  1. 2 years in this building. three in previous
  2. Fubar Just to let u know, they used the facilities here 4 years ago while Ronnie was on a sabbatical. Fubar should never be dissed because they ALWAYS put on a great show and have a loyal fan base cheers nathan
  3. Hi folks!! Thanks Andrew for your notes. I am glad that you have brought up the point about ownership and distribution of sound samples. My understanding of mechanical copyright is that unless the studio has taken out a specific contract with the artist then samples cannot be put on websites. and thus be "mechanically copied". Is that the reason? Anyway, gotta go, busy in the studio for the next wee while but I will be back to join in the debate soon. Cheers nathan ps. Andrew, am currently writing an arrangement of Toccata & Fugue by our mutual friend J.S. Bach for finger-tappin !!
  4. Is the Byre perfect and we in Aberdeen not??? hey Andrew! do you really think that your diatribes against Aberdeen studios are gonna attract customers? I respect your point of view, and you have every right to express it, but do you really think that you will endear yourself to Aberdeen based bands if all you spend your time on is elitist technology stuff ?? Where is your soul, man ? Where is your heart and your joy about the creativity in music ? Can you only see opportunities to state "how much better the byre is than everyone else because of all our cool expensive kit" ??? SO, come on, lighten up ! Every studio doesnt have to be exactly like yours to be valid - or does it ? If you have something constructive to add to the debate, then it is about time we heard it, rather than your usual complaints. cheers Nathan
  5. Hello Cloud !! Well, if you are interested to see, why dont you come and have a look? You seem really keen to diss something you havent seen. And for your information, this studio had been working succesfully for two years and is a stand alone building !! The Mill is an excellent facilty. And big respect to exile and the moorings and captain toms. There is clearly enough work for all to go round. So thanks to you Cloud for all the attempted adverse publicity - it only makes real musicians more curious about what is on offer. So, rather than all your increasingly negative stuff, how about some positive ideas about how studios can serve their customers better ?? One thing is for certain. NO-ONE is under any illusions when they record here - what you see is what you get, and what you hear is even better !! Come on Cloud, lighten up !! Cheers Nathan
  6. Friends !! Dear Friends out there in the recording world ! Please let me make myself extremely clear. At our studio, we get the results that top UK studios get: - in the quality of the performances and in the combined skill of the artists and the production. So, to see you all reel off lists of " My car is bigger than your car " and stuff like that is pathetic !! I am fascinated about how wonderful the client list is at the Byre in the Highlands, New York etc. But out here in the real world it is a very different world to yours. So do not go trying to rubbish the Aberdeen based studios just to big yourself up. Why dont you start your own topic rather than invade this one? So, if any prospective bands are reading this topic, please be aware that at OCEANROCK STUDIOS we do not spend our time splitting hairs about technology. We have good equipment, we have a good attitude and we do not mess about !! Best of all is that we get great performances out of the artists because they prefer a no nonsense approach. Now, as for the list of bands, these are influences not clients. And if you understand who these bands are, then you will understand what as a studio we do. Cheers nathan
  7. OCEANROCK STUDIOS v THE MILL Opeth. Deicide. Emperor. Dimmu Borgir. Trivium. Machine Head. Cradle. Lamb of God. The Used. Henry Rollins. Fight Club. Does that answer your question ? Cheers nathan www.oceanrockstudios.co.uk
  8. Too right !! Thanks for your thought' date=' Bobby !! have al ook at the website and drop me an email if you like !! Cheers Nathan ( [i']the self-confessed "switched-on" producer! ) www.oceanrockstudios.co.uk
  9. V-Drums versus Acoustic Drums - the truth !! Hi there! Great to see so much debate about V-Drums and acoustic drums. At OCEANROCK STUDIOS we use and record both. And there are very clear reasons why :- V-Drums - for new bands with limited cash they can come in and start recording without the hours required to set up the acoustic kit. Also, we can record the midi from the Roland and then select sounds later on in the final mix! ( which obviously you cannot do with the acoustic kit!! ). For the techies out there, we can also quantize it !!! Acoustic kit - for those who can afford the set up time and have a quality drum kit which is well tuned and rattle free! So, no option is better than the other because it depends on how much time and money you have. Cheers nathan www.oceanrockstudios.co.uk
  10. Try OCEANROCK STUDIOS Aboyne !! Hi there! why not come out to Aboyne and try our studio ? Much closer than the central belt, lots of good gear and a properly switched on producer! Have a look at www.oceanrockstudios.co.uk. Cheers Nathan
  11. WOW Steve Hillage is alive and well !! Friends, gotta tell you - I was at a few of his gigs back in the day when the album "L" came out and saw him tear it up with a Quad PA system for his guitar solo!! I like dthe fact that his solos were very melodic, nothin to weird or highspeed but just about right. And is it any surprise that he is still going strong with the Drum n' Bass community, you just cant keep a good musician down!! Come out to OCEANROCK STUDIOS in aboyne - www.oceanrockstudios.co.uk and I will teach you how to play "Salmon Song" " Master Builder" and "Flying Teapot" Cheers! nathan
  12. Thanks to Chris and CliveRavensby from OCEANROCK Guys, thanks for adding voices of reason to the debate about recording costs. We cannot scare young musicians off by saying that good recordings are "mega expensive" . I have a good analogy ( is that how u spell it?). Imagine two young car drivers have to get to a gig in Aberdeen from Banchory. One is offered the hire of a Ferrari at 500 a day and the other offered a VW Golf at 100. Do they both get to Aberdeen? - Yes. Is the quality of the experience the same - Yes because the important thing is to get to the show and not how flash the car is. My point is that the important thing is to write good songs, capture the magic of the artists and get the CDs to the audience or the MP3 to them over the web !! At OCEANROCK STUDIOS, we can record low-fi or hi-fi, 11Khz or 96 Khz, 8 bit up to 24 bit. If it sounds good, then we have done our job. If it sounds bad, then we have failed. And if the bands have a lot of fun during the process and end up with recordings they can be proud of and their fans like it, then that is fantastic !! Cheers Nathan If interesetd in our studio, check us out at www.oceanrockstudios.co.uk
  13. OCEANROCK STUDIOS equipment Hi! Protools 6.4 using Focusrite preamps is proper Protools. If you dont agree ask Digidesign. Our website details the monitors and amplifiers used - Tannoy, Soundcraft and Alesis. Microphones galore here as well. And you should here our 24 bit 96Khz stuff !! Hope that answers your questions. Cheers Nathan
  14. OCEANROCK STUDIOS speaks !!! Hello again! Thanks to MTA for putting forward the producers' view. My view from OCEANROCK STUDIOS is that the most important thing in a studio are the artists talent in their performance. You could spend thousands on London studio time with phenomenal equipment, but if there is no spark in the song, it aint worth it!! Am interested in the Devin Townsend approach, his albums have an amazing sound for a low tech studio, so it is all about the combination of the artists and the producers talent. That is why 75 spent at Exile can be of far more value than 1000 pounds at another studio - if the quality is there, it will be captured !!. And I guess Dave Grohls home studio has managed to capture a good sound... OCEANROCK STUDIOS is an open plan combined live and control room where musicians are doing overdubs while looking at Protools filling up the 17" flat panel screens. Producing should never be a black art from behind the glass!! We record everything digitally apart from voice and occasionally drums, but once a drummer hears how Roland V-Drums sound on the recording they are hooked !!. So, if there are any of you out there who want to use a studio where you can come straight in and start real recording straight away then give us a call. Or check out the website www.oceanrockstudios.co.uk. Cheers Nathan
