  1. Very strange - as I was at the final and thats not how we heard it announced. But rather than take my word for it here is the press release direct from Liz Hobbs website (Liz Hobbs Group - Events News Article)

AYRPLAY WINNERS, WHITE ACE ARE SET TO OPEN BURNS ROCK AT THE RACECOURSE

Scotlands new rock band, White Ace has sensationally beaten 5 other bands in the Final of the Burns Showcase for New Bands competition, AYRPLAY.

The young rockers from Cumbernauld will now join rock legends Status Quo in a support line up to open the stage on Saturday night at Burns Rock at the Racecourse, Ayr.

Held at Burns Festival Club in Wellington Square as part of the Burns AnAThat! Festival, White Ace battled it out against bands, Lunar, Acutones, Jiezuberband, The Bopping Heads and The Lindsey Dolan Band to win the competition.

The accredited judging panel for AYRPLAY included, Paul Fitzgerald, who represents artists including Beverley Knight, Leona Lewis, the X-Factor and Britains Got Talent, Liz Hobbs MBE of Liz Hobbs Concerts and Events, the largest promoter of live music events in the UK and Bill Briceland, local Ayrshire musician and music enthusiast who has been one of the main organisers of this years competition all agreed that the performances from all 6 bands were fantastic and found it hard to decide the winner.

In a twist to the competition, Aberdeen based rock band, Lunar will now also perform at the Burns Rock at the Racecourse, supporting winners White Ace. And it will be a memorable homecoming for lead vocalist Neil Glover who originally came from Ayr.

Festival Producer Liz Hobbs MBE said The standard of bands performing in the eight week competition has been exceptional and Im looking forward to working with several of the bands and developing some amazing talent over the forthcoming year.

The two runners up, The Bopping Heads and The Lindsey Dolan Band will perform at the Burns Rock at the Racecourse VIP Aftershow Party on Saturday night at the Festival Club in Wellington Square to join Quos front man, Rick Parfitt son, Rick Parfitt Junior and comedian Janey Godley for a night of music and entertainment.

The 2009 AYRPLAY Competition will get underway at the close of this years festival. Go to Burns Festival 2008 - Burns an' a' that! Poetry Music & Song for more details.

Oh well fair enough, no arguing with that. Runners up then still not bad.

  2. just wanted to make a correction to the above. Sadly, whilst Lunar got a 20 minute slot as opener at the gig they were not actually joint winners of the competition

White Ace from Cumbernauld won it outright and were on BBC news and got the 30 minute support slot before From the Jam and Status Quo

I wouldn't normally bother about this type of thing but I met the young White Ace guys about 3 times during the 8 weeks of the competition and its a big shame if someone is trying to steal their thunder.......or maybe it was just a genuine mistake that needs corrected

nothing against the other band but the boys that won the competition should be recognised for their great achievement!

Strange, Lunar were told they were joint winners by liz Hobbs, thats why they also got to play at the Status Quo gig right before White Ace. They were also offered the same deals as White Ace I belive. Were you at the final when both bands were announced? Also at the Roch at the racecource gig both bands were introduced as winners of the Ayrplay comp. Thats my undertasnding anyway not that its that big a deal.

Anyway I like White Ace as well, very good, considering their age and all and I am sure we will hear baout them again soon. White ace BTW can be found on myspace, they are also listed as a friend in lunars myspace page in the link above if anyone wants to check them out.

  4. 6 years ago! leeds 2000' date=' the first year of the riots.

The smell of burning portaloos will stay with me forever.

My favourite memory of that festival was sitting reading a book in my tent while a massive lightning storm pissed on everyone who was foolish enough to watch Placebo.[/quote']

    God 6 years ago!...

Yes I was one of those foolish ones....

I stayed in my tent when oasis played. What a good line up that year was...

Limp Bizkit (when they were good), Foo's, Rage against the machine, Slipknot, Idlewild, greenday, soulwax, Amen, queens of the stone age...so many

  5. I was at the Leeds festivel with Chris and Dave Officer, If I remember right, 3-4 years ago. It was excellent, then the last night came and before we knew it, buildings had been set on fire, including the port loo's which then exploded. The fire brigade came but were driven off by the crowds of drunken ppl. Next thing we knew 4 police vans arrrived and we were met by riot police in full get up. I honestly thought we were going to get batton charged at one point.

