ERUPTION 2017/18

In collaboration with Captain Toms, Kenny's Music Aberdeen, and the Evening Express, Krakatoa are thrilled to announce ERUPTION 2017, a battle of the bands competition open to all performers within Aberdeen City & Shire aged 18 and over. Last year we amassed a £2,500 cash prize for the winners. Sponsors for this year are currently being actively sought - currently, the prize fund is sitting at £2000.

ERUPTION was launched in 2016 to stimulate interest in grassroots music within North East Scotland, and this will be its second running after a spectacular first year. We're especially delighted to welcome back last years sponsors, Captain Toms, Kenny's Music Aberdeen, and the Evening Express. Together with your help, we intend to continue showcasing just how deep and diverse the local talent pool is.

Heats will be held at Krakatoa on weekends throughout June, July, and August 2017. The semi-finals will take place in January 2018, with the Grand Final in February 2018. 

Each show will take place from 8pm-11pm and consist of 4 bands, each playing a 30 minute set. Running-order will be determined by chance on the night of the show. 

A door charge of £4 will be in effect from 7.45pm for each show. There will be no free admissions. The live music starts at 8pm.
This is a contest, so there will be no payment for performing, however Krakatoa will absorb all show costs, and you just might win £2000 in cash: someone has to!

Competing bands will be awarded a score. Depending on availability, bands are welcome to enter multiple times, in order to better their score. Scores are not cumulative. The 16 bands with the highest scores will be entered into the semi-finals, which will be decided by knockout, with one band from each semi-final progressing into the grand final. 

Judging will be by a panel. We’ll endeavour to ensure that these panels are as independent and objective as possible. 

Points out of 10 will be awarded for:
Material
Performance
Technical ability
Audience engagement
Professionalism
... to arrive at a potential maximum score of 50 per judge.

Comprehensive backline will be provided to facilitate short intervals, but performers are welcome to take along their own amps, pedals, snares, etc, and drummers will be expected to use their own cymbals. All acts need to be in the venue by 6pm, to load-in, discuss technical set-ups with our engineer, and take part in a game of chance to allocate their stage slot.

In collaboration with Captain Toms, Kenny's Music, and the Evening Express, we are thrilled to announce ERUPTION 2017, a battle of the bands competition open to all performers within Aberdeen City & Shire aged 18 and over. Last year we amassed a £2,500 cash prize for the winners. Sponsors for this year are currently being actively sought - currently, the prize fund is sitting at £2000.

ERUPTION was launched in 2016 to stimulate interest in grassroots music within North East Scotland, and this will be its second running after a spectacular first year. We're especially delighted to welcome back last years sponsors, Captain Toms, Kenny's Music, and the Evening Express. Together with your help, we intend to continue showcasing just how deep and diverse the local talent pool is.


Heats will be held on weekends throughout June, July, and August 2017. The semi-finals will take place in January 2018, with the Grand Final in February 2018. 

Each show will take place from 8pm-11pm and consist of 4 bands, each playing a 30 minute set. Running-order will be determined by chance on the night of the show. Comprehensive backline will be provided to facilitate short intervals, but performers are welcome to take along their own amps, pedals, snares, etc, and drummers will be expected to use their own cymbals. All acts need to be in the venue by 6pm, to load-in, discuss technical set-ups with our engineer, and take part in a game of chance to allocate their stage slot.


Competing bands will be awarded a score. Depending on availability, bands are welcome to enter multiple times, in order to better their score. Scores are not cumulative. The 16 bands with the highest scores will be entered into the semi-finals, which will be decided by knockout, with one band from each semi-final progressing into the grand final. 

Judging will be by a panel. We’ll endeavour to ensure that these panels are as independent and objective as possible. 

Points out of 10 will be awarded for:
Material
Performance
Technical ability
Audience engagement
Professionalism
... to arrive at a potential maximum score of 50 per judge.

A door charge of £4 will be in effect for each heat. There will be no free admissions. This is a contest, so there will be no payment for performing, however Krakatoa will absorb all show costs.
