Another charismatic politician bites the dust, shame we've not seen much of him since his resignation though. Good guy, although I'd say he'll probably be remembered for the wrong things by folk who saw his last few years (alcoholism & eratic behaviour), as opposed to any of the sterling work he did after the collapse of the USSR!

Heck, what about the work that he did before the collapse too? The power struggle between him and Gorbachev in the final year of the USSR is pretty interesting stuff, especially the way that he effectively stood up against the Communist hardliners during the attempted coup.
