  1. Title should be pretty obvious - left it somewhat late to buy them through the normal means, so am looking for a couple of tickets if anyone has any going spare...
  2. I think the ER-20's are pretty much the best you can get other than spending 150+ on a set of custom moulds. I have been wearing them for a few years and they are pretty good, not perfectly flat response, but light years ahead of things like the Proplugs and the other cheaper alternatives I have tried.
  3. An evening to celebrate the launch of the Hercules Moments Sampler: Vol. 1, A collection of some of Aberdeen's finest musical talent. Featuring eclusive acoustic performances from Eskimo Blonde, Right Hand Left, FiveFifteen and Only The Brave. Doors 8pm, entry free. For more information, check out Hercules Moments
  4. You should be able to get something more recent for not too much more than the 350d, the jump up to something like the 400d is well worth it for the better autofocus sensor cleaning and better screen on the back, and that is ignoring the current 450d which is still within budget and comes with a better feature set (additions like spot metering and lie view which were absent on the older models)
  5. I would have a look at the cheaper Canons, you should be able to get the 450d (which I can't really see how you would consider 'feature light') for under 500 which is a fantastic camera. Great quality, decent kit lens (the 18-55mm IS) and a great range of available lenses (any Canon EF lens - so pretty much any Canon lens from the last 20 years). I went for a 400d when I was buying (admittedly quite a while back now) and it has served me brilliantly. The Nikon d40 is a great deal, but to my eyes is ageing a bit. The main thing that put me off the lower end Nikons is the availability of lenses - you can take your pick of any of the new lenses, but things like the older primes are a lot more limited (you can mount any Nikon lens from the last 50 years, but only autofocus the newer lenses with built in motors). To most beginners this probably isn't an issue though, as all the 'standard' zoom lenses are available to fit (18-55, 55-200, 18-200, etc...) so it is only awkward people like me who find an issue. There are also the other options available like Pentax and Sony who both make fantastic cameras, just they don't really have the same system of existing lenses and accessories behind them as the big two - hopefully someone else can comment on them as my knowledge is lacking as I have had a lot more experience with Canon and Nikon
  6. And here was me thinking One Up was one of the friendliest shops I have been in...
  7. I got onto the roof of the council buildings - We went in to ask one day if it would be a possibility and caught the right person at the right time, so we were allowed up to take a few photos. It probably did help that we had a reason for wanting to get up and take pictures (beyond 'it would be cool') From what they said though, if you get in touch through the proper channels you should be able to get up at some point, just that involves the usual council bureaucracy... Some friends did also get up one of the tower blocks at the end of union street for some alternative shots on the same project - they just timed it so that they could nip in after a resident opened the door. Not too sure on the layout of all the blocks, but they definately got onto a balcony section.
  8. Boots can do it for 19 a tape - So slightly cheaper, plus no postage (but still fairly expensive).
  9. The Korg DS10 synth for the Nintendo DS A Sony A829 Walkman (as a replacement for my ailing HD1 walkman) A Marantz PM4001 poweramp (as a replacement for my current PM4400 which has been declared not worth repairing by Marantz service dept) Expensive week...
  10. The Etymotic ER20's are well worth the money, and are infinitely better sounding than most of the generic 5 earplugs (including the semi fitted ones that RnB and Bruce Millers have) The next step above them would be a set of the proper fitted ones that are moulded to your individual ears, but cost ten times the amount for the bonus of a bit of extra comfort and the option of different filter levels. If you are exposed to loud volumes for any length of time then 10 to save your hearing is frankly a bargain, yes pretty much all solutions will affect the sound in some manner, but you will easily adjust and it is more than accurate enough watching a band play, and if it is you playing you can always setup and soundcheck sans earplugs and put them on once you have the levels sorted...
