Sorry, not sure where to start with this. I was recently chatting to the ex-singer of a well known punk band and I mentioned he should try and get up to Aberdeen on his next tour. Anyway, he emailed me earlier today asking if I know of a trustworthy promoter and good venue he could play. I've got no idea how to go about finding such things. Och, it's Steve Ignorant, ex Crass singer. Anybody any ideas?

    Cheers, Jon.

Sweet. You got any more vocal collaborations in the works on the album?

Yeah, I've browsed the Samplescience site before. I'm always put off from taking the plunge on softsynths, I always find them unsatisfying when I play them. I've only ever tried free ones, but they always sound thin compared to my BS2.

Is there any on there you'd recommend?

Not at present, got a few with sampled vocals. Interested in getting maybe one more with vocals on though.

I think Hexagon Sky is probably the one I like best. (Are you confusing Sampleism with Sample Science?)

Dig the new track. Trip hop is my jam right now, so this tickles my fancy. The singers voice is very nice, and the echo on the vocals really makes it all gel together.

Being super critical, I'd probably have pushed the vocal volume down in the mix a little bit, but that's totally personal preference and vocals are generally my least favourite part of any recording. I prefer vocals to sort of sit with the mix, rather than on top, personally.

I dig all the synth tones you're getting on this, assuming it's all you besides vocals?

Cheers Joe, thanks for the feedback and thanks for taking the time to listen!

Yeah, all the instrumentation is me. I’ve spent a lot of time on getting synth sounds to sit well in the mix :) I’ve found a bunch of soft-synths that I really like via a guy called Samplescience who has a lot of Boards of Canada style synth sounds that I really dig.

If you like this one I’m pretty sure you like the next single, should be out late Jan/ early Feb and the album I have in the works for March!

  5. Being studded on the testicles during a football match and the following 4 days (including a 3 night hospital stay) with them being severely swollen and black and blue and the additional distress of being used as a show and tell for medical students during the consultants rounds. The pain was unreal.

The nurses were golden though, one suggested a hammock like contraption to rest my balls in as I was in too much pain to sit/lie down with them touching my leg and the weight of the swollen mess.

    Sad times.

Thinking back, Jamesy didn't do himself or MMW any favours at times. I remember him getting in someone's face outside Moshulu and threatening to give them a hiding, all because of some scene politics. The wise thing to do would have been to sit down with the guy over a beer, but instead he lost the plot and went way over the line. I didn't know the guy, but Jamesy made an absolute arse out of himself in front of a crowd of people. It wasn't the only time he responded with aggression as well - I remember being told by several different people that he was going to kick my head in over what I'd posted on here and that I should watch my back. I don't think he would have, but his temper really did get the better of him at times. I don't doubt his work ethic, but he was the worst example of taking the internet too seriously.

Ben on the other hand never got involved in that stuff offline - I remember you'd normally find Ben in Moshulu just quietly drinking, and like you said, he never acted like a prima donna in public. He was also a good guy to a lot of young bands, but he never boasted about it on here or sang his own praises. I always had a lot of respect for him for that, because a lot of scene people were just nasty and spiteful towards young bands.

Hilariously though Jamesy was the least likely of all the MMW guys to be able to give you a kicking, though the most inclined to try. His attitude sucked, and he had a massive ego, but ultimately he was a decent enough guy.

I’ve got plenty of time for Ben, still mates with him, and always loved having a laugh or chat about Pantera or whatever with him and Dan especially.

I see the Braveheart warrior guy (not Peter Dow) quite regularly.  He still looks exactly the same.  He seems to have a regular commute up Spital and College Bounds between 5 and 6pm, which is a bit surprising.  I imagine him working for the Council or maybe at Sainsbury's Metro and looking like a regular guy before transforming into the super-hero warrior after work.

I’m pretty sure someone told me he works in Morrisons on King Street.

  9. I prefer ...Tesla out of the two but they’re both cool in totally different ways!

The guitar on Tesla is awesome, totally dripping with reverb and builds and falls nicely with the rest of the track. The bass has a touch too much distortion for my tastes in a track like this but it still works well.

