"...the unwanted son of Nick Cave and Johnny Cash."

is this music? (4/5 stars)

Fraser Stewart is yet another addition to the ever-increasing talent hailing from Dundee under the musical persona of Uncle Fritz. Over the last few years he has become an established and accomplished solo artist through his live performances while his delicate, melancholy, acoustic orientated music has provoked positive comparisons to the likes of Elliot Smith, Nick Drake, Aereogramme (acoustic) and The Red House Painters.

A debut album, "Nine Songs", was released in Feb 2005 through the Dundee based indie label Pet Piranha Records and recieved 4 out of 5 in a recent issue of Is This Music? Currently he is drawing up plans to record and release a follow-up album.

"I cannot fail to be impressed by the ability of Uncle Fritz. The deep and moody vocals will no doubt put some people off but overall the album has a lot to offer ... creative songwriting ... I liked this album a lot."

Mark McKenna, Rise-and-shine.com

In the live arena his singing and guitar playing have seen loud, rowdy audiences reduced to silence, and on occasion have brought individual audience members to tears! Fraser has become an extremely talented solo writer, producing songs that have absolutely no need for back-up musical instrumentation and can stand perfectly on their own.

His live performances to date have included an acoustic showcase at Aberdeen's GoNorth! Festial and recently playing alongside U.S anti-folk artists such as Viking Moses and Jana Hunter, and victory rock heroes, Laeto.

Having never been much of a conformist, the nature of Uncle Fritzs music is quite often confrontational and vitriolic, especially within his lyrics but when set against the sweet melodies and relaxed tones of his guitar playing and singing it creates an air of complete reflection for the listener. Songs such as Insect and Baby Blue demonstrate this and in turn has made individuals describe the music as being lost in a daydream.

Support for the fine Uncle Fritz will come from:

Talk Book http://www.myspace.com/talkbook

Talkbook is the gritty lo-fi solo project of Copy Haho singer Joe Hearty.

"Named after a dictaphone that was used to record/create/recreate samples and drum loops in the early days; TB is a living portrait of the artist as a young man. Having grown out of the small coastal town which kept him in its grip for oh so many years, TB now finds himself locked into the daily grind of the city. However, as luck would have it, he has now found himself in possession of various musical instruments, and in addition to this, an opportunity to indulge in the practice of said musical instruments in front of fine paying customers. That opportunity is this show, and those fine paying customers should be you." (TB). In other words: "Blip - Buzz -Twang - Screech - Pow!"

Euan Barr & Dave Donaldson

Now an Aberdeen resident, Euan was formerly singer/guitarist with Glasgow power trio 'Manganese' from the Mint Records stable, who released the 'Headcase' EP in 1999 and the album 'Lo Fi Fo Fum' in 2002. Dave, a Young-esque 12-string strumming, harmonica blowing troubadour, was previously the guitarist with Aberdeen janglers 'Sons of the Stage' who released the 'Let It Go' and 'Sketches' EP's in 2001.

They have joined together their singing, songwriting and guitar-playing talents and currently in the throws of putting together a new band - very tentatively entitled 'Billy Gibbons Freight Ltd'. In the meantime, they have begun airing some of their material acoustically. With two harmony vocals, two inter-weaving guitars and between them influences from Big Star/The Band to heavy rock - they be very good!
