Anyone who uses this as an excuse not to stay in aberdeen is just a little bit of a loser, Aberdeen and its native inhabitants are enough of an excuse

Ridiculous. How the hell's it gonna reduce the amount of drunken people on the streets? There'll be more, and all very pissed off. What if you queue but still don't get in by half twelve? Why's it called a curfew? It isn't, its shutting people out not keeping them in. Nights out will require meticulous planning.

It's an incredibly naive and stupid idea. Must have looked good on a whiteboard.

If they extend it to 0130 at the weekend then it's not quite as bad...

But the easy solution to this, and many other bad decisions of late, is to vote the fuckers out of office at the earliest possible opportunity.

There's also the new licensing act coming along soon that might have a major impact on this plan.

Agree. One London Bourough was operating this sort of scheme a couple of years back & it really was not at all condusive to a good atmosphere on the streets. A large group of us had been to a concert & when it came out, some went back to the pub whilst others went to grab a bite to eat. Only to find that we couldn't get back into the pub because a 10:30pm curfew was in force & we were now spit from out mates. Even folk who had left bags, coats etc in the room we hired for a meet-up that night were refused entry for their belongings. The only other option was to queue-up & pay to get into a club, where you could be admitted up to 12:30, or 1:30 for the few latest licenced (& most expensive) places. I'd given-up on getting a drink so a few of us just wandered about & watched hte fun. As 12:30 approached, the jockeying amongst the folk in queues to get in was getting pretty bad & I caould see that turning nasty, very easily.

We were clearly not the only ones pissed-off with this & some of my lot didn't get their goods back till the next day.

Think I heard sometime later that the council scrapped that idea.

They'll just have to extend the off-licences hours so that we can get pissed on the street instead.

There'd be ways of getting round this, just like a few years ago when the council (or maybe it was government) wanted to put a minimum price on all alcohol bought in pubs/clubs.

Pogofish raises an interesting question though: what happens if you're queuing? Say you've been there for a while because the bouncers are making sure the stairwell is clear in Moshulu or whatever, do you get in or not? And that would mean your whole night would be fucked, especially because every club would have massive queues outside it (full of half cut folk getting annoyed) from midnight.

God! This is a terrible idea, they really don't seem to think things through, do they?

That was more or less it. As the different times for the pubs & clubs was reached, the bar just descended. Anyone in the queue but not in the door was told to go away & try the later-opening queues. Hence the number of folk trying to swick their way up the queue (think how taxi-rank here could be)

Think a fair number of the carry-outs & late shops in that area were doing a roaring under the counter trade in booze as well.

A vague memory but I think there is/was a nominal advisory number for queues under the licencing regs which might be tolerable? IIRC tho, it was not very much, @20-30 people max.

Maybe one of the pub/door people could clarify if that might have any bearing.

What a load of bollocks. I have been to Glasgow on many nights out, and the curfew doesn't do anything for getting people off the streets, it just makes it happen earlier. Ok, there are a few places that are notoriously bad for drunken fights at the weekends, but after people leave the clubs it goes away after about half an hour. Under the council's new proposals, there will be pissed people wandering about aimlessly all night, jumping from one queue to another, getting annoyed cos they've lost their mates, and will probably pick a fight with someone to vent their frustration.

Just let people go where they want to go. Some drunk people are just not reasonable, and if you ruin their night they will only take it out on some unsuspecting victim on their way home.
