  1. IMO - this band dont have good enough songs or anything about them to be classed as a 'breath of fresh air' or to be hyped up at all - thats leaving yourself open to all the criticism received (most of which is warranted & fair). They obviously have styled themselves on Seargant / the Bluetones etc. but if thats what they are into - fair enough... However as noted - they look young, so have plenty of time to get a haircut, write something decent and be themselves....
  2. As soon as you put Lady Mercedes as headliners, that gaurantees a lack of interest...are they still peddling the Guns & Roses fronted by Mick Jaggers less articulate little brother routine?
  3. listings? havent been in the loop for a while, in fact havent even been to the tunnels yet. so could anyone (chilli?) drop some knowledge of any upcoming ultra hip leftfield musical alumni that are soon to be gracing the aforementioned venue ? planning on lifting the self imposed hermit status and getting to a few gigs in the next couple of months....
  4. Dont get me wrong, I do like the record and have listened to it a fair bit (you cant really not like it, its stacked with classic stuff) however I do think its a bit 'lazy' compared to Madlibs other stuff. What I mean is that I think he basically just made up a reggae mixtape (albeit one with impeccable taste) for his own listening pleasure as opposed to hacking up the tracks or recording new versions like he did with the Blue note stuff. It did come out on antidote though so you dont really know if it really was meant for general release - all the stuff Peanutbutter Wolf has put out by Madlib has been high quality - especially like 'the ox' which is another Madlib invazion and is on the Jukebox 45s thing. Liked your review though, I agree with the stuff about the sound effects..Have you done any more? I think we've got quite similar taste....although I'm not a big Fall fan.
  5. good shout, clouddead is weird psychadelic hip hop nursery rhyme type shit and great. I think the C.D. version now comes with a bonus disc which has the B.O.C. remix of dead dogs 2 which is also really good. (also check their 1st album which is similar weirdness all recorded on an 8 track and sounds like it too) madvillain is by MF Doom & Madlib and is one of the best hip hop albums to come out this year - great samples by Madlib & dope lyrics by Doom. In fact check out any of Madlibs joints - i think you would be into his 'Yesterdays New Quintet' stuff they have done a couple of L.P.s which are Axelrod type jazz stuff (all played by Madlib) then cut up and fed through his sampler - good stuff if you dig the space jazz. he also did an album in which he cut up a load of Blue Note stuff which is worth getting. His other stuff includes : Quasimoto - 'the unseen' - which is features Madlib as his alter ego Lord Quas : speeded up rapping over wired loops and beats. Jaylib - 'champion sound' - which is another hip hop collab with Jaydee.. where Madlib raps over Jaydees digital type beats and Jaydee raps over Madlibs more sample based stuff. 'Blunted in the Bomb Shelter' which is a reggae mix set and although has some really great stuff by King Tubby and the likes is quite a rough mix and nothing special. hope this helps
  6. finger on the pause button.... some good picks in the last posts, heres mine... an evolving mix recorded to minidisk for listening to whilst living. I always try to keep them varied and delete tracks that I'm bored of (the main advantage of minidisk over tape) and put on new stuff whenever.... note - edits are tracks that have been messed with i.e. added beats, looped bits or generally altered to segue into the next track. there are also random 'spoken word' samples from films etc. dropped in at random places throughout... pharoahe monch - simon says fourtet - everything is alright james brown - the payback (edit) gangstarr - code of the streets squarepusher - I wish i could talk the lemonheads - If i could talk i'd tell you ultramagnetic mcs - break north de la soul - jennifer told me the ramones - I wanna be sedated the jesus and marychain - darklands (edit) prefuse 73 - the end of biters art blakey - ping pong captain beefheart - electricity autechre - piezo rolling stones - gimme shelter the beatles - helter skelter / revolution no.9 (edit) the