Afro Droid
I highly recommend this documentary about Rodney Bingenheimer, essentially the US equivalent of John Peel (with more celeb parties and less broacasting). It's interesting, funny and tragic. He was the first DJ in the States to play Bowie, The Ramones. Blondie, No Doubt, Nirvana, The Beach Boys and a host of others. He's a geniune music lover in the same Peel mould. He's also led a pretty tragic life - his mother abandoned him at a young age and his father barely acknowledges his existence. It seems like he's been taken advantage of thousands of times. I have a bigger flat than him, but his is wall to wall and floor to ceiling with gold discs, and, amazingly, Elvis' driver's license hangs on the wall too. He still DJs on KROQ (again like Peel, on a Sunday from midnight til 3am).Oot this week on Tartan DVD, we have it in Global to rent too.
