  2. THE LEMON TREE PRESENTS... SATURDAY 5TH NOVEMBER @ THE LEMON TREE THE SMITHS INDEED 7.30PM 13.50 TICKETS: THE LEMON TREE LOUNGE : Productions : The Smiths Indeed If, in the autumn of 1982, you were a pair of budding young songwriters and performers about to unleash a series of wounding pop songs about sexual attraction and solitude upon an unsuspecting Britain and were surrounded by bands with names like Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, Ed Banger & The Nosebleeds and Slaughter and the Dogs, is it a surprise that your retort would be a name such as The Smiths? Between October 1982, when The Smiths performed their first gig supporting Blue Rondo A La Turk at the Ritz in Manchester, and the release of their seminal album The Queen is Dead in June 1986, that same pair of songwriters, Morrissey and Marr, in conjunction with Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce, had written, recorded and performed a series of brilliantly illuminating pop songs that gave hope to a generation struggling to guide its way through the morass of a grey, turgid Britain blighted by the Falklands war, the Miners strike and Margaret Thatcher. To celebrate the 25th anniversary since release of The Queen is Dead the album will be performed in its entirety by The Smiths Indeed, who reproduce with uncanny accuracy, the energy and the pomp and ceremony of The Smiths during this period of the Eighties. The Smiths Indeed have been performing since 2005 and developed a rapturous following of their own amongst the notoriously hard to please hardcore Smiths fans both old and new. Due to an increasing demand for their incredible ability to reproduce the atmosphere of a Smiths show, The Smiths Indeed will be moving their performance into larger venues, enabling them to incorporate a more sophisticated concert containing state of the art lighting and video content without losing the feel of a 1980s gig. "The Smiths Indeed are a brilliant tribute to The Smiths" i-D Magazine Customers please note that standing shows in The Lemon Tree Lounge are strictly for over 14s; those aged under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. 3. DF CONCERTS PRESENT WEDNESDAY 9TH NOVEMBER @ THE LEMON TREE LACUNA COIL +SUPPORT 7.30PM 15.00 TICKETS:http://www.boxofficeaberdeen.com/prod-productions_details.asp?VenueID=285 &pid=3727 Lacuna Coil is an Italian gothic metal band from Milan. Formed in 1994, the group has had two name changes since being previously known as Sleep of Right and Ethereal and was inspired by the combination of gothic imagery and music. The members have been known, musically, for composing midtempo songs consisting of prominent guitar lines and contrasting dual female/male vocal harmonies to help create a melodic, detached sound. Much of the band's recent material, however, sees a heavier and more down-tuned style, featuring a more distinct bass line and a higher mixing of the guitars within the songs. The band's 2006 release, Karmacode, peaked at number 28 on the Billboard 200. Their latest release, Shallow Life, debuted at number 16 on the Billboard charts. The album marks the band diverging their sound from gothic metal to straight-forward alternative metal. As of August 2010, Lacuna Coil has sold nearly 2 million records.
  4. DF CONCERTS PRESENT.. SATURDAY 29TH OCTOBER RODDY WOOMBLE 7.30PM 18.00 TICKETS:THE LEMON TREE LOUNGE : Productions : Roddy Woomble Familiar to many thousands of music fans as the front man in the Scottish rock band Idlewild, Roddy Woomble is also a celebrated solo songwriter & performer. He follows up the release of his acclaimed 2006 solo debut My Secret is My Silence with a brand-new album of new songs. Roddy Woomble co-founded Idlewild in 1995, naming the band for the quiet haven featured in his then-favourite book, Anne of Green Gables. Given that the NME likened their early punk-fuelled sound - deftly revisited on their latest album, 2007's Make Another World - to "a flight of stairs falling down a flight of stairs", the quiet haven part was initially somewhat ironic, but gradually came closer as Idlewild meanwhile progressed through sweeping melodic rock to rootsy, melodic sparseness. Extending that softer lyrical vein of Roddy's songwriting, 2006 saw his first solo release, My Secret Is My Silence, winning rave reviews across both the rock and folk press. He was also a key instigator behind the acclaimed 2007 album Ballads of the Book, bringing together leading Scottish poets and musicians to collaborate on new songs. Roddy went on to record and release the album Before the Ruin with Kris Drever and John McCusker in 2008, which they toured extensively around the UK to much praise. The new album, recorded on the isle of Mull and produced by John McCusker will be released in the spring of 2011. As well as songs from the new album, the set will feature tunes from My Secret is My Silence, Before the Ruin alongside several Idlewild numbers. Praise for My Secret is My Silence "A stunning piece of work" 5/5 - The Sunday Times "Tender and epic, enormous yet touching" BBC Music Website: Roddy Woomble | The Impossible Song & Other Songs
