BBC Radio Scotland Young Musician of the Year 2007, eighteen year old pianist Alan Benzie is a jazz star in the making. Originally a classical violinist, Benzie switched to jazz piano in his mid-teens and was soon featuring with the Tommy Smith Youth Jazz Orchestra andthe National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland as well as playing gigs with his own trio and trumpeters Valery Ponomarev and Colin Steele. Currently studying at Berklee School of Music in Massachusetts, where he has already won the 2008 Jazz Performance (Piano) Award, he returns to Scotland with fast-rising young rhythm team Andrew Robb (bass) and Jonathan Silk (drums) for an evening of swinging standards and high-energy original compositions. This performance is presented in association with the 2008 Aberdeen International Youth Festival. Imagine a younger version of The Unusual Suspects, say 25+ strong, mix in commitment and musical passion, add a few exciting new commissions and you have Cel Mr. Fiona Mackenzie at Celtic Connections Cel Mr is the Aberdeen International Youth Festival's young traditional big band, made up of some of the most promising young traditional musicians from not only Scotland, Canada and the USA. Ceol Mor will perform original and innovative arrangements of traditional Scottish songs and music as well as original work exploring the margins between traditional music, jazz and contemporary classical music, including a new piece for voices, as well as reviving The Wife o Kelso, a piece commissioned by Ceol Mor from Corrina Hewat, which was premiered at last years festival, and performed again at Celtic Connections earlier this year. The Jamie Safiruddin Quartet A youthful, energetic blend of Jazz, Groove, Funk & Fusion. The four piece band consisting of Keyboards, Tenor Saxophone, Electric Bass & Drums, plays a mixture of original compositions, jazz standards, and unusually chosen covers played in a unique and refreshing manner. The style of material they choose from can vary massively so come with an open mind. The four young men draw on a massive range of influences, new and old to create this exciting fusion. Joel Sebunjo Joel Sebunjo is a master multi-instrumentalist and vocalist born in Uganda and raised in Senegal. His music reflects the diversity of his musical journey that saw him come in contact with genres such as Mbalax, Malian Blues, Ndaga, salasa and Rhai.

The National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland with Mark Lockheart Directed by Malcolm Edmonstone and Andrew Bain Experience the future of Jazz music in Scotland. The National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland performs a programme of contemporary, boundary pushing music with renowned saxophonist and jazz improviser Mark Lockheart. Mark Lockheart is one of the most distinctive and creative musicians on the current British music scene. As a saxophonist and composer, his work often defies categorisation and crosses the boundaries of the jazz, new music and folk worlds. Hi. Aberdeen International Youth Festival have not taken over the Lemon Tree, we are hiring the venue for two weeks so we can put on music, dance and theatre during the Festival. AIYF takes over Lemon Tree for two weeks of new music and theatre! The recently reopened Lemon Tree is to become the home of the Aberdeen International Youth Festival for the duration of the 2008 event. The Lemon Tree will become the Festival Hub, a location at the heart of the city at which festival goers can have lunch, see shows, buy tickets and find out about what the festival has to offer. Festival director Stewart Aitken said: The reopening of the Lemon Tree has come at a great time for us and provided us with a focal point for the festival. It gives us the opportunity to create a place where people can come after the main concerts and see a wide range of music as well as giving us a great space to showcase some innovative and exciting theatre by young people. Hopefully our presence at the Lemon Tree will attract new audiences to AIYF as well as enable our core support to try something a bit different For the first time AIYF, in partnership with Foyer Music, will be holding late night sessions - Laterat the Lemon Tree. Laterat the Lemon tree willrun from Thursday July 31 and the late night festival sessions will showcase the best of up and coming, home-grown and international talent. Put together for the Orkney Folk Festival in 2004, the Lazy Boys have gone from strength to strength, bringing their high energy "stomp" music to the dance floors of the Northern Isles and Mainland Scotland ever since. Playing high profile support slots, through to their own headline gigs, they have set the floor alight wherever they have appeared. More recently, they have become "Danny" award winners at the 2007 Celtic Connections Festival. This year promises to be a busy one for the boys, with more festival dates on the horizon and their debut album in the pipeline. On Edge is a new music festival based in Aberdeen, to take place alongside the International Youth Festival - World Festival of Youth Arts. The purpose of On Edge is to present a platform for the discovery of new talent and provide opportunities for young bands to perform in music venues across the City.
