  1. It was a former old people's home. There are some amenity cottages to the rear of the property, but a large number of measures to address concerns were agreed by Housing & Environment Committee.

It was intended to be used for 2 years so that a long term facility could be built on the former Victoria House site.

There were 129 objections, but no objections or observations from Grampian Police.

  2. I was informed at lunchtime today that the Licensing Committee voted by 9-6 to reject the HMO License application for Aberdon House to be used as a temporary unit for homeless people.

This means that the Council is now in a really precarious position when it comes to offering shelter for the homeless, and probably means some folk will be left out on the streets because there will be nowhere else for them to go.

I thought folk on here might be interested.

  3. Watched the first episode. Lots of over acting, cliche's and repeated use of the same dramatic shot (Luther with his hands in his pockets marching past the camera with a glower on his face). Didn't bother with the 2nd episode.

Stargate Universe is pretty good though the first half of the season was very slow to get going (like they didn't want to scare away any non Stargate fans tuning in for Robert Carlyle). Seems to be picking up now though and last week's episode had a great cliffhanger.

Spooks was brilliant for 3 years then they started turning over actor's at a ridiculous rate of knots and it all went a bit over the top.

    Glad I avoided it then!

I went off Spooks quite early. The "Lisa Faulkner/deep fat fryer' incident put me off, not from a squeamish perspective, just a 'FFS' perspective!

I look at The Wire, and think to myself that anyone over this side of the pond trying to do something similar would probably end up turning out something like Shameless...

  4. Agree with this.

Aside from the almost always excellent HBO most US networks follow the formula of commission 13 epsiodes then if there's still people watching commission another 10 as Season 1. They have a rough idea of the concept at the start of the season but they continue to write and shoot as it's screened so if the viewing figures drop you get sudden changes in character and plot direction to try and regain the lost figures. All that results in is a disjointed unholy mess of a show, with insane plot holes and character arks.

See Heroes, Flashforward and the daddy of them all, 24.

Compare those to The West Wing, The Sopranos, The Wire, True Blood, Deadwood etc. Smaller seasons and tighter plots that arc over the whole series and often across multiple years.

Some shows lend themselves to large seasons with standalone epsiodes like CSI or Stargate. They have room in the plot for filler episodes that don't advance the story, but big shows that are supposed to drive a network through the autumn and spring schedules need to keep high ratings and 20+ episodes with panicking writers desperately engineering twists and shock endings doesn't help anyone.

Agree. I enjoyed Heroes a lot, but the point where it jumped the shark for me was when they created the supposed alternative future, with Sylar exploding after his *son* got killed, and then did nothing to drive towards that supposed ending. Despite the premise being that they were all going to converge there.

I gave up on Lost after series 2, it was already pretentiously silly, but by all accounts it has just gotten worse.

The wife is a fan of Stargate Universe (with Bob Carlyle) and from what I have seen it seems not bad from an entertainment perspective.

I have also happened across The Good Wife, with Julianna Marguiles, while she's been watching it, and it seems to actually be a half decent drama as well.

I keep hoping we will get some half decent drama over here, Doctor Who is good knock about fun, I really enjoyed Life on Mars, but then they sullied it by refusing to say "job well done" and instead decided to milk it with the awful Ashes to Ashes.

I kept meaning to give Luther a try, but I am worried I may find it rubbish and may only be interested in it because it stars Stringer Bell...

  5. Sorry Tina :O

I see Heroes has been cancelled, as has Flashforward and, rather shockingly, Law and Order has been shelved after 20 years.

Yet at the same time, they commission another series of The (even less funny than the Gervais version) Office, a remake of the bloody Rockford Files (because there's been plenty campaigns for that) and JJ Abrams (surely the most over-rated producer of over-rated pish ever) is being commissioned to produce another new series which will probably consist of another long drawn out string of unanswered questions, absurd coincidences and general shiteness. Although I am starting to feel that way about Flashforward I hasten to add!

