Are you doing anything to help stop all those Iraqis dying, or are you just trying to demonstrate your moral superiority on an internet forum? Because if you're lobbying ministers and campagining to help then great, if you feel so strongly that you're going to go to Iraq and get actively involved then I salute you. But if you're just reeling off statistics to make other people feel small then I find that far more offensive.
Actually yes, I've been pressing my MP and MSP on these issues since before the invasion in 2003 and continue to do so. But that is beside the point, you didn't know those figures because people like you are too busy clapping along with the gutter press to give a shit about real news.

People like me...and what am I like then? Apart from being the kind of person who is happy to hear that a child has been safely returned to her family.

You're right, you have clearly learned all you need to know about me from this one thread. I certainly know all I want to know about you.

Bravo on pressing your MP and MSP though, you're obviously making a great contribution to the cause.

The kind of people who consume trashy newspaper, tv and radio news of this nature are absolutely responsible for the fact that the newsmedia in this country is so out of touch with what it's true purpose should be, which is investigative journalism and informing people about things that matter rather than entertaining people with heartwarming non-news and parroting government press releases.

The only reason you are even aware of this girls existence is because it makes a good sensationalist story, and your original post makes it clear you enjoy the emotional buttons it's pushed. You may aswell have been talking about an episode of hollyoaks because neither have any relevance to your own life beyond giving you something to gossip about.

Unless you are a child, it is people like you who just sat back and watched Iraq being invaded.

Oh fuck off. If anyone is pushing emotional buttons, it's you.
I don't understand why you insist on doing this over and over. If you don't like a thread someone has written, don't read it. It really is that simple.

Don't you dare reduce me to a stereotype when you have no idea who I am or what I do. Your assumption that everyone other than you reads The Sun, gobbles up everything the government tells them and generally hasn't an original thought in their head is insulting.

The death of people in Iraq does not directly affect me, nor does it directly affect you. I'm disgusted to learn that statistic but the fact that I didn't know it has nothing to do with me sitting back and watching Iraq being invaded. It doesn't make me a bad person, it doesn't mean I don't care. For what it's worth, and for all the good it did, I went a quite a few anti war marches and demonstrations when it all started. I cast my vote in the election according to how I felt about the war, among other things. I did not 'just sit back'.

What it comes down to is you hijacking yet another thread to sneer at everyone else. And to be honest, all you've achieved is making yourself seem even more bitter and unpleasant. If you can honestly say that you don't give a shit about some poor child being abducted and abused in your own country, then I really pity you. You've no sympathy at all and that's really sad.

Mods - someone please close this thread now, it's obviously got out of hand and way off topic

Actually, I disagree in this case. But if we could all refrain from using insults and try keep this a civilised debate then that would be most appreciated.

Well, you've accused me of doing nothing about iraq but infact starting a debate about how stupid and worthless stories like this or maddie mcann are is doing something about it, nothing is ever going to change if people can't point out such things. If you want to make threads about this rubbish go and post on the daily mails website, but don't whine when civilised people take offense just because you expect them to clap along with your trashy sob story.