I agree with Joe’s assessment of Thanatopsis re: the Jesu vibe, but would also add a dash of Smashing Pumpkins at their most orchestral and a wee dollop of MBV to the mix. Vocals sit well and pull the track together.

The one thing I’m less keen on is the drum sound. It does work a bit in Tesla but I think it’s too sparse to have that small an amount of resonance on the kick and have it so high in the mix. I think as it’s a bit busier in Thanatopsis it works a little better but is still a bit disinvolved with the track as a whole as well. Please don’t take that as being overly negative though as it’s just my personal tastes and opinion when it comes to drums and if you like it that’s the most important thing. Certainly wouldn’t stop me from listening to it!

    Glad you’re still playing/recording music :)

Did you go to their gig at the Tunnels? That was cruel. A lot of people who should have known better laughing up their sleeves. Myself included. We all got a bit swept away in the mob mentality on that one.

No, I was quite open about saying they were shit in the thread. There was no way I would’ve gone to their gig, the whole thing was cringeworthy. The puns went on for deys though...

Christ. The Balmedie Beach Party, featuring a shocking amount of booze, people throwing up and more. I remember sitting on the back of the bus drinking with Emma and listening to Sugarcoma while clearly failing to be in any way cool. @Alkaline, were you there?

I don’t think I was going out with Emma at that point but I may have been there (there are a lot of parts of that era that are very hazy!)

I didn't join until 2006 (I'm not an Aberdeen native; although the maternal side of my family is). I was never friends with any other forum members, but I sold CDs and pedals to, and jammed with, not a few members.

I  remember an instance where a band was looking for a replacement guitarist, and, while insisting it was an established and successful band (by Aberdeen standards - it may or may not have had a record deal at that point; in any case it gained one shortly after, if not prior to, the exchange), refused to give its name. I know this because I jammed with them for a bit (sadly, it came to nothing, otherwise it would doubtlessly have conquered the world with I playing lead guitar....). IIRC, Alkaline gave them a serious ribbing  for this determined anonymity ( I can see why, but the thing is that) Alkaline had also previously highly praised the band (before they fired whichever member) when it posted its work for feedback. I almost sent a PM to Alkaline tipping him off to the fact that he wasn't questioning a SHUTTERSPEED band, but one he'd expressed admiration for, and which he seemed to have admired and praised. Didn't though - I may have found Alkaline irksome in some way (of course I don't remember why; this was c. a decade ago ffs), but he is/was a Dundee United fan (sure sign of a GBOL). Or perhaps I thought bands should always be judged on their songs rather than their names and/or for ad hominem reasons . Where was I going with this...? Oh, yeah, that was an amusing exchange from my point of view.

Otherwise, off the top of my head, Stripy (or Striphy), I miss now and again. It's true that he broke the site's rules re. civility as if he were exempt, and , even if he were, was long overdue a permaban by the time it happened. But otherwise he brought a different musical preference and insight to the site (and while he seemed to be regarded as an elitist snob, this did't seem to be the case when he was critiquing a hip-hop or maybe an electronic group). He was talking about dubstep and so on, years before it (or some wank version of it) became  chart-topping via skrillowpad and whoever else. (and his angry political posts were easily dismissed as  nonsensical or, uh, nonsensical) . He posted very little of his own music (having, he claimed, a record deal in the USA'; which seemed to be verifiably true). Assuming this was not a skilled a hoax, in the profile published by his US employers, he lauded Aberdeen's music scene and applauded its diversity, believe it of not.

Other than that, I got a few jams with various bands and was introduced to quite a bit of new music . Bought and sold some nice bits of gear. Cam't complain.

I don’t even remember this. Can’t remember ever having a problem with you either.

I think I gave as good as I got in the heyday of this site though.

Glad people think I’ve “calmed” a bit though, not that I was particularly un-calm but I sure loved a good verbal joust.

Wizened Anal Sage was probably one of my personal highlights. Lowlight was calling Ewan an odious little cunt (not that I like him at all of course, just that I let him bother me enough to comment on it). The response was ridiculously OTT for something so innocuous though.

I always respected Stripey even though he could be insufferable, Ben was/is a good guy and despite the odd tête-à-tête on here I generally got on well with most folks in real life.

This site is real shit now.
