SM7 is cracking man. I love the fact that you don't need a vocal booth and that it can be both hand-held or mic-stand-held. Sounds good without eq as well. Radial J48 and X-amp for DI and re-amping?

I'm afraid a pet hate of mine is people who just plug into my cab after I've finished soundchecking, assuming they can use it without so much as asking (not saying you do that like). And then not even bother to say thanks afterwards either. Yeah man it's cool, you can just use a grands worth of gear without so much as needing to say thanks. Cunt.

there is a difference between overdrive and distortion - Keeno was talking about overdrive pedals.

Actually using an overdrive pedal (eg a tubescreamer) with the gain backed off should tighten up your sound, as it compresses the bass a little harder an adds a bit more in the upper mid-range. Although probably a lot of the people you are referring to use ass-cabbage amps with the bass and gain maxed out, and with crap guitars that are played poorly and tuned down low to disguise the fact that the riffs are shit... and that is why it sounds muddy. But the main reason for using an overdrive pedal in front of the amp's distortion is to make it LESS muddy. I've used a maxon OD808 as well as valve distortion for years.

Sounds good man... did you get your 421 for cheap? Those things are wicked but very pricey for essentially a slightly different SM57! I'd highly recommend Massey Tapehead plug-in for vocals (and other things). High-end plug-ins for Pro Tools Awesome plug-in and super cheap. The Massey L2007 limiter and CT4 compressor is also very highly rated. You can demo them all for free, but you'll want to buy them in the end because they are very good but the fact that you can't use them in bypass mode on the demo versions is annoying (and fair enough seeing they are free!)

Don't really understand the point in 8 string guitars really. Just take a 7 string and tune it down. Assuming you want to tune ridiculously low (let's say F standard, which is) your high E string is still going to be an Bb, which isn't really that low. And I'm yet to see or hear ANYONE play super-low tuned djent music do anything constructive with the high strings at all, never mind the high strings beyond the 18th fret.

Even after playing hundreds of gigs I still get a little nervous before them, no matter how many people there are. Haven't played live since september 09 which must be the longest time without a gig in 7 or 8 years.
