Default Woolies goes tits up

BBC NEWS | Business | Woolworths closure sale kicks off

But does anyone really care? It's hardly the staple of the high street it used to be, these days it seems to sell mostly tat that you can find a bigger selection of at Asda and Tesco, and it's not as cheap either. I think part of their downfall is that they are a "jack of all trades, master of none" - ie they have a small selection of loads of different things (toys, homeware, console games, electronics, CDs etc) but you can get a much better selection of these things at specialist stores, and Woolworths doesn't really specialise in anything.

Ah well, closing down sale starts today, head down to the Bon Accord for bargains a-plenty. Be prepared to elbow old ladies out of the way.

You get pick 'n' mix in Asda, in fact therein lies the root of Woolies' problem - the supermarkets have expanded into just about everything in the last ten years, and Woolies have simply been squeezed out.

Sad, and I'll always have fond memories of the old Wooliesss on Union Street where MacDonalds is now, but that 's market forces at work I'm afraid.

I used to steal that when I was a kid.

Maybe that's why it's gone out of business.

I think it's quite sad. I used to get my new school year stationary in Woolies and on Easter Monday we'd go on a day trip to a sea side town and get half price Easter eggs.

In saying that the last thing I bought from Woolworths was a birthday card about 2 months ago.

I bought some dominoes and Othello (the board game) about 6 months ago.

Scenes like that literally turn my stomach, fucking vultures circling. Can't stand seeing people degrading themselves like that.

Personally, I'm not arsed about it as I don't really do much shopping as such so I'm never in there. However, a friend has worked there for years and she's hanging on to the bitter end, hoping against hope for some sort of redundancy deal. Either way, the CV's been updated so good luck to her. I hope people spare a thought for her when they're scavenging their way through the place.