  11. I use a Canon 400d, which is absolutely brilliant as an amateur SLR, and is available for fairly cheap now. The 450d is also a stunning camera and does have some noticeable improvements over the 400d (live view, larger viewfinder and spot metering to name a few) so well worth the extra pennies. Really though, You can't go wrong with any of the big names nowadays. Canon and Nikon have the benefits of a huge lens range and solid reputation for digital SLR's, which brands like Olympus, Sony and Pentax don't have the same clout behind them, but are all brilliant cameras - if you are looking at SLR's though, it is really worth researching them all as a system, not just as a camera. Have a look at the different lenses and accessories available and see which suit what you like and would eventually want to buy. Once you have bought in to a system and bought anything like new lenses it will cost a lot more to swap to another brand and replace everything, so consider them as a whole. On the point about changing lens mount, Canon have had two SLR mounts, the older manual FD mount, and the newer electronic EOS mount. When they changed they did alienate quite a lot of people, but have more than made up for it with the lens lineup available since, and you know that anything with an EF mount will fit any Canon EOS camera (so thats basically anything from the last twenty years, including the 19 year old lens I recently bought which works perfectly.) Nikon on the other hand have stuck with the same mount, but in recent years have changed some details in how it works and limited the lens choice for some newer cameras like the d40. I don't know exactly what is what though, the Nikon I own is from the 1970's so hopefully someone more knowledgeable could chime in. The best bet is to get yourself down to a few shops (Jessops, Lizars, John Lewis...) and handle some of the different cameras, see how they work and fit your hands. At the same time have a bit of a look into the lens lineups and accessories available and see what fits what you would like to use.
  12. I have heard a few good things about ffordes up in Inverness for camera stuff - they have quite a lot of secondhand stuff as well as new - ffordes photographic : Main Index
  13. I enjoyed it, personally I didn't think it any more far fetched that the earlier films, and it continued on from the earlier ones pretty well - however much people will be adamant that the earlier ones were better, they were in the main just as far fetched and all an enjoyable watch, never intended to have any deep meaning or thought behind them. It could have done to perhaps lose a couple of the big set pieces that were continually thrown at you in favour of expanding on the story a wee bit, but hell, I went to see it for a couple of hours of Indiana Jones exploring temples and fighting bad guys and that's what I got.
  14. To speak for the overwhelming majority of the people that posted on 28dl, breaking and entering doesn't enter into it. We explore places to learn something of them and get the chance to see a place most people don't even realise exists. To damage anything would just go against that view and reasoning. If anything else, to damage anything (be that trying to get in or causing trouble inside) takes exploring from trespass to the much more serious offence of breaking and entering... Some more photos from the visit to Satrosphere are here - Satrosphere, Aberdeen - 9/3/8 - Report - ARCHIVED - UK Urban Exploration Forums (the first post by me, the second by a friend of mine) when we were in with the person who posted the thread linked to earlier. Very sad to see somewhere I remembered as fondly from when I was little in such a state, but still very interesting and some rather cool finds - including the basement full of old scientific equipment and computers now skipped by the builders, and a room full of old (1970's) stage scenery and props (which we don't have any photos of) that was behind a bricked up wall to the rear of the car park with the door boarded over from the Satrosphere side and all but invisible until the builders cleared the place out (found on a revisit to see what damage the builders had made at that point) Kingseat Hospital, Aberdeenshire - 27/12/07 - Report - UK Urban Exploration Forums - Kingseat as it was in December, almost completely gone then, so I can't imagine there is anything left of it now. 28dl has kinda gone tits up now, it was a very busy site but the owners got annoyed with the negative side of everything and some petty infighting on the site so closed it as a forum only leaving it up as an archive. It now seems to have been revived in a more limited way (only the chosen few seem to be able to post there now, and it is missing all of the 'extra' forums) There are a lot of interesting places in Aberdeen and the surrounding area, you just need to keep your eyes open
  15. I would look at how you treat your headphones - the one thing I always see people doing is wrapping them around the mp3 player or sticking them unceremoniously in a pocket where the cable gets stressed right at the jack and dies fairly quickly. Make sure when you stick the mp3 player in your pocket that the jack is free and not being forced in any way and that you don't just ball them up and chuck them in a bag or anything. I am currently using a set of Sennheiser PX200's which do the job, similar to the px100's but a closed design so slightly more isolated
