  2. Marvin Gaye, The Supremes, The Temptations and the great Smokey Robinson and the Miracles oh yes...I Second That Emotion I got a Smokey Robinson compilation (The Tracks of My Tears) a few years back which features most of the Motown great artists, but Smokey ...what a voice and a songwriter! And don't forget the fabulous The Funk Brothers studio band were immense with the great James Jamerson. YouTube - James Jamerson Then of course there's Stax. 60s and early 70s soul is class. There's a program on BBC2 tonight about 11 on the Detroit scene (Motown to the Stooges).
  3. I think my first was The Michael Schenker Group - "MSG" purchased from Music Matters in Buckie. Still have it too and it features Chris Glen from SAHB but not my taste now, a bit thin and basically average
  4. I would say Elbow should get it but I think it'll be Last Shadow Puppets as they seem to be the darlings of the music media at the mo.
  5. Nah Lennon would take them all, he was supposed to be handy with his fists.
  6. "It breaks my heart that he wasn't one of the Traveling Wilburys Traveling Wilburys (he would have been a nice foil for George Harrison's cheesy pap tendencies, and he knew Dylan better than any of those guys)" Bullshit on both counts. OK he's a good guitar player but not to my tastes. I never liked Dire Straits but always felt they had an appropriate name.
  7. A big YES fae me too. So what's the gen?
  8. I've got the Batman theme on 7" picture disc and The Dickies - Banana Splits Theme on Yellow Vinyl Tat:gringo:
  9. Some piccies of the fab show: Highland Ultimate Bands List :: Local bands from Moray and the Highlands!
  10. Tonights the night! Chris Gorman Glasgow based Chris Gorman tops the bill at the acoustic night with a piano and vocal set. Influenced by the likes of Jeff Buckley, Tom McRae, Radiohead and Aerogramme, Chris has an amazing voice and his songs are fresh with melodies and lyrics that will stay with you for a long time. Chris has supported the likes of Regina Spektor and Craig B from Aerogramme plus he has also done development work with Parlophone Records. Chris has recently put together a band and filmed a video for his superb song Teargas, which can be seen on his website. His next project will be finishing and promoting his new 6 track EP which is due to be released in the summer. Chris has played a few gigs in the Highlands but although his girlfriend is from Elgin this will be his first trip to Moray and hes looking forward to the experience. MySpace.com - Gorman - Glasgow, UK - Alternative / Acoustic - www.myspace.com/gormanband -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Miss Becca Miss Becca is a singer-songwriter from Buckie with a wide range of influences from the likes of James Taylor and Bob Dylan through to Paolo Nutini, The Kooks and most recently Amy Macdonald. As well as gigging regularly all over Scotland, last year she performed a live session on BBC Radio Scotlands Highland Caf show and more recently, a session and interview for Red TV (sky channel 186). She also narrowly missed out on a support slot with Amy MacDonald at the latest Rock Against Racism gig, after being one of five short-listed finalists. Currently signed to indie label Spook Records, debut album Red She Said and single Ill Wait for You have recently been released on all major download sites. MySpace.com - Miss Becca - St Andrews / Buckie, UK - Acoustic - www.myspace.com/missbeccamusic -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chris Grant 22 year old singer songwriter Chris Grant is an experienced performer and a regular around the sessions in Moray including the odd busking session. Chris is a prolific songwriter and has written and recorded several self financed albums including Attention!. After a journey round the UK, Chris has returned to Moray and hosts and plays at the Open Mic night at Flanagans each Sunday. His songs play on personal, topical and local issues with a tongue in cheek humour which are delivered with his distinctive strong vocals. http://www.bebo.com/ChrisGrantMusic -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Nick Bruce Nick Bruce is a 25-year-old multi instrumentalist singer songwriter with influences including Prince, Springsteen, The Cure, Pink Floyd, U2, The Smiths and Morrissey. Originally from Buckie, Nick is currently based Inverness where hes studying acting. Although self sufficient, Nick plans to put a band together and develop his performance and writing and get out gigging regularly. http://www.bebo.com/nickjohnbruce -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CALLmeBOB CALLmeBOB are a lively 3 piece pUNK/emo Speyside based band led by former Blue Gum Ears bassist AJ. After a few acoustic jams Scampi and AJ decided to recruit a drummer. Jock was that man. A long spell of writing and jamming followed and then CALLmeBOB were ready to gig. Mixing their influences together they create a sound and image that they, and hopefully the gig going public, appreciate. Using vocal harmonies to their full effect with two lead vocals interacting throughout their songs backed up by metal drumming, ska/pUNK bass and heavy/sweet earthy guitar. The band is planning to record their debut album in the summer and start playing Aberdeen and beyond. MySpace.com - CALLmeBOB - Emo / Punk / Alternative - www.myspace.com/thebandcallmebob -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Special Edition The Special Edition are a 4-piece rock 'n' roll band from Elgin and surrounding areas with influences including Black Rebel Motorcycle, Kings of Leon and Oasis. 12. I love ZZ Top but lost interest after Eliminator when they went from "little ol band from Texas" to "big US band running on reputation". Here's one or two of my favs Fool For Your Stockings and Jesus Just Left Chicago They groove:gringo:
