How good (or bad) was Triptych???

well actually the triptych line-up covered a very wide & catholic musical remit' date=' you need to back this up with a list of would like to see bands.[/quote']

I have to agree with Chilli for once... Triptych is a festival that includes a wide variety of genres and is neither avant garde or mainstream. So it's stuck in the middle between T in the Park (mainstreamish indie and dance for the masses) and Kill you timid notion, Subcurrent et al (pretty left field / chin strokery for the few). Triptych are great at getting people to reform old bands especially for the festival, and getting label showcases up to Scotland. The downside to Triptych is that it has to make a profit so the prices are higher than most of us would like. Additionally too much stuff on at the same time, not everything comes to Adeen for economic or other reasons.

Suggesting bands you would like to play Adeen is a fine idea. However forecasting the number of punters that will attend is a very inexact science.

you are half right

couldnt imagine half of those artists playing aberdeen if it wasnt for triptych.

to a degree thats true, but there a few promoters putting on interesting & eclectic music.

these independent promoters don't have a marketing budget, just word of mouth & goodwill from their loyal regulars. These promoters usually are putting on stuff they want to see themselves. What is great is the artists they are putting on REALLY enjoy coming to Aberdeen & in many cases much thety are having a much better time here than say glas/edin.

hmm... you obviously don't look past Kef when you're looking for a gig to go to then.

i do look at Kef and subsequently thats the venue i would be least likely to go to

closely followed by......*

given that theres only 4 or 5 venues in the town and 3 of them specialise in dull outdated shite or safe middle of the road bollocks that other towns got past at least five years ago I think I have a point

if no one else on within the tiny wee world of this message bored thinks the same then Im not surprised at all

* - omitted because promoters have feelings too and Im not about to start slagging of individuals, just like Im not mentioning the clever promoters with the balls to move things forward

You don't actually HAVE to' date=' but go on, just for fun. Presumably you'd like to see different people to the ones you've just seen at Triptych.[/quote']

If I had time to work out a list of potentially good interesting bands to put on in the deen not including the very good triptych line up, I would be doing a promoters joib, and seeing as I dont have time and I wouldnt get paid for it I cant be arsed

i put the question back > apart from the odd very infrequent indepentant promotion (mostly at the tunnels), why for every decent gig is there 10 shit ones? *checks aberdeen gig listing* yup thought so

i travel south (england/glasgow) a lot and towns much smaller than aberdeen have a much better quality and diversity of gig scene - I know the promoters up here blame the A1 and logistics and they have a point, but surely the A1 and logistics still applies to the cover bands and generally rubbish bands they regularly drag up here?

then again, supply and demand....you want rubbish, you get it

i dont actually dont give a toss (cos i see lotsa gigs outa town), was just making the point that Triptych simply underlines what we are generally missing round here

totally agree

its those promoters that we need more of and less 'play it safe - lowest common denominator' promoters

the scene might be stupid but the public isnt and thats why theres no interest in whats going on outwith events like triptych where the organisers have some knowledge and the bollocks to be diverse (fair enough they have sponsorship too, butr they use it well)

so we are talking the same language, so look out for elizium nights, drakes promotions, paranoid promotions & interesting music promotions they/we are all committed to bringing artists to Aberdeen that wouldn't normally come here. Yes a lot of their nights

"won't be your thing", but at least they/we are bringing diversity to see if there is an audience with an open mind in NE Scotland.

already know about three of those four and count em as ones who can move things in the right direction and i lookout for their events...cheers anyhoo!

its ironic that theres promoters in town with waaaaay more backing doing far less for new quality music than those guys

diversity is my thing & theres not much i dont like if its done good (unless it involves those long haired types with tight pants and beards or the ASDA chart)

ah betanazi

ive yet to see you at any of these ecletic shows that you seek, there is a fair amount of good stuff going on, but when you generally classify shows under the aforementioned titles you are just as guilty of prejudice as the rest of the moron contingent that fills aberdeen. why dont you give some of these "custmetal, pseudo whatever" bands a chance?? you might find that you like some of it.

nopt a rant, i am sick of ranting, but you just seem to be judgng a book by its cover

I agree Mr Maxwell - pick gigs by promoter instead of bands and you may end up pleasantly surprised.

Ive tried watching shit I dont like* trying to convince myself to like it but I dont like it and would rather watch a decent band or better still go to a club for some proper music

*consistenly seems to be any music with the any of the following words ''core'' ''grind'' ''metal'' ''motherfucking rock'' in its advertising bollocks

I totally like everything else so just eliminating a few backward satan bumming hippies with widdly guitars is hardly small minded

Agree with Dave that picking a gig by promoter is the way and adds a cool randomness

ahhhh the list where I suddenly become a gig promoter, the work that Ive already said simply havent got the time or inclination to do....the list I never said I would do...that list....it would take at least a couple of hours

but there is a shitload of really good (or at least interesting) national bands/acts who play small to medium sized venues and never come to aberdeen but seem to regularly appear in most other provincial smalltown backwaters ....thats the fecking list!

if anyones missing the point btw, for a town this size we have a load of venues and a load of gigs (which is good) ....all im saying is if the quality and diversity (this is in the hands of the promoters yus?) was to go up then it would be cool, as opposed to the same type of outdated shit generally proliferating

All i'm asking you to do is list three artists, not stick your hand in your pocket to pay for these three artists like a real promoter would. Of course maybe you are scared of

being laughed at with your wee list, maybe your statement about "loads of bands & loads

of people I know would go & see" doesn't stand up to public scrutiny. What have you got to loose? you never know maybe a promoter will do something about it.?

only 3 bands min, dinnae be a drama queen. i am interested to hear these life changing bands/acts that are superior to the current crop of stuff that comes to abdn.

you live here, you whinge about the scene. i dont see you doing anything at all to change that? surely your life would be a better place if you could lend a hand to get acts that you rate higly to abdn?

you are in a band for fun, not for money, you put a load of work in and get fuck all back moneywise. local music is not about money, all it needs is a bit more effort from EVERYBODY to improve things.

i feel for the promoters who continously lose money bringing top notch international acts to abdn trying to keep gits like you in the loop

I trust the Interesting Music guys, all of the shows I've attended have been, in one way or another, GREAT. Not always suited to my current tastes, but isn't that one of the reasons for going to gigs, to be exposed to music you might otherwise not hear?

I find their gigs to be a combination of the following: Enlightening - Educational - Entertaining.

I get the impression that young Steve is jaded from one too many Malt Mill indie and bland rock/metal type bands.

i think youll find your idea of the lazy promoters who promote safe backward shit and the promoters that at try to put on new diverse good stuff is the same as mine

so i dont know what your (or chillis point is) apart from scoring scene points *yawn*

So as a punter - am I not allowed to ever say if I want more better and diverse stuff to be put on in the deen? ...without being strung up for asking?

fucking scenester mafia - the whole point I made at the start was about how can the general public (not just an up our own asses scenester minority) be persuaded to come back out to gigs en mass (like they do for Triptych)......apologies to anyone who dosent get it......I should know better than pose any question of any fucking kind. Insular.

Spunkburger Super Size please.
