  1. Just come across this post and saddened to hear about Mike's demise. Quite some years ago he stood in for my band Souled Asylum at AECC. Despite no rehearsal, all I had to do was show him the set list, remind him what came next and give him the odd tab nod and he never missed a beat. Very acomplished and solid drummer. No fuss, just sat in the mix and drove it. Downside was he ripped into the rider and by end of the night he could'nt stand up. We packed his kit away for him, drove him home in the truck and delivered him home. Upside, I have it all on VHS tape even ripping into the rider before taking stage. RIP Mike and thanks for the memories...........

  12. Update Slot filled. Welcome Jock the Ripper Thanks to all other interested parties.
  13. Back in Feb/March I stuck up a similar request and got some decent replies, aknowledged these but had to put the project into hibernation due to work commitments. Sorry for repeating. Project to get the band going again has started and line up is almost fulfilled. Got 4 on horns, 2 on keyboards, bass guitar, rythmn guitar, trying out drummers, trying out singers of which we land on 4 or 5 and finally also need to fill the lead guitar slot. I reckon it will be a 14 or 15 piece line up when nailed. Big sound doing soul and R&B covers in a hard hitting bass and drum driven way. This band will not play like pussies............ Need an experienced guitar player with own transport and decent gear happy to play a role in such a big set up. Practise every Thursday out at Kintore. Get on YouTube for Vintage Trouble and take in the guitar on " A Little Help From My Friends" and " Nobody Told me " . Gigging is in the long term. There will be many months of getting the line up right and then weekly rehearsing to get to the pro standard of the last band. Drop me a mail via www.souledasylum.co.uk Thanks Mike
  14. Souled Asylum ( www.souledasylum.co.uk ) are looking for a technically competent and hard hitting drummer. Drop me a line via website if interested. Thanks Mike
  15. Hi Karstasaurus..............harmonies and back up vocals eh. If your voice is in the style of Alesha Keys, Etta James, Joss Stone, Joan Osborne , Florence Rawlings, Adele etc etc then have a look at www.souledasylum.co.uk. After some years of lay off the band is being resurrected and we are looking for female vocals to try out. Big band, big sound, all gear provided , oh and generally big gigs. Thanks Mike
  16. Ampeg SVT Head Thanks for the confirmation that the head is the Vietnam model Keiran. Nothing wrong with these heads but my ears and bass sensors prefer the USA model for which I am searching. Good luck with the sale. I would get it up on ebay and I am sure you will get a decent price this way, despite the usual ebay hassle. Mike
  17. Ampeg SVT Bass Head - Is It Still Availabe Hi Keiran, Is the head the " Made in Vietnam " model ( usually since 2007 I think ) or the " Made in USA " model ? If the USA model, whats your bottom line for cash this week ? Sorry but if the Vietnam model I will pass......... Thanks Mike
  18. Souled Asylum - Mark Ronson Style ! - Vocalists Required This forum rocks................ The band resurrection has come on leaps and bounds : Horns - 4 piece section in place Drums - In place Bass - Yours truly Rythmn Guitar - In place Lead Guitar - Lots of offers and try outs planned Keyboards - in place Hammond - In place Which leaves the biggest worry of all.............VOCALS This band will play soul/R&B/Up Temp Blues etc etc in a power soul type of way re-arranging covers to create dance floor fillers. Vocals have to be powerful, full ranged and capable of strong harmonies. Unfortunately it is not suited to Katy Melua type voices. so............. male lead/backing singers in the style of Jess Roden, Paul Rogers, Chris Farlowe, Mick Hucknall, Cliff Bennett Otis Redding,Eric Burden , etc etc : female lead/backing singers in the style of Alesha Keys, Etta James, Joss Stone, Joan Osborne, Florence Rawlings etc etc No equipment needed. It will all be provided. Thanks to those that have responded already and details are logged. Get togethers and try outs planned within the next couple of weeks. Thanks Mike
  19. Is that you Gary ? Did you come from Stonehaven and audition quite some time ago for the previous lne up ? If so quite pleased to see you are interested. Drop me a PM please Thanks Mike
  20. Souled Asylum - Mark Ronson Style - Update Wow.................had many responses to the original post and great to see so many talented musos out there that are interested in the project. Plan to organise a get together in the next few weeks, which of course will require try outs for the oversubscribed slots and subscribed slots to nail the line up going forward. As all my gear ( Backline, PA, etc etc ) is down south I also have to re-organise transport ( 7.5ton truck with tail lift ) to get sufficient rehearsal gear to get going. Finally, where oh where are the keyboard players. No responses at all ( except Jen ) This is a great music environment for keyboard adventure and I can also chuck a Hammond B3 and Leslie into the mix ( Okay not my prized B3 but a chop done in Germany ) Ideally looking for a keyboard player and a Hammond player. Thanks Mike 8-)
