i second the langford photography books. i'd also recommend 'the photo book' too. not so much tutorial but a good source of inspiration. it's an a-z of amazing photographers with notes and explanations behind each photograph. at first i thought it looked kind of cheesy, but it's actually pretty concise. i think waterstones sell it for around 6.