  5. THE LEMON TREE PRESENTS.. SUNDAY 13TH NOVEMBER LLOYD COLE 7.30PM 17.50 TICKETS:THE LEMON TREE LOUNGE : Productions : Lloyd Cole After about a year promoting Broken Record and touring with the Small Ensemble, Lloyd Cole is taking a break and playing some solo acoustic shows. Lloyd is taking the songs he's working on towards his next album on tour and hoping to complete a bunch of them and try them out on the audience. He's also planning to play mostly songs he didn't play with the Small Ensemble. Website: http://www.lloydcole.com
  6. THE LEMON TREE PRESENTS... SUNDAY 9TH OCTOBER JAMES VINCENT McMORROW 8.00PM 13.00 TICKETS: THE LEMON TREE LOUNGE : Productions : James Vincent McMorrow Currently playing live for James Vincent McMorrow is a hushed and reverential affair, each show met with pin drop silence as people follow every word, every syllable. It will not always be this way though, as James dreams of a much grander affair in the near future. I do want the music to be played how it is on the record, I dream in vivid Technicolor when it comes to my songs, not just black and white. I hear it with drums and horns and accordions and banjos and anything else that can be hit or strummed! Playing on my own right now is beautiful because it allows me to connect on a very primitive level, but Id like to be in a place soon where I can be surrounded with friends on stage to share this with me. Whatever that near future might hold, you get the strongest sense that there are some truly wondrous things to come for this man. Music to me is this fluid notion, Ive captured one element of it with this album, but there are endless others out there to be sung and written about. Website: James Vincent McMorrow
  7. THE LEMON TREE PRESENTS... MONDAY 12TH SEPTEMBER HAYSEED DIXIE 7.30PM 15.00 TICKETS: THE LEMON TREE LOUNGE : Productions : Hayseed Dixie From the fertile valley of Deer Lick Holler in Appalachia, comes a sound that is old yet new. A band of acoustic musicians isolated from cultural and musical influence were gifted some old black vinyl records and set about interpreting this strange new music in their own mountain/bluegrass style. The black records were, as fate would have it, AC/DC. And as time progressed so the boys did too, covering Motorhead, Zeppelin, Sabbath and just about every other gonzo rock band ever born. Over to singer, guitarist and fiddle player Scotch Barley, "There's 4 key elements in any good mountain song - drinking, cheating, killing and going to hell. I guess that ain't so different to rock, what says you?" Highly recommended show!

  9. THE LEMON TREE PRESENTS... THURSDAY 22ND SEPTEMBER EMMY THE GREAT 8.00PM 12.50 TICKETS: THE LEMON TREE LOUNGE : Productions : Emmy the Great Emmy the Great showcases tracks from her new album, Virtue. Virtue was made in London and Sussex in collaboration with Euan Hinshelwood. Euan came up with the guitar palette, strange, ambient, twisted and atmospheric, while Emmy wrote backing vocals for different voices hysterical women, nuns and sirens, who she voiced herself. The ghosts of the Cocteau Twins and Suzanne Vega are here, as well as the stories of Margaret Atwood and Angela Carter, and the writing of cultural theorists like Marina Warner. Emmy wanted a cast for this album, to lift up the world she was trying to conjure, and kept albums in mind that have similar ambitions Neutral Milk Hotels In The Aeroplane Over The Sea; Janelle Monaes The Archandroid. While making it, she listened to girly pop like The Bangles, tempered with religious choirs, folk from the South Pacific, while Euan became obsessed with post-punk and Bulgarian choirs. They even spent a night Googling Enya. Gareth Jones known for his work with These New Puritans, Depeche Mode and Grizzly Bear was their producer. He indulged their romanticism, but understood their wish to make the music sound precise, rather than precious. Emmy also knew she had to let go, and this was the time to do it to confront things without fear, to throw her head high, say what she thought, things she couldnt say to herself without music. Its this record, she says, thats made her feel like a person.
