Computer Question: Start Up Programs?

Tav

Recommended Posts

I was was wondering if anyone could tell me if there is a way of deciding what programs load on start up. As soon as I open task manager there are a few programs running that I don't think need to be and I would like these to stop. Basically just trying to think of ways to improve performance a little.

Cheers.

Hmm have you tried using MSCONFIG?

Start' date=' Run: TYPE : MSCONFIG and go to start-up

And Remove unwated programs to start with

Thats the frist stage at least.

If that helps let me know[/quote']

Not the first stage!

First stage is to remove unwanted programs from your startup folder.

open regedit and check the following entries for keys; each key in the following is a program that will startup when the computer switches on:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/RunServices

and

HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run

HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/RunServices

not sure if i got the names quite right, but that's roughly where most of the startup stuff actually exists (e.g. where MSN messenger ends up being started from)
