Don't get me wrong' date=' I like Pink Floyd, but it seems a bit of an extravagence to compile a top 100 prog albums list, I mean, its a fairly limited genre it seems (despite the name of the genre!). Something along the lines of a top ten would probably have been a little more representative, rather than seemingly listing every prog album released.

EDIT: Of course it doesn't really matter as its just a list and people can make lists however long they choose. Also, I used the word "seem" and its different forms (seems, seemingly) far too much. Sorry.[/quote']

There are thousands of albums that could have appeared in that list!

I'm with Ravensby on this' date=' the genre appears anything but "progressive".[/quote']

It was to begin with, but it accumulated lots of cliches just like any other genre, a lot of which a band you like use on their albums.

Well as per usual Pallas prove much more popular outside the uk....

The results from the Dutch Progressive Rock poll http://www.dprp.net/dprpoll/2005/index.php

Oh' date=' and they are off to play Rosfest in a couple of weeks...[/quote']

The DPRP is a great site :) a lot of inetresting stuff on it, it's well recommended for anyone with a passing interest in all things prog from any era. It's also surprisingly one of the biggest websites in Holland apparently.

Cheers

I like Opeth' date=' but there is no way that Ghost Reveries should be higher than Lateralus. Part of the whole thing with Prog is making an atmosphere and the production and artwork has a lot to do with that. Opeth just doesn't compare.[/quote']

I'd say Ghost Reveries is one of the MOST atmospheric albums I've ever heard, I don't see where you can fail the production and the artwork doesn't need to be anything more than it is, it sets the tone brilliantly. What makes a good Prog band for me is one that can make an epic lengthed song interesting from start to finish and not slip into background music territory. I really like Tool, but I dont find them consistantly brilliant throughout any of their albums.

ditto.

mike has the greatest voice ive ever heard and it always actually adds to the atmosphere. his growl sounds icy cold (april etheral is a great example) whilst his clean vocals sound soft and warm, it really can change the whole feeling of the songs. but i think blackwater park and still life shit over ghost reveries (but still a great album)