headhunters - god made me funky N.E.R.D. - lapdance the monkees - mary mary (edit) beastie boys - to all the girls charizma - devotion johnny cash - I walk the line glenn campbell - I guess I'm dumb black sabbath - paranoid NWA - straight outta compton (extended mix) the stooges - gimme danger (edit) madvillain - accordian the upsetters - sipreano ride - today dizzee rascal - fix up look sharp cornelius - star fruits surf rider beach boys - feel flows El - P - deep space 9mm cannibal ox - b boys alpha jimi hendrix - purple haze (edit) manitoba feat. koushik - hendrix with KO jaylib - champion sound dennis brown - black magic woman the byrds - i know my rider mono forms - you give me micro cuts genius/gza - liquid swords flying burrito brothers - sin city dusty springfield - son of a preacher man (edit) cypress hill - hits from the bong lee dorsey - get out my life woman (edit) dillinger - flat foot hustlin' medaphoar - ox (edit) yesterdays new quintet - lifes angles nigo - march of the general MBV - only shallow BOC - happy cycling james carr - the dark end of the street
  7. what is DTMF ? I thought Autechre invented the BOC sound on Amber anyway?...and that was out in '94. BOC did well to push basically the same sound (albeit more melodic / accessible) to a bigger/ wider audience inc. indie kids, hipsters etc. so all credit to them... orange!
  8. roland are solid for most stuff (cant be beat for drum machines) but, emu make the dopest samplers bar none...rockin' the SP & the Emax.... gretsch for drums & guitars...classic hohner for melodica...
  9. Prince Pauls set was so nice on Sunday! History of (real) Hip Hop in an hour..rockin' the joint... Shame you couldn't get Madlib/Jaylib up as well that would have made for an even better night...
  10. doyne, doyne, doyne, doyne Anything off Surfs Up (except Student Demonstration Time) is magic 'Till I Die and Feel Flows are both genius. Also have a soft spot for Our Prayer and Forever which I think are on 20/20. So much good output though - The Trader and Funky Pretty on Holland are also great. Although Brian was the visionary Carl & Dennis did some brilliant stuff and are often overlooked....
  11. check - http:\\www.thechymes.com
  12. what kind of stuff do you do? Do you do stuff on your own? Ive read some good things about hookers green and the track I heard on the 'IsthisMusic?' free C.D. was really good....
  13. we have been described as... 'pushing together the feel of My Bloody Valentine with the Byrds and chucking a few samples into the mix as well as a good portion of electronics' and 'Theres elements of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, in the drawn out scuzzy feedback. Firm nods to the melodic, indie anthemry of Vapour Trail era Ride. The thumping synth beats and dance-adelic coolness of DJ Shadow and Tortoise. And cunning nods in the direction of Four Tet and Pink Floyd. Theres something slightly tongue in cheek about it all, yet theres also a hint that it was recorded with each member of the band wearing an icy glare etched firmly across their faces. Its dark and mysterious, yet surprisingly danceable in places. Its fast. Its slow. Its like The Matrix and Easy Rider all mixed up.' so that pretty much sums it up........
  14. Aye, I am starting to think that..... will have to mangle the sample into something unrecognisible.
  15. dont get one of those fucking hideous heavy metal guitars pictured above...... get a danelectro DC59 in cadillac black.....light, any tone you want, lipstick pickups, and cool as fuck.... as used by beck, cornelius and jimmy page....
  16. the jazzer? aye, george benson the jazz guitarist? i didnt realise he was still touring.... the reason I asked is that I have just sampled a string loop off one of his old records (cant remember the name) and I thought it would be pretty obscure......then I saw his name in your listening box.....
  17. awaiting backlash... fair enough, generally dont like women in bands though - make sure your female is of the attractive variety though as nobody digs fat/ugly chicks in bands...mama cass..eugh did like belinda in MBV though, and early blondie..., and the bangles, and transvision vamp and julie driscoll, and the honeys and..... shit - retract my first statement.
  18. what george benson stuff are you listening to?
