Default america throws a strop over torture list

Canada to Rewrite Manual US Criticized

Quote:
TORONTO -- Canada's foreign ministry said Saturday that it will rewrite a training manual used by Canadian diplomats that lists the United States as a site of possible torture following pressure from its closest ally.

The department document, released Friday, singled out the U.S. detention center at Guantanamo Bay. It also names Israel, Afghanistan, China, Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Mexico and Syria as places where inmates could face torture.
Quote:
"We find it to be offensive for us to be on the same list with countries such as Iran and China. Quite frankly it's absurd," U.S. Ambassador David Wilkins told The Associated Press on Friday. "For us to be on a list like that is just ridiculous."

Why are they so upset about being listed as a nation that uses torture as a technique for information extraction. There's nothing wrong with torture if the people involved are definitely guilty and withholding important information that may cause further loss of life.

All countries have used (or still use) methods of torture at some point. Isn't confinement in prison a form of torture?

They shouldn't care about it.

Surely everyone confesses to guilt after torture. Whether guilty or not.

Torture should be reserved for those already found guilty via the legal process.

Yeah, you may have missed my point there, i was only talking about torturing guilty people not people who are still awaiting trial.

And i disagree with your first point as it depends on the reason for torture and if the person doing it wants a proper answer or just wants to feel that the torture is justified.

Total immersion and mental torture are the best ways of doing it IMHO, physical torture is too risky.

So, hypothetically of course, a group of people have kidnapped your daughter. You have one of them in custody, they aren't talking, they know where she is. All other avenues are exhausted, torture is the only option you have left. They will kill her if you don't find her first.

Are you really saying you wouldn't do everything it takes to save her life, even if you have to hurt someone in the process?

By the way. You only have 24 hours.....

It's nice that the government is at least ashamed.

I dont see the problem, torture is a viable form of law enforcement and should be welcomed in any civilised country, the death penalty however.....
