Default News - where do you get it from? - 15-10-2007, 20:07

I watched the Channel 4 news for the first time in a long while tonight. Usually it's the BBC news i watch or News24 (usually because the TV's hijacked at 7 for soaps). I don't know if it's because i'm tired tonight, but Ch4 news seems quite relaxed... they spent a lot of time on each story, coming back to a particular story throughout the hour, and i like the fact that the main newsman can be quite abrupt with the people he's interviewing in order to get answers to questions.

So i'm wondering what news you guys watch/like, if any? And why? Or do you only look at news online? Or in newspapers? Or do you stay away from the news altogether?

TV: (when i have one)
BBC News 24 (good if you can sit through the nonsense, often i can't)
Al Jazeera (good at covering stories that get overlooked by the bbc because they are too busy reporting about kids who have been shot and the terrors of the violent murderous youth of today.)

web:
Fark (it's not news, its fark.com)
BBC
Slashdot (geek news)
Socialist Worker (usually have sensible stories. eg. while the rest of the british media was throwing a spaz about how terrible young people are etc after that kid got shot the SW front page story was "If young people aren’t valued, why would they value others?")

Newspapers:
Independent
Observer/Guardian
(whichever i spot first/can be bothered picking up)

Journals/Magazines:
Nature (free access through uni!)
NewScientist
some others, but mostly computer science related research things, not so much "news" in the general sense.

I get my news fix on global politics every morning from Antiwar.com (good for diverse opinion pieces from various sources aswell), along with the usual cursory glance at news.bbc.co.uk, cnn.com and sometimes foxnews.com just to see what the loonies are reporting.

TV news is just tedious, often biased, usually tabloidy and simplistic and served up at a snails pace, it infuriates me.

Heh, I can't help but presume Antiwar.com is also somewhat biased...

I usually just check BBC News on the internet (my homepage in fact) to check that the world isn't blowing up or anything.

It's an old favourite, but Drudge is always a good starting point. Breitbart is always useful as well. The BBC website is good for garnering basic information, but you have to be careful of the poisonous leftist spin they put on everything.

For analysis, and the occasional breaking news story, I would suggest Iain Dale's Diary, Chris Hitchens fanboys, and their recommended links and partners. Honourable mentions go to Guido Fawkes and, of course, The Spectator.

For online TV coverage, I suggest 18 Doughty Street : Politics for Adults | HOME

I only really bother with C4 news and Newsnight, on the telly. The mainstream half hours devote far too much time to Madeleine McCann and Princess Di(ed. Yes, please get over it.)

As for teh internets, I find Yahoo can be surprisingly good, and the BBC site is an amazing resource. Brian Taylor's blog is always a laugh for Nationalist Vs Unionist comment-offs!

Newspapers?

TV:
Channel 4 news - I try and watch it most days.
BBC News 24 – Just to check the headlines.

Internet:
News.bbc.co.uk – Again, good for a quick flick at work for the headlines.
I tend to do a search for any articles I have a greater interest in.

Paper:
The Times/The Independent usually though I’m prone to buy The Daily Mail on occasion for a top up of right wing insanity. All in all I rarely buy papers unless I'm travelling or having lunch at my desk.

Well it's primarily just a news aggregator, linking to articles from multiple news agencies so it's not really biased. The opinion pieces (which are usually pretty well researched) can of course be biased, but they are quite non-partisan with contributors from all sorts of political backgrounds.
Anyway, what's wrong with being biased towards peace and a "let's not kill loads of innocent people" position?
