  1. I have had bother with the NE use of the word 'fine' which when pronounced a certain way means 'really good' - those not familiar with the distinction have sometimes got a bit offended because they think I called something amazing simply acceptable, OK, inoffensive.

The use of the word 'rare' in the same context tends to cause confusion rather than offence - particularly when describing commonplace things of excellent quality :)

    I enjoy the confusion.

  2. OK, it wasn't Brexit, it was new windows - I'm getting some installed so I can view the impending Brexit fuelled meltdown clearer when I barricade myself in my house against the posses looking for Johnny Foreigner sympathisers to hang from lampposts.

Still got the sparkly Jack Casady though so it won't be all bad :)

  3. 2015 G&L Tribute SB-2 bass guitar in excellent condition. White with black pickguard. Been well looked after - no dings or buckle rash. Really powerful pickups (I got asked by a sound engineer if it was active - it isn't :) ). 34" scale. Controls are volume and volume - the idea is that you dial in and out the bridge pickup to alter your tone. Slim neck, Jazz width but a bit chunkier back to front.

I don't really want to sell it, but I had a higher than expected MOT bill for my car and it's the bass it would be the least PITA to get back one day if I was in the position.

I'm looking for £350, no trades please, sale only.  Tryouts welcome.

I'm trying to retrieve my bookmarks from a now old hard drive....

I have a new laptop and have managed to fire the old HD into a caddy to retrieve all my files, but I can't find any of my bookmarks on it.... I've tried to boot up from the old HD but it doesn't want to play ball. I also don't fuck around with all that signing in to Chrome shit, so they're possibly gone for good...... Are they?

    Cheers

  5. I've been pretty content with my lot for a while but I hear that Yamaha are about to revamp my favourite of their basses, the BB series.  Gone are the fussy chromed pickup rings, the inlays are more streamlined and modern, but it still retains the familiar but not body shape and I think these are the best looking BBs in a while.  My favourite which I wouldn't mind picking up is the BB734A.  First bass in a while which has said "buy me".

I'm also getting old so I think the burst looks best.  Kill me now.

  6. I'm selling a 2000 Yamaha SBV 500 bass - a recent reissue of the "Samurai" type of offset bodied basses of the 60s.  It's been modified with an EMG-BQC active EQ (3 band EQ with mid sweep) and a proper battery box.  Controls going away from the bridge are - stacked volume/volume, mid/mid sweep, treble/bass.  Bass is sparkly blue with a matching headstock.  In reasonable cosmetic condition - there are some dings on the body and quite a bit of buckle rash on the back (not mine!), some chips around the edges of the headstock and there is a crack in the headstock emanating from the E tuner hole but it hasn't moved in all the time I've had it.  2 Jazz-ish single coil pickups, pretty slim neck, balances surprisingly well considering the shape on a good leather strap.

Looking for £250 for this bass.  No trades.  Tryouts welcome.

  7. I assembled this pedal a couple of years ago from the Fuzzdog/Pedal Parts kit.  It's a bass fuzz (although I hear it's great on guitar too) and it's way too powerful for my needs.  So time to make some room.  It's obviously not worth much in monetary terms - the kit plus knobs will set you back about £40 and then you've got to build the damn thing.  So here it is, assembled.  Yours for £30.

No warranties with home assembly, but all I can say is that it's been unnecessarily (for the most part) carted around to gigs and rehearsals for 2 years now and it's still working great.  So, if you want some brutal fuzz for not many pounds, snap it up :)

Interesting, thanks!  Your description of "wooly" sums up what I would be worried about, I guess the pickup placement helps avoid that.  I was imagining it sounding like tho SG basses with the huge pickup right at the bottom of the neck.

Sure, pickup placement helps a great deal, but it also helps that the pickup isn't a mudbucker either (although the most recent SG basses have a TB+ masquerading as a mudbucker) - it's a special low impedance pickup designed precisely for this bass.  I can categorically state that it sounds not one jot like an EB/SG bass.  If you want a woofy/wooly sounding bass - try a Fender Starcaster - two massive humbuckers ("wide range" - riiiiight), one jammed up by the neck heel.  I gigged one once, had to use the bridge pickup to be heard at all and it just wasn't fun.  Also surprisingly heavy for a semi-hollow.  Sold it on.  The JC Sig couldn't be more different an experience in every respect.

I gigged my previous gold top JC Sig a few times and had no worries being heard whatsoever, my biggest trouble was finding a gig bag to fit the damn thing (I don't like hard cases)

That does look smart, how is it to play?  I imagine it could be quite "wooly" sounding, possibly better described as a more "vintage" bass tone.

Does "wooly" mean lacking in definition, devoid of any top end and gets utterly lost in the mix when the rest of the band are playing?  If so then no, it doesn't sound like that.  Quite unusual in feel because it's super light (not a surprise considering it's full of air) but with a big, round body.  No contouring on the edges takes a bit of getting used to as well.  But it doesn't take long to get used to the ergonomics - the lightness is a big bonus for long gigs (or when you're playing two gigs in one night with bruised ribs).  Also get to have bass feedback fun with it if you want - go near the amp with it ;)

  10. I sold a gold top Epiphone Jack Casady sig a couple of years ago.  That was a mistake.  Nearly went for one of the limited edition white ones, then Epiphone dropped this even nicer limited edition.  Too sparkly to ignore, so I snagged one.

I'm surprised they've sold any of these when you see the stock photography!

Doesn't that just look like a flat blue?  What were they thinking?  Anyway, I took it to a band rehearsal and I was having all sorts of hollow body feedback fun with it.  Good to have you back, buddy.

Where in Aberdeen can I purchase a violin or cello bow?

I ordered a cheap one via Amazon and it broke in transit, so I'd be keen to be able to get one in person.

I'd guess Top Note on Crown Street would be the place to go for all that trad instrument stuff.

  12. Sterling by Musicman SB14 (not the cheaper SUB line) for sale, this is the Indonesian made version of the Musicman Sterling bass. Kinda like a Stingray but it has a slimmer neck, differently contoured body, 3 way switch for series/single (with phantom coil)/parallel pickup wiring, 3 band active EQ. Metallic blue with matching headstock. In excellent condition, comes with a good quality gig bag and the original black pickguard if you prefer it to the white. Recently restrung with D'addario NYXL strings.

Yours for £400.  Only selling because something shinier (in my opinion) came along and it's one in, one out at the moment.
