  1. I'm currently reading One day in the life of Ivan Denisovich by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. Its about the life of a political prisoner in a soviet "special" camp after the war. Its not as depressing as it sounds, before that it was two Prachett novels -Wee free men and erm...some other instantly forgetable one. The next on the list is the Crazy dervish and the pomegranate tree by Farnoosh Moshiri. Its another about prison in Iraq during the regilous revolution. I seem to be reading a lot about prisoners at the moment....hmmm....perhaps I'm feeling trapped in my life or something.... Pete inthehills
  2. It was the things he said to camera before the final run that was so amazing. Him saying that this could be the worlds biggest crash, and after the second run he's just panting and saying I feel so alive, so alive. Clarkson was pretty good about it, he kept the banter going and kept it light hearted. There was even a mocking edge to his final speed kills comment. Pete inthehills
  3. I loved this book. It was all sooo believeable (except for the bit on the island.) I liked the way he included loads of facts about other survivers, ways to train Richard the Tiger, diet, what to look for when searching for land. The bit about him catching and killing his first fish was brilliant. As a long time veggie I could relate to all his thoughts and guilt. Just blinkin' marvellous. Pete inthehills
  4. Yeah Dude, I'm never going to aspire to greatness, so you have to take the helm! We need a company secretary, you know, long legs, good hair, nice tattoos. I tend to reread a lot of my books almost as a relaxing thing. I've been reading some pretty heavy stuff recently so to reread Prachett is to give my brain a rest from genocide or the mad imaginations of an 16th centuary ex-monk. I imagine if you've taken reading as your degree and then have been forced to read certain books regardless of personal choice I'd imagine it'd take a while to get back your reading mojo. pete inthehills
  5. wouldn't it be ironic if the "powers that be" followed Tubthumpers suggestion and started giving out temp bans to folk whose thread had to be closed down.... ...and then had to ban tubthumper 'cos his thread was closed. heheheh. Personally I'm hoping that this thread gets cut down in its prime so that being banned from Aberdeen music adds many points to my street cred. heheh Pete inthehills
  6. Being a cheap skate I didn't even buy I, Lucifer, I just got it out of the local library. They've got some weird stuff in our local library. I've just finished A Sunday at the Pool in Kigali which is about the massacre of tutsis by Hutus in Rwanda. It is not a nice book. You should all check out your library, if only to borrow cd's and rip them to your mp3 players. I also have a long train journey in to Aberdeen each day to go to work and I read in the evenings listening to music 'cos tv bores me. I'm guessing most folk have read some of the books on the list but just haven't bothered to post anything. oh, and if you want a good "read" why don't you try Andrzej Klimowski's The Secret. Hehehe. (once you've read it, you'll know why I think its slightly amusing) Pete inthehills Vice president of Team Readathon.
  7. How cool would that be? but what would we call it? hmmm..... The Spoonie and Pete read books and say stuff about it club? Pete and Spoonie's Reading thing? any ideas Spoonie? Pete
  8. yeah you fecking slackers! Stick down some thoughts about the books or is it that you'll all mouth and no reading. I know that some of you are teenagers but you should have been taught to read by now. What happened to all that enthusiasm when a book forum was suggested? Either that or you'll just have to put up with Spoonie and me whittering on. you have been warned. Pete inthehills
  9. top banana maybe? Don't tell anyone but I've always had a soft spot for Carol Smilie. I'm not sure why. I think I need help. Pete inthehills
  10. oh yes! Proper beer is ace. That lager pish is just that, pish! My favourite changes with time, when I first tasted Speckled Hen it was my favourite, but now I can't decide between Bitter and Twisted or Dark Island. Although Waggle Dance is good and you can't go wrong with a bottle of Old Jock. Pete inthehills
  11. Well, I got a new car and one of those wii thingys with some games and tickets to go to American soon. When I told my friend, he said he wished he had leukemia too! Pete inthehills
  12. I saw them at the Lemon tree last year. He was wasted, they appeared on stage an hour late. I don't think Mark E Smith used the same microphone for more than 10 minutes without swapping it for another. He annoyed the rest of the bad by interferring with their amps etc and then when he'd had enough he put his jacket on and left the stage. It was worth seeing for the occasional glimpse of the Mark E Smith brilliance, but I probably won't make the effort again. pete inthehills
  13. Hi Anyone here use wippit.com to download music? I've not been able to log on in the last couple of days and I was wondering if its just me or is the site down? any help gratefully recieved. Pete inthehills
  14. well, I've finished it. It only took me 2 days which is a good sign. What can I say? its a good read. I was a bit disappointed at first by the ending, but then I wondered what was a good ending to such a book and when I trawled through the possibilities I decided that the ending was fine as it is. As a character I thought that Lucifer had far too much empathy and would the devil really have been so nice to Penny? Or given a shite about Violet? I enjoyed it. Pete inthehills
  15. Phrases that are awesome... From my boss - "Well done Pete, take the rest of the year off and here's a big bonus" From the wife - "Sure you can spend the weekend getting pissed and shagging strangers in Newcastle, call me when you need picking up." From gorgeous woman on train - "Hey, can I give you a blow job?" From national lottery spokes person - "Here's the cheque for 100 million." Shame none of them have ever been said to me.... 16. the Johnny Clash bit was the funniest. Pete_inthehills
  17. I'm sure that there is a joke about post mortems here, but I just can't be bothered to work it out. pete inthehills
  18. Nil by Mouth. its not entertainment. To use some dodgy cliches its hard hitting, gritty reality. Watch it. Enjoy the acting/script but you can't enjoy the film. pete inthehills
  19. when does the nominations finish? when do we start the first book? pete inthehills
  20. I have to dodge round dead fish on my way to work as well. Stinky, flattened fish. As for my pet hates. The pets I hate are gerbils, yappy little dogs and stick insects. pete inthehills

  22. that's the fella. its more the whole series rather than one book. pete inthehills