I think the problem in US TV is that nobody seems geared up to follow a genuine story arc from beginning to end, and most of the shows were probably never created with an actual "ending" in sight.

Anyone else going to miss any of these shows?

  6. Hi all

Me and my brother are running the Baker Hughes 10K to raise money for Alzheimer Scotland.

In order to raise as much money as possible for a charity that's very close to my heart, I'd be grateful for any donations folk might be willing to make.

Anyone who has met me will know that watching me run 10K is probably worth a couple of quid just for the amusement value.

No obligations, but I thought I'd post this up anyway.

My Just Giving site is: Mark McDonald is fundraising for Alzheimer Scotland - JustGiving

    Cheers

  7. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion (but not their own set of facts) which is derived from their limitation of understanding, level of accumulated knowledge, informed perspective, level of wisdom, capacity of reasoning, ability to distinguish truth from error, and so no. But I guess, one easy way is, you dont need to believe me or anyone else to be closer to the truth, but simply, by going and seeing by yourself.

are you the guy who writes the ditties on those tear-off calendars?

  8. I liked it better when this bit of the forum used to be called The Wasteland and it was all frothy stuff like 'what's your top five soups' or 'who would you invite to a dinner party'. Now you pop on here for a wee browse around when you're having a cup of tea and it's all soiled tampons and unplanned pregnancy.

You come on for a little bit of light relief and you're left reading about some fucking harrowing nightmare. It's like going to rent Toy Story from Blockbusters and getting in to find they've given you Angela's Ashes by mistake.

You brought a nostalgic tear to my eye there my friend, have some rep

    10. Tribute to Bobby

Acoustic solo artist Brockley Combe's debut album is a collection of distinctly melancholic tunes, beginning and ending with songs alluding to assassinated politicians, and sandwiching a song devoted to the sadness that lies inside an English Beauty Queen.

Not one to listen to if you've had a shit day at work.

  10. is eljos any good? i always been put off because it has been dead some weekends i went past but also because its only 2 minutes from my flat. And for some reason i seem to convince myself that a restaurant cannot be both convenient and tasty.

Besides, i wont be going back to la tasca again any time soon, and interested in trying somewhere different. What annoyed me about la tasca was that everything is so obviously frozen and shipped in to be cooked in either a microwave or a fryer.

Eljos is great. I think it suffers from not being as prominently located as La Tasca, and also the herd mentality that prefers the chain restaurant.

I have eaten at both and for me Eljos wins every time.

  11. Currently reading "Bad Science" by Ben Goldacre.

It has a very pleasing chapter attacking Gillian McKeith, but it generally helps expose just how dodgy some of the "scientific research" we read about actually is!

  12. I went to Frankie & Benny's in Union Square yesterday for their 2 courses for 9.99 lunch. Me and my friend shared sweet chilli wings and brushetta. The brushetta was good, however I would of describe it more as Garlic Bread with an onion and tomato relish, the topping was rather scarce. The Sweet Chilli chicken wings tasted more like BBQ, and were more like drumsticks....but wasn't complaining cause they were finer than I expected.

My main course was quite disappointing, I order New Yorker Pasta (chicken, chilli and pasta served in their Philly cheese sauce topped with crispy bacon), it was like a watered down macaroni made with penne pasta, what looked like shop bought chicken slices, lord knows where the chilli was. It was overall bland and boring even after adding a ton of parmesan and black pepper.... :(

Overall wasn't too impressed. Won't be hurrying back.

I have it on reasonable authority that the Frankie and Benny's in Union Square has been beset by problems and they had to bring in a manager from elsewhere to try and sort things out, a friend was dining there and received truly appalling service.

On top of this, I wouldn't touch Frankie & Benny's ordinarily, another of these soulless chain establishments which involve meals which are basically pre-packed uniformly bland microwaveable packages of soul sucking mediocrity while there are decent, well run independent establishments struggling to survive because folk are so easily seduced by a brand identity...
