Default mod edits

Is it the case that a mod can edit their own posts without the usual "last edited" thing showing up when anyone else looks at it? Or does the site no longer show when a post has been edited?

It depends how long after you make the post as to whether it says 'last edited'.

If you edit immediately, as I'm doing now, it usually doesn't say.

Re-editing 10 minutes later now. It didn't say when I edited immediately, it does now.

No, the "last edited" note will still appear if a staff member edits their or other people's post(s) anytime after the initial 5 minute grace period that all users get to edit new posts.

There is one exception to this of course and that's me. Although I don't make a habit of editing other people's posts and haven't done so in recent weeks.

Is there any particular reason why there is this 5 minute grace period? Because it's clearly open to abuse. If a post has been edited it should be marked as such.

Yep, there is a point to it. I'm sure I'm not alone in making a post and then re-reading it to discover a typo, spelling mistake, link or image that has not displayed correctly within the post. The 5 minute window gives everyone a chance to correct such things without notice.

The reason this grace period is limited to 5 minutes is to reduce the chance of any abuse.

If an edited post was always marked as edited, surely this would encourage people to think a bit harder about posting in the first place, which can only be a good thing.
On the other hand, giving someone 5 minutes grace to completely alter the character of a post while in the meantime someone has already quoted it and posted a reply is definately open to abuse.
