them up! With a history of playing in Hardcore and Post-rock bands through the nineties, Hands & Fingers started as a side project in his bedroom with a cheap computer and an even cheaper acoustic guitar. The live debut came when he was asked to open and apply a soundtrack to an independent art exhibition in Leeds back in 2004. Since then he has played many gigs with artists as diverse as Jeffrey Lewis and Why? whilst continuing to adapt and improve his live set. With a 4 track CDR only release in 2004, Hands & Fingers will soon team up with friend and drinking buddy Quip to release a split 10 record. Which will be followed by an extensive tour of the UK with Quip and Random Number
