  1. Best thing would be to go see Mike at the new drum shop down Holburn St - Prosound music. They've just got in a load of Sabians I think. You can't really go wrong with any AAXs but try and get one that fits well with the others. You could take your other cymbals in to the shop to compare. Then give the 16" to me.
  2. "Dulce et decorum est, pro Drakes crescere..."
  3. this should of course read - "two marshall 16 ohm cabs you would set your marshall amp at 8 ohms...." pesky smilies... *suddenly feels out of his depth* Um.. yeah...I like quite light sticks...
  4. Quite right too, I say. CCTV footage shows your dancing to be wholly unacceptable... . . .
  5. Absolutely, if you have to you should be able to play a different kit. I once played a kit left handed at the Lemon Tree. A bit of flexibility makes life a lot easier.
  6. I don't quite understand what you expect to happen... If you're sharing a kit then I don't see how anyone can predict how the next guy wants it set up, so surely the best thing to do is leave it for him to do as he wants? You should be able to set up a kit from scratch in 10 mins, I don't see a problem with having to make your own adjustments before you play. If it's another drummer's kit I'm using I'll always ask before I move anything, and tell him what I've done after we're finished, but I'll leave him to put it back as he wants it. If it's a house kit, as long as it's left with all the necessary bits there for the next guy to set up I don't see what the problem is. If it was your own kit that he was using and you feel he abused it then you should be speaking to him about it. Getting all cross and stamping your feet about it on here doesn't do you any favours.
  7. Doesn't he though? I tried to start smoking so I could copy him and be cool, but I ended up going home with my pockets full of bottles...?(
  8. Re: What I said Oh dear...is all the smoke getting in your eyes?
  9. I find bouncers these days to be 10 times better than they were a few years ago. Like Mr C says, no training, no cameras, no control. Clubs just wanted someone huge to scare the bejeezuz out of everyone. I've seen many unlucky punters on the wrong end of a door monkey's Doc Marten, but not for a long time. Incidentally, I seem to recall a certain bouncer working in Moshulu's predecessor (Zuu?) who has apparently done rather well for himself, now running his very own little bar/music venue in Shiprow...
  10. Just find a bouncer you think would let you in, then get to work... Oh.

    Melody

Um, well, kinda, but not really... Think of the melody as a line that flows above the chords, but is anchored by notes from the chords at certain points. e.g. While the Am chord is playing, your melody doesn't have to use only A, C or E, but having one of them in there somewhere sounds good. Then when the chord changes to D7, you should try and have a D, F#, A or C in it somewhere. As long as your melody is in the same key as the whole piece you can use whatever notes best express the feeling you want. But really, if you sit and try and work out what can go where, you'll probably never get a decent melody at all. It should just flow naturally without worrying about the rules. If it sounds right, then it is right. Try coming up with a melody first, then fitting the underlying chords to it, instead of the other way round.
  13. Might be an idea to go to the Planet Boo Forum and ask them. They might know...
  14. I don't think it can do any harm... It's kind of like having an instruction manual. Knowing the theory won't necessarily make you any more creative, but it does help if you know why A minor works so well in C, or the best chord to play after a D7 or whatever. I don't see how it takes the fun out of music as long as you use it as guidelines and not rules. Any writer can have a really good story, but you can write a better book if you know about good grammar and vocabulary.
  15. Yeah I was surprised at that too. What's the deal? They must surely be a good money-spinner when the real drinkers are in? Really nice atmosphere too.except for the bouncer... Last night was great. The Staccato Sleazers are always great, I'm just waiting for Jim to decide he's too old for it so I can jump in... Drat are just bleedin amazing and deserve to be huge. Got talking to a geezer last night who'd never seen them before and he just couldn't believe that every single song was so good, not one single filler. More of the same please.
  16. It's not that hard, particularly if it's just backing vocals. Just make sure you're not tensed up, as that will affect your voice. If you're confident and relaxed about what you're playing on the drums, the singing bit is easy.
  17. Yip, that's exactly what I was thinking about. I reckon it would work, and would definitely help a lot of people. Many times I've seen a local band or heard a demo and thought just one little thing when pointed out would make them so much better. A more beneficial use of bandwidth than "I just ate my tea - No way!" or "Having flu sucks" etc. anyway...
  18. I would like see a forum giving the opportunity to post quick feedback to bands on gigs or recordings. Not whole reviews, just relevant comments. For example I've often seen posts asking "anyone at our gig last night? What did you think?" kind of questions, and thought it would be good to have a forum for this. If someone sees a band and thinks for example, they would be better if the drummer slowed down, or the singer didn't talk so much or whatever it would help everyone get better if they could be told. I'm sure everyone wants to know what people think after they've just played. I've also seen a few posters putting up links to their own mp3s asking for opinions, especially lately. Again this can only be of benefit. I kind of hoped this would happen with the 'Musician's Corner' forum, or 'Reviews and Recommendations', but maybe it needs to be separate to be used properly. You could call it 'Fishing For Compliments'...maybe not, but do you see what I mean?
  19. Usually my terminology = Hit it. Hit it harder. Hit it with both hands. Go to the bar. Who I believe plays from sheet music these days...
  20. Re: Re: how does one... Well, that was a glimpse into 'the mind of Graeme' that I could have done without...
  21. Quite. I think it's easy to get too caught up in complex theory, rather than just play something and see how it sounds. Obviously some basic theory knowledge is good, for example the circle of fifths and relative minors can really help with knowing what is likely to sound good, but a song isn't a quadratic equation...
  22. It's not a D13. Matt says it's a Gmin13 which sounds more like it. That's really getting into semantics now though. You could tie yourself in knots trying to name everything like that. Fuck it, it sounds nice.
  23. Yip, that would be a G add9, if you can play it. If the A was played down the octave on a lower string the chord would be a G add2, although it would be exactly the same notes. The crazy world of music theory... I've posted this before I'm sure, but this seems like a good time to do it again. Matt's Chord Identifier Very handy thing.