  16. A fantastic venue gone I will admit to not having gone to too many gigs there in the last while, A varied schedule and some dodgy promotion at times meant I usually missed the bands I would have gone to see... Hopefully will take the reigns and take the place over, even if it is under another name I am sure the place could do fantastically with some good planning. David
  17. I am taking it as real - it was posted on deadairspace (the official blog) and radiohead.com directs you to the in rainbows page. I guess it is continuing on from what happened after Kid A was leaked early which only seemed to help it when it was properly released. I wouldn't mind hearing how much people are paying for the download - I guess there will be a lot of people going for a free version to give it a listen, but how many will be paying? I will be getting myself the discbox anyway, and that has the download with it so you can listen while you wait for December 3rd to come around. I guess they are putting out the download as soon as the music is ready, and the wait for the album is getting the manufacturing and distribution sorted (inclding the lack of help from a label) Wander how hard it is going to be accessing the download on the 10th? the in rainbows site isn't exactly running the quickest for me right now, and that isn't shifting half the data... David
  18. I bought myself a Canon 400d on friday, and so far it is pretty damn good, though I need a bit more practise to be able to work it properly. Dave, I did come down to the bridge street shop to buy it from you guys after you were damn helpful when I was in a couple of times to chat about it and test out cameras, ended up going to the market street shop as you were out of stock on friday (I guess it probably makes no real difference to you, but cheers for the help, I did buy it in the end...) David
  19. Cool to see a Regents chap about here (I haven't posted in a while admittedly, though some muckups with the new anti spam stuff) I would guess a JB would hide a lot of the influence of the wood - something like a lower gain singlecoil (or even lower gain hb like a paf) should let the guitars qualities shine through a lot more As for cheap guitars, I have the stereotypical cheap beginners stratalike, and while it sounds completely different from my tele or bc rich, it has a sound of its own that sound great for some stuff, crap wood (and pickups) or not David
  20. Check the amp first. A lot of modern stuff will run on dual voltages, or at least give you a switch to set it for either, so you could get off fine without needing a transformer at all David
  21. Mike Davis (if I have the name right) by any chance? I would say most of the newest muffs should be very similar, as technology and qc has moved on a long way since the early Fuzz Faces and the rather hit and miss construction. The LBM in particular will be very consistent - the circuit is all SMD parts, so should be identically specced. The other new ones should all be pretty good now too though, as modern parts are all made to decent tolerances. David
  22. EHX have been improving the Big Muffs pretty steadily over the years, so some older ones are missing true bypass and so on that the newer ones do have. Manufacturing and the circuits have also varied depending on what parts have been available and what model you are looking at exactly, so therre is some variation in Muff sound throughout the years (though all still sound like a Big Muff should) The LBM is a fantastic pedal though, a nice solid diecast enclosure, with true bypass, so no affecting the tone when it is off, and an led which is always handy. Soundwise it is definately a Big Muff, the various models do sound slightly different, and the LBM is reportedly inbetween the Russian and US models soundwise. If you are looking at a Big Muff, the LBM seems a solid choice, I am definately most happy with mine, some genuine improvements over the 'traditional' US model (the LBM being made in the US too) like the casing to toughen it up a bit. A completely different pedal from a DS1 though, and 'better' is a completely subjective term, both pedals having their place, if you aren't completely sure, it probably would be worth trying one out, as it is a fuzz rather than the DS1's distortion The ZVex is a great pedal, but a different animal to the Muff, a lot more chaotic and noisey, and has a huge range of sound you can get from it, but in that a lot more fiddley to use and setup (a tweakers dream) the Big Muff on the other hand does a 'standard' Fuzz brilliantly. I have both and they both have their place David
  23. Never really had the chance to play the 'real' Musicman('s/men?) so can't really compare, I can only go as far as 'I love this bass'. All reports from elsewhere have been glowing so far really, exactly the same workmanship and electronics put into them, just the obvious cuts ('simpler' finish, satin neck, unmatched (aesthetics wise) wood) to bring down the price. I still love my Jazz, but I am definately now a Musicman man David
  24. Just got myself this - Musicman SUB Sterling Took me a while to get my hands on, as they were discontinued last year, but definately worth it. Sounds and feels awesome, and looks pretty cool too... David
