  1. Gone away for a while... Hey everyone, sorry for not adding anything to this convo for a while but i have just moved back down to dundee for the start of uni again. Just to say thanks again everyone for your support of skating during these difficult times and hope to see you all round. If youre coming down to dundee send us a pm. See you all as soon as possible. Jon
  2. Damien Hurst.......hmmmmmmmm I think that what damien hurst was originally doing was very different from what was around at the time and that was what made him such a revolutionary artist at that time. What he created started to get him talked about because it was so extreme and thats what has to be done to make it in the modern art scee at the moment. I think that now Hirst is just playing on what he has done before and it isnt fresh anymor and as you say a bit contrived. Not really loving it that much. As for the anime drawing i absolutely love it. Im glad they have some more modern pieces in there rather than upstairs where they have all the classics (which however are still inspirational but i have seen them about a million times).
  3. Just also to say as i have been doing recently in an after thought i think that spell checker sums up the situation in the best way i could have ever hoped for. How long have you been skating anyway and will i have seen you around? Jon
  4. Really good progress.... Before i start i would like to thank spell checker for opening this new thread, good work man. Firstly one good piece of news is that the Press and Jounral has acknoledged that the accident was in no way the skaters fault and that it was just an unfortunate coincidence. Secondly im really glad to see such positive feed back from all you guys and just to remind you all to private message me if you are interested in helping the aberdeen skate scene or skatepark creation process. Or you can e-mail me at rubbits_2001@hotmail.com. To answer a few points that have been made in terms of cost and so on one thing i would like to mention is that the reason it is going to cost so much money is because it is so much more than just a skatepark as mentioned in the other thread. An outdoor park on its own that can be used for free (such as the one in Perth) only cost the council down there 250, 000 and that is quite simply one of the best skateparks i have ever been to. This is why i have to emphasise the importance of getting this park right and not wasting more money on something that will yet again fail to meet expectations. If we do have a world class skate and extreme sports facility here then that will definately draw crowds since scotland has only got about 2 or 3 indoor parks whcih as you all know from the weather is not anywhere near enough to support scotlands skate scene. In response to clouds disbelief of the amount of support for this project go to any skating event in scotland and you wont be able to move from the number of people at the venue, i know cos ive been to enough (for example the kemnay opening day). Basically what we need to do to keep things rolling is support skateboarding in aberdeen and im trying to get something together as a representative of aberdeen street skaters to help keep skateboarding afloat from this horrible incident. One thing that i have come to understand about talking to guys who knew sean today is that even he would have not wanted this to put a stop to aberdeens skate scene. Thankfully authorities such as the press and journal are beggining to support us but i am just being on the safe side in case something were to happen or be done in relation to this incident. Please e-mail me your support and i will get back to you with information direct from the council. Ill be in touch, for sean and skate culture Jon
  5. I have to agree with rachie and hardcore mels points. To build something in a deserted stretch of land would be perfect and thats what the working group meetings with the council have been trying to do. We have been trying to get something like this for years and were getting so close, we just need to not let something like this, however tragic, be turned into a negative against skateboarding. In response to clouds message you should take into consideration what was said earlier about having a place to skate all year round. Although we may still skate the streets occasionally a good skating facility would be a place we were allowed to skate without being moved on or abused by the public and if the park is done properly would reduce the number of skaters in the centre. If anyone is looking to help out with supporting a skate park or the aberdeen skate scene then drop me a message letting me know your support. If you cant get a message through to me in here than you can e-mail me on rubbits_2001@hotmail.com. A short note just to finalise things with Lester Burnham saying that i can understand where you are coming from with your comments and i really dont want to cause dispute between us so i am just going to say that all my points made in relation to this point have been made already and that is simply my opinion on the matter. Thanks again Jon
  6. Another brief afterthought In relation to Lesters comment on people getting injured in skateparks, people get injured on BT aswell but the majority of the time it is all done in a sober state of mind and this incident was simply a combination of factors that unfortunatly lead to the unthinkable. What would the papers be saying if it had happened any other night? Jon
  7. Skateboardings Defence Continued I really dont want to be pursuing a point this badly but i intend to continue to defend BT as a skate spot since i believe for skaters it is still a perfectly safe arena which although it is not designed for us it is still the only decent place we have. I really dont want to get into a debate over this but i will always consider BT to be my second home for skateboarding and learning to skate (the first being Broad Street but we all know what happened there). What happened is tragic but i dont want BT to be disgraced because of it, sean will naturally always be remembered but i still believe BT to be a natural haven for skateboarders because it was somwhere out of the way where we could be left alone to do what we love and that was why so many people came there and respected it. If BT gets cut off for skaters by skate stoppers like Broad Street did then the skate population will be literally suffocating from lack of a place to go. I would also like to merit helvetica point about skate parks since i am first and foremost a street skater but at the same time spell checker makes a good point about having a place to go all year round. Concerns i have with a skate park are firstly cost. In dundee the new factory skatepark is an amazing park but a 5 for a two hour session it is a bit steep for students with limited cash flow. A large part of street skating is being outside and enjoying your surroundings as you're skating, there is a major difference between skating in an enormous warehouse and skating out in the blazing sunshine all day for free. As much as a i would love a skatepark there is the abvious fact that unless it is an astounding park with everything we could ever need then people are still going to skate the streets. The dieal would be a park with both in and outdoor sections that isnt solely a ramp park. I think that im just wishing for the impossible but i am going to push for the best we can have and continue to support and love skateboarding to the fullest. for sean and skate culture Jon
  8. additions Forgot to mention that tv_tanned and spell checker are also highlighting my point and i fully support what they are saying. Jon
  9. Defence Against Skateboarding The discussion so far between Ross and Lester Burnham has made me need to post a reply to this topic, but before i do i would like to say that although i did not know sean that well he has always seemed to be a decent guy the few times ive been around him and my deepest sympathies go out to his family and friends, this isnt only a tragedy for those closest to him but a horrific incident that affects all of us on some level. rest in peace In relation to skateboardings part to play in this tragedy i just want to echo what Ross said and hope that the council and newspapers do not spin this into an anti skateboarding campaign and begin to bring in all manner of bans and fines, it has happened in far too many citys already. In response to Lester Burnhams post i dont think you have been on top of the car park because there is no way that anyone could honestly say that the car park is unsafe for skateboarders since it is surrounded by approximtely 4 foot high walls right round the perimeter and the fact that all good ledges and manual blocks are in the centre of the car parks top floor. I do agree that we are lucky to have gone this long without an accident like this happening but you must admit that along the edge of those walls you would have some sort of other barrier wouldnt you, with a fall thats great you would want maximum protection to users of the car park, skateboarders included. This also, as said by others, does highlight the dire need for a decent skate/teenagers facility in Aberdeen and unfortunatly this is what had to happen before the council would realise this. One question i ask is what would the reports be saying if this tragedy had happened on any other night? Skateboarding has given me and most of you guys some of the happiest and most amazing memories of our lives and some of the best friends we could ever hope for, including sean. I just dont want to see something so right in the world dishonoured in this way. for sean and skate culture Jon

  12. Hullo all. This is probably a long shot but i was wondering if anyone had heard of a band from Bristol called "Absent Logic". I saw them when i was down in Birmingham with ClearTone at the showcase gig and i was totally loving their stuff. I've heard they have a website but i just can' find it anywhere. They have members from another band called Grebo in them and they play heavy punk. If anyone has any info about them ill be there "speacial" friend for life. Rock 'n' F'in Roll
