Web hosting packages?

Doc Ascension

Recommended Posts

Already mateys,

Can anyone out there recommend a good web host? I'm looking for Free Domain Name, with email addresses and a fair amount of Space for less than 40 a year probably.

The best deal I've found is Streamline's Power User package:

http://www.streamlinenet.co.uk/wh.php

Anyone had experience with them/know of any one better?

Cheers Dudes

Depends on what you are after. If you are something cheap and cheerful then stick with the big guns as they are always cheaper and usually more reliable than the smaller web hosts. Two that come to mind are Lycos (http://webhosting.lycos.co.uk/consumer/) and 1&1 (http://www.1and1.co.uk).

If you are after something specific (e.g. need to run PHP scripts, want MySQL support etc) then I offer a few packages over here: http://www.existentia.co.uk

I'm not cheap though and don't pretend to be. I offer quality rather than quantity. :)

Don't need anything fancy really, ie no php or even cgi at the moment.

Just need somewhere with a fair amount of storage space, like the one I listed would be fine! Free Domain also helps... a must is no adverts though which rules out all the free ones...

I'm temporarily hosted, website is almost ready to be unleashed so stay tuned!

Oh and thanks for the input Neil!

i dont understand all the jargon..cgi, PHP scripts, MySQL ...what does it all mean????

I'm actualy in the process of designing my friends photography site, any ideas what kinda web hosting package i would need?? i would need alot of space cos eventually there will heaps of jpegs on there.

It doesn't have to be cheap either cos it is for a business.

cheers

Sorry neil but I find your prices WAY to high!

www.web-mania.com hosts your site for bout 15 a year and your domain name will be bout 10.It has all you'll need.

You'd prolly be cheaper to get storage somewhere like that and get your domain name cheaper. My domain name costs something silly like 2 a year (www.kazzles.co.uk - so decent names available)' date=' and I get free storage with my ISP (pipex) which is actually surprisingly reliable.

[url']http://order.1and1.co.uk/ - where i get my domain name from (I think)

Actually, it looks like they have some good storage packages too :)

Don't worry about all that stuff, see the web address of this post at the top ^^^ notice it has .php?do=newreply or whatever? It's basically a web programming language with large database integration so that you can create some very complicated things on the net, such as - a forum :)

Or paying for your shopping online... CGI is another form of scripting which you can use with javascript for example, to take details that someone has put into a form and store them. Its not as powerful as php though. MySQL is the database side of things.... I think that's pretty much covered it..

For making a basic website, you don't need any of this - just html/javascript or just something like Dreamweaver.

ditto... although I really can't be chuffed to be honest - too much fannying around so I use Dreamweaver now' date=' basically because I do alot of table layout so I really can't be arsed hand coding them all...[/quote']

I use dreamweaver now too, but I do still pretty much hand-code and just use the 'design' slide to view my work. Tis not as accurate as IE for doing it, but it's still not bad.

don't you mean Firefox!!! :O

You should always make sure your website works with FireFox/Netscape before you check Internet Explorer. This is because Firefox and Netscape confirm to the w3c standards almost to the letter , whereas Internet Explorer doesn't really!!

If it works in Firefox, it's almost guaranteed to work in IE too, however this doesn't hold true the other way round (As Black Atom's site will show you - it doesn't work in FireFox :|)

You should definately think about downloading FireFox and checking your websites with that first. Keep checking IE too, but like I said - if it works in FireFox, it'll most likely work in IE, never the other way around hehe :)

On another note, i've put my site up at a temporary host: http://ascensionband.bravehost.com/

Comments, etc most welcome :)
