Ally Kerr

Melodious, heartfelt, beautiful, sad and quirky are adjectives that could be easily blurted out when listening to Calling Out To You, the gorgeous debut album from Glasgows Ally Kerr. The album will be released on Neon Tetra Records <http://www.neontetrarecords.co.uk/> on June 13th 2005. Although echoes of Belle & Sebastian, Teenage Fanclub, Nick Drake and many other artists' resonate, Ally's style is singularly distinctive. The Scotland on Sunday <http://www.allykerr.com/features/index_features.html> newspaper recently recognised Ally as one of the most interesting and creative musicians working in the country right now in its rundown of the hottest new Scottish talent. Allys album follows the critical success of his limited edition debut EP Midst of the Storm, released on 7-inch white vinyl by cult Spanish label Elefant Records <http://www.elefant.com/> (Lambchop, Ladybug Transistor, Camera Obscura) which garnered airplay around the world (including being nominated as single of the year on a popular German radio show). BBC Radio 1s John Peel was one such DJ who championed Kerr on his shows. Fittingly, the legendary venue King Tuts in Glasgow was to be home to his first ever live performance. Production on Calling Out To You came principally from David Scott - the creative force behind The Pearlfishers, Duglas T. Stewart (of respected Glasgow popsters BMX Bandits), and Duncan Cameron (best known for his work with The Delgados, Teenage Fanclub, Arab Strap). Much of the album was written on planes, trains and automobiles as Ally travelled between the East Coast of the USA and the West Coast of Scotland. Ally is currently one of the fastest-rising songwriters in Scotland and Calling Out To You is surely destined for big things in Europe. Ally Kerr has just confirmed live headline shows this July in Japan where Calling Out To You was released last year on Quince Records <http://www.quince-records.com/> to widespread acclaim and glowing reviews. Calling Out To You has also just been included in a top Japanese music magazines top 20 albums ever to come out of Scotland http://www.allykerr.com/features/index_features.html> sitting alongside Franz Ferdinand and Belle and Sebastian. At the time of writing Ally has just been selected to play at this years North by North-East music festival in June Canadas biggest and most important music festival that rivals South by South-West in Austin, Texas.

Sal

Sitting in the shadows of the stage rests two of Aberdeen's most talented musicians. As the haunting vocals lift out of the stage and intertwine with heart-achingly perfect guitar chords you know you're in the presence of something special. That something is Sal.

Sal are an unsigned acoustic duo based in Aberdeen, Scotland. Consisting of Magnus Robertson on vocals, and Paul Tasker on guitar and backing vocals. They formed in November 2001 and frenetically established a reputation as an exciting and versatile live act. So far the band's music has taken Magnus and Paul across Scotland with gigs across Aberdeen, including a headline gig at the Lemon Tree, as well as higher profile gigs in the likes of Cabaret Voltaire in Edinburgh and the Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow In May 2002 they were asked to take part in the Tennants T-Break event at Lava in Aberdeen. Their performance that night was described as "beautiful songs played expertly on the acoustic guitar" by www.redt.co.uk. A month later and the guys broke onto the radio with a live radio session on the Del Franklin show on Northsound 1. Two of their songs from their EP were played across the North East. These were "Sunshine Morning Smile" and "Missing in Action". Another of their tracks, "Last Miles", is featured on a Radio Scotland website called Celtic Roots. In January of this year Sal performed at a series of high profile showcases in Glasgow, including a performance on the Danny Kyle stage as part of the "Celtic Connections" festival, which earned them a special commendation. They then appeared as finalists in the Daily Record 192 Big Break song writing competition. Sal's material combines all the elements of contemporary song writing with both the power of the delta blues and beauty of Celtic folk. The power and beauty of hearing Sal is in the comparisons that can be drawn from a wide range of established acts yet still with the ability and imagination to retain their own sense of purpose. The media have taken these boys to their hearts: "Beautifully chilled out songs with depth and feeling" Aberdeen Evening Express "Excellently played, sung and arranged with a very classic feel" Session in Scotland DJ, Vic Galloway. With pitch perfect music from Paul and the soulful harmonies from Magnus Sal are reminiscent

of a contemporary John Martyn times two. Sal have recentlty released their debut album

on their own label.

Saint Jude's Infirmary

Risen from the ashes of an under-fourteen football team. Saint Judes Infirmary were formed in Kirkcaldy, Fife in the mid-nineties based around the song-writing of twins Ashley and Grant Campbell and the velvet voice of their cousin Emma-Jane. Early reviews compared their embryonic sound to a first untrammelled howls of the Velvet Undergound mixed with a primal sixties girl-group beat - a comparison that neither time nor wisdom has shaken. The band moved to Edinburgh sharing stages with local luminaries such as Ballboy and NME favourites Khaya before releasing their debut single 'Home-made Christmas card on the Paris France label. This dark, acerbic repose to the traditional Christmas single was described as "Truly spine-tingling dream pop" and "Star-crossed mix of Blondie and Leonard Cohen!" by the scottish music press and went into a second pressing after regular exposure on BBC Radio Scotland. Various drummer departures and the brief emigration of Ashley to rebel country capital Austin, Texas, led to the band splitting. This move did however inspire Ashley and Grant to re-emerge in Amsterdam, Holland, with the critically acclaimed loud country shock troops of Sacred Heart Losers. Variously described as "Funeral Troubadours" and "Louvin Brothers Breeding with the Jesus and mary Chain, an immaculate concept" playing support slots to the likes of The Handsome Family and Lift To Experience. However, earlier this year, the band heard the call again and returned, like weary Samurai massed ranks, to once more lay assault to the stale laddish inertia of the Scottish music scene. Recruiting ex-Sacred Heart Losers, Mark Francis on drums and Andrew Dempster on keyboard, the band have blazed a trail through Edinburgh's live music scene and recorded a set of new songs matching their poetic poise to a new fuzzy and melodic post punk sound-scape. These new songs are a continuation of the sound and vision that the band have sheltered since children and with them the band have been described as "Possibly the band that are turning me on the most just now" and "Simply stunning, the band to watch for this yeart" by Beat 106 DJ Jim Gellatly. This growing momentum has culminated in Saint Judes Infirmary recently being hailed as "A gorgeously lethargic wisp of Velvet Underground?Mazzy Star Melancholy, these Edinburgh dreamers are what rainy days rain for. Fronted by a sweetly cooing Debbie Harry lookalike, theyve only been together for a few months but their talent rivals that of bands with careers a dozen times as long" in Paul Whitelaw's Scotland On Sunday front page expose on the top twenty bands in Scotland.