  21. Souled Asylum ( "Souled Asylum" )............................ at its prime, was voted Scotlands best live band and proudly sold out Lemon Tree on 9 occasions and graced the AECC corporate stage on many other occasions. We had players from Acergy, Technip, Amec, Aker and so on. A real Aberdeen oil services band ! Sadly it had to be shut down some years ago as it had ran its course and lost its sparkle and in music terms this is fatal and is the time to get out. Its now time to get back in..................folk have convinced me that the city misses such a band, playing at pro-level, using top of the range equipment and having a great time. Oh, and the urge to play again helps !! The band will be put back together with some old faces but mainly with a majority of new faces. " YOU " So far we have a four piece horn section, top notch drummer, keyboards, rythmn guitar and bass. The planned additional line up is lead guitar and male/female singers plus keyboards/Hammond. I reckon with all the talent that graces this forum, there are musos out there who would like to do something a bit different in a big gathering. If you are or know of ; male lead/backing singers in the style of Jess Roden, Paul Rogers, Chris Farlowe, Mick Hucknall, Cliff Bennett Otis Redding,Eric Burden , etc etc : female lead/backing singers in the style of Alesha Keys, Etta James, Joss Stone, Joan Osborne, Florence Rawlings etc etc keyboard player/ Hammond Organ player and lead/rythmn guitarist with clean tones and in the style of Norma Beaker, Gary Moore, Jeff Healy etc then please get in touch. Must be a good standard as this unit will play at pro-level. As for logistics, there will be weekly rehearsals every Wednesday evening circa 7pm to 10pm probably in a studio at Inverurie. Plan to start in the next few weeks when I can get back down south to bring some gear back !! Singers do not need any gear. It will be provided Keyboards do not need any gear. It will be provided unless you prefer your own. Hammond B3 or C3 or B3 chop with Leslie will be provided. Music is predominantly up tempo soul and RnB, you know the stuff that fills the dance floor ala Mark Ronson style. It is a covers band NOT a "Tribute Band " Not for everyone I know but it is good damn fun with such a mix of folk and instruments. Love to hear from previous members..................:love:8-) PM is interested Thanks Mike
  22. Female Singer If you can sing like Florence Rawlings, Etta James, Joss Stone, Joan Osborne ie power vocals with great range then look up Souled Asylums thread of today. We are looking for female vocals both lead and backing. Could also do with some keyboard skills to fill in PM me if interested or reply to the SA thread. Thanks Mike
  23. Bass Gear Hi BAC, If its 800 quid for your described set up and it is all in working condition, I will have it. PM me and we will arrange the logistics etc. Mike "Souled Asylum" ( coming back )
  24. Crap Sandwiches Hello I,m back...... So you have played with several shit acts and are from England, how does that qualify you to be so judgemental? Well Bluesxman the several shit acts and I guess you accept several shit hot acts, put me all over the UK and Europe so I guess you can say that the qualification is experience and lots of it. Further as the original thread invited comments, I gave a personal opinion. This summerised into keep going and get tighter and lose the MC as far as the band was concerned, and tweak the drum sound on the recording................hardly judgemental wouldnt you agree ?? Come on, he's been on stage with Lulu!! Youre absolutely correct Mr Jan Deal and when youre young and broke nowt wrong with prostituting ya bass playing services. The gig fee kept me in booze, fags and women for frigging ages, oh and the other session musos were the dogs danglies. Great exposure and its great on the CV. Were you listening to the streaming download on-line or the actual CD? What were you listening to it on? Fair question Flash, and I have to say it was on my PC thru Nexo PS8,s,driven by a Crown amp and a Allen and Heath desk.........minor set up in the flat !! The sound source was a streaming download and not the CD. Accepted that such a source is not good so I may be clouded. I do like a rasping snare mind you. Guilty as charged. Thanks
  25. Shit Can The Frog Right off let me declare an interest here. Colin ( RockAusten ) played tenor sax in my band for a number of years prior to its shut down and therefore we are well aquainted. He knows me as a straight ahead sort who will give anything a fair listen and a good old honest personal opinion. I remember when I got handed a demo CD of his other band Ghost of Bongo some time ago and I honestly thought it was decent in recording, songs and playing. Bass player a bit slap happy, and drums a bit immature but given time I felt the band would mature into a decent unit. Now I have been on the No Soucis website and quite frankly I thought the Youtube stuff was dreadful and should be pulled. Then listened to the EP sound tracks and thought they were better and tighter. Mind you I know this is a live recording off the desk but the bleeding drums sound dreadful. HipHop has to drive and relies on the bass drum, snare and hihat work with simple bass lines to give it the turbo charged V8 throb. Snare sounds like a friggin kleenex tissue and is not rasping. Also shit can the frog on vocals and get someone who knows what rap is all about. HipHop has to be tight as a gnats arse in the backline and this comes with plenty of practise and decent players. I think the players are there, they just need to gell and work harder. I would suggest keep at it and given time it will click. Dig out some old John Cooper Clarke stuff and see how it was done in the 70s before it got all drop pants and cool ! What do I know.........jack shit about recording but I know how things should sound and this is not right. My qualifications.......from Teesside, still am, but good old Aberdeen oil business puts the bread on the table. Decades of playing, zillions of bands, mates and fellow musos include, Coverdale, Rea, Moody , Rogers. Been on stage with everyone from Cocker to Traffic, Shadows to Lulu, Gallagher to Free and Frampton to bleeding Gerry Marsden ( did a stint as resident bass player in Titos nightclub. He was an arse ) So Colin, dont give up the day job, enjoy your project, practise like hell and for goodness sake drop the frog........ End
