Like Protools or Cubase, whatever is best really.I would pay for some basic tuition.

There is a Protools DVD out now. Its on the news section at digidesign.com though getting protools + hardware could be expensive...

Regardless of what software you use, you're gonna need the following:

Reasonable spec PC with at least 512Mb RAM (assuming you're running Windows XP)
or
Mac equivalent (sorry, know nothing about Macs)

A decent sound interface! Bare minumum IMHO is either a mixing desk (with pre-amps) or a soundcard with an external breakout box (with pre-amps).

e.g.

If you go for the desk option, you'd still benefit from a good quality 3rd party soundcard rather than using any "onboard" sound.
