1. I recommend you start Modest Mouse with "Three Inch Horses/ Two Faced Monsters"; it's acoustic and is quite wonderful. I don't understand how you could prefer the Sun Kil Moon material. But everybody has different tastes. I recommend that one song if you try listening to them again though.
2. There is a free song by Stars called "Your Ex-Lover Is Dead" on last.fm Go and see!
3. I've listened to the album just once more, and it was just to see whether I was being to hard on them. But their covers just don't seem adequate and I swear that there are better acoustic interpretations that could be performed. And Tiny Cities Made of Ashes is supposed to have that electronic infused aspect to it; it's not supposed to be calming and reflective. Lines like "yeah we're drinking coca cola, I can feel it going right on down my throat" just don't seem like they'd be best along with acoustic guitars. The whole concept might be inspired by the calm ending of the song but I just think as an interpretation it is not very good at all. I apologise for people who like the song but comparitively it is just a bad idea.
4. "Here Comes the Summer". I love that one, it's on the E.P.
5. Yeah, I do cringe when he starts singing "I just got a message from God saying 'hey boy get a sweater right now'". That's my favourite line and they somehow ruin it completely.
6. I really love "Have You Forgotten" though. It's maybe the most wonderful moment in a film that is so full of them.
7. I didn't like that album very much but it depends on which album you heard first, the Sun Kil Moon or Modest Mouse. See my old flatmate had quite a lovely taste in music but he preferred Sun Kil Moon's version of Tiny Cities Made of Ashes. For me there is no comparison but it is perhaps how the song struck me at first. I really don't like the covers album very much myself though.
8. Ah, perfect. I already decided I was going to play A Time For Emily by the Elected in that show so it should be quite a challenge making the playlist work. But if you listen in (well, you don't need to) I will certainly play it towards the beginning of the show. Ahh, that just made the playlist work. Ok, try tuning in towards the beginning and it will be the first song that I will play.
9. That's right. I hope this next show is alright, because the last time I was sneezy and rambling way too much. But I've got some interesting choices so it'd be nice if you listen in. Don't expect anything out there though. Most of my music is just pop or folk music. I don't really have much of a varied taste.
10. That would make you and Edgar Prais a very good pair, then. Please keep me informed. I'd play Asleep At The Wake on my radio show given I had a copy I could stick on a c.d. I swear that's one of the best songs I heard this Spring.
11. There's a band that have still to play called Montmartre that I really quite like. Hopefully this encourages something... Apart from that- Edgar Prais The Jinx (and the Void when they were kicking about) Copy Haho The Xcerts Kitchen Cynics My favourite of those is probably the Xcerts- alas for they are in Brighton or some place are they not?
12. What a wonderful way to talk about an album. I especially liked the last sentence even if you were being a little over-romantic. I'll have a look for him on limewire before I make any decisions. Jacob Golden's "Out Come The Wolves" 7" is especially good (I don't know whether there is a c.d. release) and he's coming back to support the Autumns on the 17th November. I think you'd like him very much actually. He's like that musician I talked about, Joseph Arthur.
13. I am just going to mention my radio show that's on on Thursday at 1pm. It'd be nice to have requests which- if plausible- I will do for the next week. Things I'll be playing vary every week but I'm going to go with some pop music rather than the usual folk I have playing. I made a bit of a playlist and have put such artists as Dananananaykroyd, The Hold Steady, Tom Waits, Nathan Fake, Deerhoof and The Eames Era. Any suggestions and I will have a look before then.
14. You say that but I insist that Meat Loaf is still living in the eighties.
15. Id Do Anything for Love (But I Wont Do That) by Meat Loaf- a Bonnie Tyler favourite and the epitomy of what was good about the eighties, and I disagree with it's positioning entirely. I agree that the "Sounds of Silence" by Simon and Garfunkel is wonderful as well, in fact most of their material is, apart from post duo material. But that's only on Art Garfunkel's part since he was never a very good songwriter. "The End" by the Doors I also quite like. But it might be for the context in Apocalypse Now. "Superman" by Five for Fighting is wonderful and I have no idea why they handpicked that when there are ample opportunities for slating other artists. "Ebony and Ivory" I completely understand, because there is nothing worse than anyone recanting those lyrics. I disagree mostly with the list, although I'm glad they didn't do the usual Britney Spears, Hanson thing because that's just dumb and those musicians are actually quite competent. I just think making lists is a very bad idea.
16. I'll be listening. Could you play some Fiery Furnaces if I request?
17. Yes, I suppose I was being a little negative. I like doughnuts and coffee as well.
18. I think they're wonderful but it's quite difficult to find what you especially want. I've been downloading bootlegs from the past few years, trying to find just some songs that compare to "Going to Georgia" (I have a live version which is indescribable). It's quite difficult. John Darnielle is a really amazing musician but I think I'll need to take a bit of time to get through all of his back catalogue. Is the tape in digital form by any chance?
19. I adore the former and have been told that M. Ward is quite interesting. Think you could tell me more about the album?
20. Rhona Cameron is a very good stand up comedian. I disagree with you completely though. I think there are some very good takes on comedy and you have to be very open minded about it all. And heaven forbid you turn on the other BBC channels because everyone knows they're very low budget and bound to be only sometimes reasonable. Just be patient. Ot make your own comedy show.
21. I just don't think I could ever prefer a doughnut to a good old danish pastry and a cup of coffee. Sugar icing swirl, pecan and maple syrup, then your french breads as well. I just don't see the comparison. And the advertising campaign makes the idea less attractive. I just don't like eating from a box that said "Krispy Kreme" or even any commerical outlet that sells junk food. Surely someone just prefers chocolate digestive biscuits. They're way less overpriced as well.
22. I feel like a cheapskate but I have spent quite a lot on Radiohead merchandise and I donate to charities. Will comment on the album after classes today.