What also amused me was that a police helicopter was above the site most of the night which its powerful spot light on the site. SO what did some ppl sart doing...??? Trying to have a light saber dual with it, with there torches...lol..that was some festival!

  6. Just found out that for some odd reason radio 2 have put up a rough version of nothing that iam meant to be on there website, instead of the one recorded with Steve Levine..sigh..will have to get that remedied ASAP! Californai sun is the finished article however.

  7. Reading is not a contribution to discussion ;)

Just try to write a Lunar-free post once in a while yeah? :)

Ok I take your point:up: But I have contributed to other posts before...honest. Can you understand why I feel kind of fustrated when this kind of thing happens? I mean i am not doing anything wrong/ I am not being a dick, I hope. I am just trying to get some interest in them, to get ppl to come along and see a band they have never heard off.

Anyway...sorry for telling you to wise the fuck up, was a bit uncalled for.

  8. I don't see much interest. Perhaps you should look elsewhere for praise.

And exactly right' date=' you aren't the only person that puts stuff up about a local band, so how about contributing to discussion about [b']other bands once in a fucking while instead of every post being about your brother's band or whatever they are.

    Ah Ha

Well i think you will find that i have posted about other topics before. And I read most threads on here also, so get off your high horse.

  9. Ah' date=' hearsay.

Jut ask yourself this, if it was meant to be a set up, who set it up. The Little Kicks certainly don't have the contacts to set up a scam like that, so who did? Why would anyone do it anyway? What's in it for anyone (except the Little Kicks, who, as I've just pointed out, couldn't have set it up).

Also, was it not a panel of judges, so if Steve Levine was the only one to break from the plan, the little kicks should have came second, but they didn't, Stanley did.[/quote']

Yeah fair enough. Sorry i certainly dident mean to imply that the Littlekicks were dodgy or anything. You know what these competitions are like there is always some rumour going around about it.

  10. What? Set up? Are you having a laugh. Set up by who' date=' with who?

My bullshit detector is off the scale.[/quote']

I am simply repeating what i was told. The guys at the studio where Lunar recorded told them that. They said that levine was given a really hard time about it.

As I say just repeating back what I heard.

  11. Lunar are awesome!

Well that's what you wanted to hear' date=' right?

Now please fuck off with the Lunar groupie thing:)[/quote']

    Wise up.

I am not the only person on this forum who puts things up about a local band. I am not looking for praise...or any crap like that. This was put up for anyone who was interested. If your not interested dont look at it.. simple! I think there is a big problem in Aberdeen in being part of the in crowd. Let me tell you a wee story to do with this demo to limo thing.

It was mean to have been a set up. The little kicks were meant to win it but Steve Levine decided to pick the song he thought had potential despite coming under pressure from "Local" music activists. Lunar were unknown and still are pretty much unknown. I believe Stanley came second in that competition. Now there are hundreds of ppl who use this forum, not just the ppl who usually reply on this board. The stuff I post is for the general population of this board to see. How else do you suggest a band promotes itself..huh? I am getting sick fed up with the snidey comments which are made on a regular basis on here. If you dont like Lunar or any band then fine.... Dont read any of the posts put up with them in the title. I dont have aproblem with ppl not liking something but saying stupid things like..."stop the groupie thing"

    Once again....Wise the fuck up.

  12. Lol well thanks for all of those comments. Doesnt really bother me, I knew there were negative things to be said, but thought I would still put the review up for you all to see it. Incidentally after Neil read this review I think he ahs finally decided he is going to tone it down with the jumping around thing.

As I said before I think he points out some positive things and some negative things. I know the band spoke to the guy that wrote the article, and that was the impression they got as well. We will just have to wait and see what happens along other lines.

Persoanally I dont think the gig reviewed was the best one they have ever done ..I said in a previous msg that i thought the sound was crap, far too loud. I am sure people will make up there own opinon about Lunar either way, like or dislike. As I said just put the review up for those interested.

  13. Sure there were negative points...mainly about the singer climbing on top of things as usual, and a comment about one of the covers, but positive comments there also, well thats my reading it certainly doesnt say they are terrible/awful .

    e.g.

"'California Sun', a track from their first EP, sounds more polished, perhaps due to their recent work with Steve Levine as a result of winning Radio 2's 'Demo to Limo' competition, and comes across like a less boring Feeder while showing off bassist Steve Tosh's excellent backing vocals."

Fair enough the guy who wrote this doesnt like emo...even though persoanlly I dont even think they are emo esk..but hey...what do i know.
