sorry, this is perhaps not the most useful post, but just wanted to say if you start looking on ebay, keep an eye out for some of the m-audio entry range monitor pairs too, they are no bad. i got a pair of tannoy reveals second hand last year, and it was one of the best things i've done, especially so if you are moving from something like working with headphones all the time, or using a normal hi-fi and/or computer speakers. i moved from using a fairly ok hi-fi with what i thought were not bad speakers. i couldn't believe the difference when i started using the monitors. it has the additional bonus that existing music you have sounds amazing through them too. hope you find something suitable soon.

parameter automation has been available since near the start of VST support in linux. for example say i have a bus with two signal inputs (e.g. stereo). i could put amplitube vst in the signal chain, pre or post mixer. using automation i can change all the paremeters such as gain, effects, amp models, speaker cab models, etc etc. i haven't experimented with side chaining yet, though my mate sent me a couple of free sidechaining vsts the other day for me to try. i know of people doing it already on linux though. at the end of the day if you have the vst, and you have the means to setup the signals (e.g. using the routing in the multitrack recorder ardour, or a sound server manager e.g. qjackctl) then you can route things in any way you want, to a nearly limitless degree. if you are interested, check out some of the applications on Applications using JACK | JACK

sorry, should have clarified. they can appear in any position in the signal chain (both VST and VSTi), with any amount of pre or post effects. well, i'm interested to know why you think it isn't up to the job, or what you tried to do that you found you couldn't, but at the end of the day it's like you say - right tools for the job. i choose to use linux for audio because it suits my way of working. and of course i could do almost everything i do in linux audio-wise in windows - it's just that i don't have to, so why bother. i defy anyone to consistently do something purely for evangelical reasons - it just doesn't work!

if you want a linux environment that mimics your windows environment, then that's not going to happen. i can run VSTs and VSTi's standalone, for example i can use absynth, akoustik piano, drums from hell all with no problem. most of the features you will find (as well as a lot more) in common windows production suites are also available in linux software, the difference being in linux they are not all integrated into a single application. the way of working is undoubtedly different from how most use a windows audio system. for example there's no application like Live in linux, though you could probably run it via Wine. it is a serious platform for audio production however. the main HD recorder program in linux has been integrated into hardware solutions: Ardour at NAB 2006 | ardour that's not to qualify all linux audio production tools as being commercial grade necessarily; it maybe does indicate that people are producing professional and commercial music on linux already though.

which i guess makes you an example of FUD I'm guessing you tried Linux and didn't like it. Fair play!

looking at the specs for your soundcard it looks like it has 2 unbalanced 1/4" jack inputs. the mixer looks as if it does balanced inputs, but this is kind of irrelevant as your soundcard inputs are unbalanced. so, you could really just use two guitar leads to connect each of the mix (L an R) outputs from the desk to each of the 1/4" input sockets from the soundcard. I'm assuming you are wanting to run the mixing desk as an input to the soundcard and not the other way around?

i have an old clone theory pedal from years and years ago that runs off mains electricity. i suppose it must have the transformer on the inside. it has some beautiful sounding flange and chorus, never did have much luck in deciphering the vib-vib position on the pedal, though maybe they have improved it these days. the deep chorus effects are very nice and smooth though. i would recommend the pedal, though i don't know how much it costs these days. edit: regarding the noise issue, from what i remember it's quite quiet on clean guitar, though if you have lots of gain/drive on and you mute the strings, then it can be a bit noisy. though, if you have a noise gate (e.g. playing through a pod) this is somewhat mitigated.

i saw aka the fox a few times and each time i said to myself and others, i wish they had a drummer. then i saw them with a drummer and wished instead that they didn't have one. no sleight on the drummer, it's just that the drum machine was a very characteristic part of their sound. they're kind of brassy without horns, it's good.

it depends how 'giving' the lady friend is feeling it was amazing the number of people that commented on the jacket, one guy actually offered to buy it on the night but the girlfriend was having none of it i still have the glasses though, may give them a whirl for the event of the year!

i can't quite put into words how excited i am about seeing gatechien again i missed them first time at snafu or wherever it was and regretted it, then saw them at the tunnels and was totally blown away. agree with the comment about laurent being a spectacular bass player, not just for technical skill but for the brash charisma too not missing this gig for any amount of money