  10. GIG CARTEL PRESENTS... 11. THE LEMON TREE PRESENTS... FRIDAY 30TH DECEMBER APB +SUPPORT 7.30PM 8.00 TICKETS:THE LEMON TREE LOUNGE : Productions : APB One of the best bands to emerge from the North-east, punk trio APB are going back to their roots to close a highly-successful year at Aberdeens Lemon Tree Lounge with a gig on Friday, December 30. After a lengthy break, the post-punk/funk pioneers are back with a new seven-track mini-LP on Oatcake Records. The original APB trio George Cheyne (on drums), Glenn Roberts (guitar) and Iain Slater (bass and vocals) emerged on the burgeoning independent music scene back in 1979 after taking inspiration from the punk do-it-yourself ethic and acquired legendary status both here and in the USA. They released a series of funky, sparse and angular singles throughout the early 80s earning several John Peel and Radio 1 sessions. Their records were picked up by club and college radio DJs in the US, particularly in the New York Tri-State area, earning the band a large cult following. More US tours followed expanding the audience further, earning the band support slots with James Brown and The Clash, their own legendary headline shows at The Ritz and a number one record on the Billboard dance chart. The 1985 singles collection Something to Believe In cemented their appeal. APB eventually disbanded in 1990 and all went on to pursue other projects but the 25th anniversary of the release of Something To Believe In led to more US gigs and the bands return to the studio to record a new album Three. In addition, Iain, who had relocated to Hastings, has brought in Hastings-based musician/DJ Del Guapo to expand the bands sound. Tickets for the December 30 Lemon Tree Lounge gig are available online at Aberdeen - Find Theatre tickets, dates and venues schedules, by phone at 01224 641122 and at Aberdeen Box Office at the Music Hall, His Majestys Theatre and The Lemon Tree. More information on APBs new seven-track mini-LP is available at Welcome to Oatcake Records! and on the band at apb from Scotland
  12. THE LEMON TREE PRESENTS.. SATURDAY 15TH OCTOBER BILL WELLS + AIDAN MOFFAT 7.30PM 10.00 TICKETS: THE LEMON TREE LOUNGE : Productions : Bill Wells & Aidan Moffat Some partnerships just work, even if it takes time. Eight years in the making, Everythings Getting Older, the debut album by Aidan Moffat and Bill Wells, is a special thing, full of gorgeous, jazz-inflected love songs fleshed out with a mixture of spoken word pieces and vocals delivered in Aidan's distinctive rhotic singing voice. Wells is the Scottish multi-instrumentalist, composer, leader of the Bill Wells Octet and collaborator with The Pastels, Isobel Campbell, Future Pilot AKA and many more. Moffat is a man of many projects, whether his solo material released under his full name Aidan John Moffat, his band Aidan Moffat & the Best-Ofs or, in a former life, his experimental work as L Pierre, Lucky Pierre and his long history as one half of iconic Scots duo Arab Strap. The pair first met back in Moffats Arab Strap days in predictably a pub, when Aidan and bandmate Malcolm Middleton invited Bill to play piano on their Monday At The Hug & Pint album. Its then that the duo first started work on Everythings Getting Older, recording first single, (If You) Keep Me In Your Heart, in 2003. Having resolved to make an album, it was to be a long time in the making. The songs they came up with over that considerable period of time began taking on a theme: aging, and within it freedom, fatherhood and responsibility. Written by bouncing files back and forth, with some ideas fleshed out at the East Kilbride Arts Centre, the album was recorded at Chem 19 in Blantyre and Ca Va in Glasgow.

The trios tectonic throbs of guitar, drum and bass have been making in-roads into the Scottish music scene over the last six months. Tipped by Scotsman Radar as the Act to Watch in 2011, receiving a nomination for Best Live Act at this years Scottish Alternative Music Awards and winning a lucrative slot at this years T Break Stage at T in the Park, Lady North have fast gained the reputation of intriguing and unpredictable purveyors of pulsing instrumental rock. Led by Scott Bullens android guitar, Jamie Steels gyrating basslines and Paul Bannons apoplectic percussion, the three tear apart convention, combining math with wider strains of funk, reggae and prog. They create a seething, stomach acid-frothing ogre of sound that must not be missed. No matter who you are, you need to check this band out live. What the press think: quite probably the city's (Edinburgh) most exciting live band Radar Scotsman Every once in a while you hear a band who completely dispense with all the 4/4 bullshit youve become accustomed to and blow your fucking mind. Glasgow Podcart mathematic riff magicians The Skinny PAWS are a punk rock band that live in Glasgow with two thirds of it's members hailing from Inverness and Edinburgh. They bash out infectious, lo-fi garage pop-rock, that can shift from cute melancholia to an unnerving territorial roar. Their live show blends the dynamics of that of a kitten and that of a grizzly bear. Alternative pop songs in kittenBEARkitten structure. Strong holders of punk rock ethic, PAWS have recorded all their material to date from home and have released a single with Wise Blood Industries, a set of limited run cassette compilations aswell as their recent debut "Mermaid E.P" which was mastered by Bob Weston of Shellac. Having only been a band for little over a year, PAWS have gigged relentlessly within the UK opening for bands that share their ethic such as No Age, Wavves, Dum Dum Girls, YUCK!, Male Bonding and Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti to name a few. BBC Radio 1 also invited the band to play a live session in early 2011 as did BBC 6 Music back in August 2010. Looking to start work on their debut full length record shortly after Summer, 2011 is shaping up to be a very exciting time for these three kittens. What the press think: Loud, melodic, distorted, catchy, triumphant, reckless: Radar Scotsman Combining Dinosaur Jr-esque melodic noisemongery with colourful imagery, restless energy and an ear for a good hook The List rather awesome Glasgow face-melters Song, by Toad
