  1. It's 1st feb.. plenty time for recovery of livers and overdrafts
  2. Interestingly this announcement coincides with the new lemon tree brochure coming out tomorrow?....
  3. Laura Veirs 2004 Americana-driven Carbon Glacier into 2006s Year of Meteors gave us songs wrapped-up in subtle but distinctive art-pop grooves, not too far from the world of The Sea And Cake and Yo La Tengo, with wistfully romantic tunes that break into modestly explosive choruses. Introducing a more isolated songwriting style, augmented by a homespun assortment of crackling instruments - banjo, glockenspiel, piano and vibraphonette, the songs lull you in with their immense simplicity and unerring beauty. Acclaimed singer-songwriter album of the year, pop record Saltbreakers shows Veirs has more than just poetic whimsy up her sleeve, layering intricate guitar lines around fizzing synths. Ocean Night Song invokes comparisons with Bjrks Isobel and Nina Nastasias "Dog". The single Dont Lose Yourself is gorgeous electro-pop, adding Postal Service esque glitchy drum machines to the mix. Saltbreakers sees Veirs writing folky pop tunes that are instantly lovable. Ultimately, by eschewing the careworn vulnerability so favoured by many female artists, Laura Veirs is surprisingly refreshing. Press: Her voice is fairly low-pitched and conversational, but capable of a range of emotion that prevents her from sounding flat; comparisons to Liz Phair and Suzanne Vega are well-founded. (Splendid Magazine) Veirs is routinely compared to Suzanne Vega for the dryness of her delivery and to Beth Orton for the way she melds folk rock with dance sonics. (Pitchfork) Veirs is maybe the gazillionth iteration of the quiet voice and plucked guitar, but she serves as a potent reminder how variable and compelling that combination can be. 4. haunted house party are due on around 11 with dan le sac on after that, there's tickets on the door but early arrival is recommended.. 3am yus!
  5. The sheer number of bearded dudes holding guitars onstage at any given Akron/Family event being what it is... here's some more akron blurb... Akron/Family is John Brown's body, the ghost of Tom Joad and the art-school spirit of Andy Warhol crammed into one ornate, mossy mausoleum.(Magnet) Akron/Family aren't nearly as country-blues rooted as Banhart. Their songs are clearly pop songs, albeit filtered through an expansive, multi-instrumented sensibility. They work in a more structured way than Animal Collective, without the long hallucinatory improvisations or tribal percussion sessions.(Splendid) Meander[ing] through comparatively direct Mercury Rev and Radiohead moods....[Akron/Family (self-titled)] sounds like the work of a band many freak-folk acts strive to become. (AVclub)
  6. As I said in my puntastically written (howlin rain... : / ) lemon tree email.. expect some spine-tingling, chillingly soulful and emotive performances tonight. And if you are yet to witness Adrian Crowley, make sure its in this incredible line-up. Cheers!
  7. THIS one is not so far away (tues next) so although you should be able to buy on the door, if you want to be safe then advance buying is always recommended you can now buy from one-up too. And.. Akron/Family will have the same length of set as Howlin Rain
  8. Akron/Family return to the Lemon Tree following their Triptych 06 gig with King Creosote, Adem and Kitchen Cynics. For fans of Vetiver and Devendra Banhart...Akron/Family are signed to the distinguished Young God imprint, (Devendra Banhart, Mi and L'au) and their label boss is fted Swans' commander Michael Gira - a guru with whom Akron/Family also shared a release last year, playing alongside his Angels of Light.
  9. Howlin Rain (with Ethan Miller of acclaimed Californian psychedelic rockers Comets On Fire and John Moloney aka Sunburned Hand Of The Man) make joyful free-wheelin' rock in the vein of Creedence Clearwater Revival or Boy Dylans' Pat Garret And Billy The Kid soundtrack. "We make music to beat the steering wheel of your van to or sing along with while drinking whiskey in the bathtub on a Saturday night with your dog." Also on this superb bill: Akron/Family of Brooklyn and their adventurous, imaginative take on gentle American country-folk with added unabashed electronic noise. Their deft blend of styles really shouldn't work under any circumstances, but it does and their schizoid oddness never once sounds contrived, instead fresh and exciting and pretty inspiring. "Akron/Familys fourth album in a furious two-year existence keeps the groups rickety and inexhaustible spirit roaring ahead. Its touchstones, from the Grateful Dead to Neil Young to Fairport Convention, could easily veer into ostentatious eclecticism, but since Akron/Family doesnt boast a particularly charismatic singer, the musicians all singand playwithout pretension.: Time Out Phosphorescent draw comparisons to Iron and Wine and The Beach Boys and write music which is reflective and earnest, leading to acclaim such as that which describes new album Pride as "one of the 2007's most knee-bucklingly beautiful records" Stylus Magazine http://www.howlinrain.com http://www.myspace.com/howlinrain http://www.akronfamily.com http://www.myspace.com/akak www.myspace.com/phosphorescent

  13. In February 2008, The Lemon Tree brings you Nouvelle Vague's debut to Aberdeen. The French collective's bossa-nova take on new wave and post punk classics has made them a much raved about festival highlight. "Nouvelle Vague certainly treat genre with the same casual respect as their source material-- they're unafraid to add French pop, cocktail jazz, or trip-hop overtones to their bossa nova template." Pitchforkmedia.com
