  1. gotan project, phoenix, cat empire.... good calls!! although nobody seems to know phoenix in France. I keep getting blank faces when I talk to people about them.
  2. Noir Desir. louise Attaque Tryo Les Ogres de Barback Le Peuple de L'herbe Mass Hysteria All French, all huge over here.
  3. Trentemoller High Tone Neil Young Talking Heads NTM / IAM ... They are practically the same and equally as good IMO Kraftwerk DJ Krush Frank Zappa James Brown Aphex Twin ... when he's good, he's ridiculously good. In no order. That was a great way to waste time at work!
  4. From a completely visual/technical perspective, I know it is a very difficult task to film a relatively static subject in a confined space and edit it together in a way that keeps the viewer's attention. Hence, the over-use of ridiculous flash pans and fruity effects when bands do studio sessions on the likes of T4: anything to keep the attention. This video is very well put together in my opinion. the little dolly effect is a nice touch, there is a good variety of shots/angles, the pace of cutting suits the music and the lighting is nicely set up in the studio scene. The graphics are stylish also without being over the top. I'm guessing the cameras used were the average high end DV type. The downfall of using these cameras is that the immediate visual effect is cheap looking/home-made and you have to compensate for that in other areas such as editing, shot choice, etc. This is done perfectly in the studio part of the video but the interview part is a bit over saturated with light, making it a bit inconsistent and it brings down that level of professionalism. that's minor criticism though and i'm really glad to see something like this getting made in Aberdeen. It made me home sick! Music wise = bloody good too.
  5. I completely agree with you, even the Mitch Hedberg bit. maybe it is a generational thing but i think his style of political comedy has dated. To the point where, when i'm listening to him, I don't care what he thinks, I just want a good punch line. As for the film, I can't see it working. He hardly led the same kind of eventful life as his predecessor, Lenny Bruce. i.e pretending to be a priest to scam money from widows, becoming a transvestite in order to get disharged from the navy, etc. All Bill Hicks did was a bit of acid with his mates now and again. Was he even censored that much?

    slang jokes

A glaswegian walks into a bakery and asks 'Is that a cake or a meringue?' baker replies 'naw you're right, it's a cake'
  7. shhhiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiittttttttt the wire is brilliant. I'm gutted there's no more episodes planned. Since finishing the fifth series I've been getting my baltimore fix with these gems from the same writers. Amazon.com: The Corner (HBO Miniseries): T.K. Carter, Khandi Alexander, Sean Nelson, Clarke Peters, Larry Hull, Antonio D. Charity, Tyra Ferrell, Toy Connor, Tasha Smith, Glenn Plummer, Corey Parker Robinson, Neko Parham, Delon Browne, John Epps, Dua 'the corner' is a a bit more bleak than the wire and slightly over acted at times but just about every wire character pops up at some point in different guises. It definitely has its moments and is worth a watch. Amazon.com: Homicide Life on the Street - The Complete Seasons 1 & 2: Homicide-Life on the Street, n/a: Movies & TV remembered this being on when i was a kid around about bed time. It's basically the wire lite. its a cop soap opera set in early nineties baltimore. The characters and dialogue are endearing and funny and it beats any of that ncscisicsi bruckheimer bollocks any day. these are my suggestions for those who have finished the wire. there are also a few little wire prequels knocking about on yootoob which are pointless yet quite good with the exception of the prop joe one which is just a huge slice of fromage.
  8. that leto synth is really good, thanks for the tip.
  9. somebody tell steve to start making music again!
  10. Hello all MySpace.com - Punish Yourself - Industrial / Punk / Gothic - www.myspace.com/punishyourself I saw this band at the Dour festival in Belgium a couple of weeks ago. Had never heard of them before so didn't know what to expect. I have to say, they were really rather jolly good. none of the videos on youtube do them justice, the audio and video are really ropey. was just wondering if anyone else is into/has seen them? I'm probably just a sucker for luminous body paint gimmicks but they put on such a good show and i felt compelled to share. I'm a relative newcomer to industrial music (only recently started appreciating NIN due to the fact that kids who liked them at school also liked other, absolutely abysmal bands) and am no expert by any means but there seems to be quite a lot of good stuff at the moment particularly stuff that has that dirty industrial thing going on but still fits into my 'bangin choons min' category. any other suggestions?
  11. 'The tower of power, too sweet to be sour. Funky like a monkey... oh yeah.. Macho man diggit diggit.' pure poetry!
  12. gutting news. I hear it's gonna become a hotel of all things. This is the worst kef-related news since they got rid of that micro chips vending machine. That machine in itself is a good memory but stand out nights for me include; -Grandmaster Flash a good 3-4 yrs ago, (his set was surprisingly good but his pensioner mate in the shell suit dancing on stage like the bird in the D-light, 'groove is in the heart' video made the night). -The first time i saw Scratch Perverts when they were making basslines using their fingers on the stylus' (or is it styli?!?). admittedly I was probably about 17 and easily impressed but it was the first time i'd seen proper live technically minded djing (or am I allowed to say turntablism? is that the accepted word for wikkedy wikkedy scratchy scratchy?). Seen them a few times since then and they have gotten exponentially shitter and lazier, but that first time was a belter. - the precipeace jazz nights were always good. Gave you the brief feeling of aberdeen being quite cosmopolitan... untill you step outside and see a bare-footed school girl in hot pants spewing her ringer all over a macaroni pie. -all time greatest memory of kef was on a quiet week night. Good company, good atmosphere and Finnie was playing some of the best dub music I have ever heard. I love a good bit of dub but i hadn't heard any out in aberdeen untill then. Haven't heard any since either but Kef was the type of eclectic place where it was always a possibility. boo boo boo to kef closing.
  13. If you're going to france, i cannot recommend grenoble enough. I spent a year there and loved every minute. If you're interested in snow or mountain sports its one of the best places to be in the world. No more than two hours from all the good resorts. Prime location to go anywhere in europe too. A short train ride can get you to the cote d'azure, geneva, turin. Also, lyon, which has an amazing electronic music scene (high tone, ezekiel, duracell) is only an hour away. Workwise, there are loads of events round the area in winter like snowboard competitions and festivals, and they always need staff. The place really comes to life during the ski season.
  14. ladies and gentlemen.... I give you the hungarian Ian Brown.

    Your current read?

preach!! rum diary has totally been obscured by HST's cult status. It is relatively tame but I think it shows he was really talented as a travel writer.

    Ironman

finally, a superhero/comic book film that might actually be half decent. most of these films are only interesting when the boring everyman eventually puts on his stupid costume and starts jumping off stuff. whereas, downey jr is always good to watch. the back story bit at the beginning, before the action starts, will probably be the best part.
  17. don't kow if anyone has mentioned before but Demetri Martin is a brilliant comedian. Maybe not to everyone's taste, but definitely worth a look. he did a paramount comedy special which is on tv-links and has a few videos on youtube. also, flight of the conchords is the best tv comedy since arrested development, and the songs are amazing. - '....why can't a heterosexual guy tell another heterosexual guy that his ass is pretty fly?'
