  1. The wireless function on my laptop is being a bollock. My phone and my missus' laptop can receive our wireless fine, but mine won't pick up our homehub, or wi-fi elsewhere. Other than plugging straight in via an ethernet, is there another option, like a USB wireless receiver or something?

    This should do the trick:

  2. I'm looking into buying a bass guitar as my beloved rattly Westfield Jazz Bass has seen better days. Advice on a suitable replacement would be appreciated.

I'm looking for something sub-£300 (although this would be slightly flexible if something significantly better could be had) and a more classic look.

It's a predictable suggestion, but the Squier Vintage Modified Jazz basses would be a good shout if you're buying new.

  3. aye, i can believe it. But it's the price. And it's xmas, i don't want my other half giving me an envelope of money to go towards a gift she couldn't afford. We'd both rather she got me the gift.

If she loved you she'd get you the better one.

  4. Well if you get paid on both jobs you will probably will get taxed. If you are on a PAYE tax code which you almost certainly will be, earning over £130 or there abouts (it was £125 last year but the allowance went up so can't be bothered to recalculate it) then you have to pay tax and national insurance. if however your income reduces to under the limit then they start refunding the tax you paid. So while the £8000 allowance is there, if at some point your allowance goes over the rough montly total to reach that allowance then you do pay tax which can be given back to you later.

    Hope that makes sense!

I think so! So essentially I'll probably get taxed because I'm earning quite a bit in a short period of time, but I'm likely to receive this back come September when I go back to earning barely anything...right?

  5. You'll only get taxed once you earn over £8,105 in a year I think. After that you'll get taxed on both jobs.

Further reading indicates this could very well be the case! I'd got it into my head for some reason that there's a second job tax, but hopefully that's completely wrong.

  6. Someone help plz. I'm a student with a part time job but I just got a full time internship for the next 12 weeks. If I decide to ruin my summer and work 7 days a week in both jobs (urgh) do I automatically get taxed on the full time one as it's technically my 2nd job? Or do you get taxed on the job you earn less in? If anyone knows and can save me a tedious phone call to HMRC tomorrow I'll be thrilled.

  7. You'll be a fraction of the price.

I used to roll with one. It was good fun. Especially at Warehouse. I'll see about her getting me a cab though.

Okay, what head and cab should I get? :p

I have an Ashdown 8x10 that I can't currently justify owning. It's bloody massive. Don't suppose you'd be interested in buying it?

  8. Are there any courier companies that let you specify a collection slot?

I'm trying to arrange one between 9-12 Wednesday and it's proving to be an absolute nightmare. Royal Mail are charging about £15 more than other companies so they're a last resort really...

  9. You seem pretty knowledgable...

I'm looking at £200 for an HP Touchpad I think - might try and get it for less.

However, what do you reckon of £130 for the Nokia? Is it worth that or is it just all round shit!? It got a really good review in 2008... It seems to do all the things I was hoping it would do and does it well enough according to that (out of date) review!

I've never used the Nokia but from looking at the specs and seeing it online I don't think it's really worth your money. Technology moves pretty quickly. I'm sure in 2008 it would have got great reviews but that was 3 years ago. To put it into perspective, the iPad wasn't released until 2010, and that's when the tablet market really kicked off.

If you hunt about (which if it's a Christmas present you probably don't have much time for sadly) you should be able to get an HP Touchpad for £150. Try Gumtree perhaps? Alternatively a small netbook would probably be a more sensible option, although I'm unsure on how much you'd be looking at for one of those. I'd expect £200 would get you a decent enough one though But that would definitely be a practical option for web browsing.

  10. Ah well - I put a cheeky offer in for the Nokia one and was surprised it was accepted...

Got it for £130 - might put it back on ebay if it's shit!!

I put that offer in fully expecting it not to be accepted and then see what I could get it for - seems the review page I was looking at was out of date! I thought everything on there was fairly up to date (and all the other reviews were from 2011, but then the Nokia one slipped in from 2008!!). Fucksake.

What are everyone's views on HP Touchpads? (not you Adam, I know what you'll say....)

I had an HP Touchpad for a while. For £89 they were definitely a massive bargain, although I'm pretty sure you're looking more £150-200 for them now. Even for that money it's going to be a far better bet than the Nokia. Although not as responsive as an iPad and a little laggier they're good devices. Very limited in terms of apps but for a web browser it does the job. Nice interface too. I'd definitely go for one of those over the Nokia if £150 is your budget.
