  1. Hi guys, we are a pop/rock band who require a drummer. We are writing our own material, and we now have quite a lot of it ready to go. Our main influences are classic pop music, (Motown, Beatles, Phil Spectors stuff) alternative guitar bands (Smiths, Talkingheads) and Punk music (Dead Kennedys, Buzzcocks). Would be looking to practice at least once a week and to be gigging as soon as possible. We are all in our early twenties. If anyone is interested please send me a PM. Cheers
  2. I'm pretty sure your ideas about personal experience would be close to the truth. Certainly most of the people I have spoken to about this have said something along the lines of "I know that ghosts are real, because this one time (insert your own ghost story here)". I actually think there's a pretty big parallel with astrology, in that a lot of people who believe in it do so purely because they really want it to be true. Having said all that, I do find these unexplained paranormal stories fascinating reads.
  3. Yeah man, I didn't mean I personally have a problem with any specific belief of yours. I just meant that if you were waiting "until there is hard evidence to disprove the existence of ghosts" then it would be a long wait, because by definition there can't be. Apologies if it sounded terse, but the internet does that!
  4. The problem with this is, it is impossible to disprove that something exists. the burden of proof always lies with someone making extraordinary claims. I became aware of this when I did a lot of reading and thinking about the existence of God, but it equally applies to the paranormal or supernatural. Bertrand Russell came up with a good analogy for it, known as "Russell's Teapot". From the Wikipedia article - "Russell's teapot, sometimes called the Celestial teapot, Cosmic teapot or Bertrand's teapot, is an analogy first coined by the philosopher Bertrand Russell (18721970), to illustrate the idea that the philosophic burden of proof lies upon a person making scientifically unfalsifiable claims rather than shifting the burden of proof to others In an article titled "Is There a God?" commissioned, but never published, by Illustrated magazine in 1952, Russell wrote: If I were to suggest that between the Earth and Mars there is a china teapot revolving about the sun in an elliptical orbit, nobody would be able to disprove my assertion provided I were careful to add that the teapot is too small to be revealed even by our most powerful telescopes. But if I were to go on to say that, since my assertion cannot be disproved, it is an intolerable presumption on the part of human reason to doubt it, I should rightly be thought to be talking nonsense. If, however, the existence of such a teapot were affirmed in ancient books, taught as the sacred truth every Sunday, and instilled into the minds of children at school, hesitation to believe in its existence would become a mark of eccentricity and entitle the doubter to the attentions of the psychiatrist in an enlightened age or of the Inquisitor in an earlier time." Like I say, the analogy was specifically about the existence of a God, but it applies to any fantastical claim.
  5. A pair of songwriting guitarists are in need of some musicians to complete a band line up. Looking to play pop/rock with loud guitars basically. What we require - A drummer (if you are an ape who can bang on trash cans, you should also feel free to apply). A bassist. Preferably someone who can pick out melodies rather than pump out root notes. A Vocalist. You will also be required to write lyrics, as we can sometimes find that difficult. We're looking for someone who writes about interesting stuff, so please no sappy and vague romantic tributes. Would also be nice if your writing had a sense of humor. A sax/trumpet player. It would just be nice, wouldn't it? We already have plenty of songs written and are pretty driven to succeed. We are taking this seriously, so we would be looking for people who are pretty committed. If you are interested in any of these positions, please send a PM (unless you like the wombats, in which case, don't). Thank you!
  6. Hey there We're an embryonic wee band looking for a drummer. Looking to create a sound that is basically pop music, but played aggressively and loudly. Cool guitar parts (not just pumping out barre chords), good lyrics and just a generally energetic sound. Main influences would be stuff like Motown, The Stooges, The Smiths, The Velvet Underground, The Beatles, The Manics, that sort of thing, but all of us have pretty broad and eclectic tastes in music. At the moment we consist of a singer, a guitarist, a guitarist/keys player, and a bassist. We are all in our early twenties, would be looking for someone around that age. We are looking to take this as far as it will go, so we would need somebody who is dedicated. If you're interested, please PM me.
  7. 21 year old guitarist/songwriter is looking for a vocalist roughly the same age to write songs with (mainly the lyrics). Looking to make guitar based pop music (in my head I hear it like Iggy and the Stooges playing the greatest hits of the Supremes in a Raw Power style - make sense to anyone?) I have the rest of the band sorted out already, so no problems there, just need to find someone I can write songs with and get going really! I've written dozens of songs, but a lot of them don't really have any words, and I have plenty of pieces of music with no vocal melodies or anything. You don't need to be shit hot at singing, just as long as you can actually hold a tune and want to write songs real bad. My main musical loves are Motown, The Smiths, Talking Heads, The Clash, The Stooges, The Specials, The Cribs, The Beatles, The Velvet Underground etc. You don't have to like these bands, it's just to give you an idea what I like. If you are interested then P.M me.
  8. Pop band in the process of forming and looking for a drummer. So far we consist of a vocalist, a guitarist and a pianist/guitar player, and we might have a bassist lined up. Already started to write songs, aiming mostly for fast loud pop music you can dance to. Sort of going for the sound of the Stooges playing Motown songs. We really need a drummer to get going! You don't even really need to be particularly in to pop music, just as long as you want to do something interesting. Message me if you're interested.
  9. Singer and Guitarist who have just started writing songs together require a bassist and drummer to start a pop/rock band. Something loud and brash, but still fairly melodic. Our influences include the Beatles, The Clash, The Stooges, The Smiths, The Four Tops, stuff like that. If your interested, message me
  10. I'm a sort of intermediate guitarist whose looking to get involved with some sort of musical venture. I'm looking to start a pop rock band (like the four tops jamming with the stooges maybe?). Something loud, but melodic, I've already got some stuff written. Or I'd be happy just to join a band, if anyone needs a guitarist! If you're interested, message me!
  11. I think I might try get my hands on one too...
  12. I'm looking to start a band. Im an 18 years old guitarist whose been playing for three years. Might not seem long, but playing the guitar is pretty much all i do! I would like to start a rock band, writing our own material. i know a bass player and possibly a vocalist (were seeing if it works), but we really need a drummer!!! I want to make music with the violence and energy of Rock 'n' Roll and Punk, but mixed with the melodic sophistication of The Smiths or Joni Mitchell. Id also like to experiment. I've written some stuff, but im open to new ideas.