  13. HUBL Acoustic Gig - Red Shoes 14th June - Talent required! Highland Ultimate Band List (HUBL), the Moray based music website is teaming up with Red Shoes Theatre Company in Elgin for an acoustic showcase on Saturday the 14th June. HUBL the free online resource for use by the music fans and musicians of Moray and the Highlands was created by Chris Thornton of Colourjam in 2003. The interactive website includes Band Profiles, Gig Listings, MP3 Chart, Forum and Reviews. HUBL is designed to support and promote the music community and has organised gigs and also released the HUBL CD to showcase the talent in the area. At present HUBL has 166 members and features a very diverse range of artists. This is reflected in the top 3 of March's MP3 chart, which was topped by cosmic sonic groove merchants The Phoenix Band with "Your build like a car oh yeah" followed by rock/metal band Mind Gone Blind and the experimental soundscapes of Achenar. This is the first HUBL event of 2008 and they are looking for solo performers and bands with original material to fill the night. Any artist interested should email a MP3, biography and contact details to email@hubl.co.uk. Closing date for entries is April 30th and the line up will be announced shortly after. This is an excellent opportunity to play a great wee venue, which reeks of musical history including legendary performances by The Beatles, The Who, The Pink Floyd and Cream. Since reopening The Red Shoes Theatre Company has brought a much needed live venue to Elgin and as well as theatre and gigs has recently started acoustic evenings every Friday 5pm til 7pm at their Cafe Rouge. http://www.hubl.co.uk http://www.myspace.com/redshoestheatre
  14. That's generally why stuff is rare, it sold poorly and a lot of it coz it's shite
  15. I've got a few bits n pieces including: Pallas - "Reds Under Your Beds" EP, plus the Arrive Alive Cassette and singles and indeed pretty much everything up to and including The Wedge Rolling Stones - She Was Hot 12" White label Metallica - Creeping Death / Am I Evil / Blitzkrieg10" Gold Vinyl Anniversary Edition ...and a load of Beatles stuff
  16. Well that's also the worst lyrics I have ever seen...contrived and soooo shite. Unnaceptable on every level
  17. That's a new one to me but you obviously know your stuff...cheers. And Nobody's Fault But Mine...don't get me started on Led Zeppelin and their "songwriting" credits.
  18. I go with the above... was average bluesman, disappeared, practiced a lot, came back made a reputation and some recordings then killed by jealous husband/lover. Die young, live forever...standard rock path to icon and mythology. There's a character in the wonderful film O Brother Where Art Thou that's based on him ...Tommy Johnson, even goes to the Crossroads.
  19. As above, pompous overblown and tasteless but they had a few ace songs like You're My Best Friend, Under Pressure and Seven Seas of Rye. But I do find their morals loose and selective. They played Sun City during the apartheid years in South Africa, so took their pieces of white man's silver (along with a few others including Rod Stewart)...then they played Live Aid for the poor Africans and gave their career a massive boost.
  20. I wouldn't include that as it's meant to be that way, a social commentary (like Fiddle About by The Who), whereas the rest are examples of lyrics that were perfectly acceptable in their day (apart from WASP who just went for shock value).
  21. Is that not a song about his daughter? Apart from that the man is MOR personified.
  22. What about W.A.S.P and the glorious atrocity that is Animal (F***like a beast)? Ah heavy metal that subtle and thoughtful genre... I got pictures of naked ladies Lying on their beds I whiff that smell and sweet convulsion Starts a-Swelling inside my head I'm making artificial lovers for free I start to howl I'm in heat I moan and growl and the hunt drives me crazy I f*** like a Beast I come round, round i come feel your love Tie you down, down i come steal your love I come round, round i come feel your love Tie you down, down i come steal your love I'm on the prowl and i watch you closely I lie waiting for you I'm the wolf with the sheepsskins clothing I lick my chops and your tasting good I do whatever i want to, to ya I'll nail your ass to the sheets A pelvic thrust and the sweat starts to sting ya I f*** like a beast I come round, round i come feel your love Tie you down, down i come steal your love I come round, round i come feel your love Tie you down, down i come steal your love Come ride, savage seduction Ride, ride, ride
  23. That song gives me flashbacks to OMD (Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark) of Enola Gay fame, it's mainly the guys vocals.
  24. Yes, he was in Squeeze who were quite good at the time.
