Default Global Dimming

The Very Serious Threat of Global Dimming

Something we hear about nearly everyday is Global warming. Sure, it's a threat and it is a worry. But something we rarely hear about is the other monster thats tracking us down, Global Dimming.

_____

Imagine the harshest, arrid, desert land, where no green grass grows, all the water has evaporated into the dry cracked land and all your livestock that you depend on has died from malnutrition. Where thousands die everyday because there isn't any help. Where mothers cradle there dying children whilst praying to the almighty for one morsel of rain. Imagine a drought so devastating it could wipe out over a million people in a country that houses eight million in under a year, this isn't a disease, virus, or epidemic - this is people slowly starving to death or dehydrating in the searing anderlussian rays.

Cast your mind back to 1984 - 1985 and further on to the early 90's were the butt of many a joke were the Ethiopians. A famine that killed an estimated Million people, and destroyed an economy in one swoop imprinted itself on the agricultral dependant country of Ethiopia. It was described as 'Hell on Earth' and now as we remind ourselves that life can kick the shit out of us, we agree with Michael Burkes description of what he saw, what we all saw. And what we must never see again.

______

September the 12th, 2001 was a rare day for one man who believed that condensation trails left by planes were harming the Earth's atmosphere. His theories were never backed and it would have been impossible to proove as stopping all American planes from entering the sky would have resulted in civil chaos.

But the day before, Sept. 11th 2001, a dark day in history brought a glimmer of light to this man who for 15 years had been waiting for an opportunity such as, although I'm sure he wouldn't have wished for what happened on 9/11 to help present this opportunity. With all in and outbound commercial flights across America grounded, his chance to observe the atmosphere over the next few days would give him the key to the ignition of one of the biggest threats to our planet.. ever!

David Travis' conducted tests to see if they were harming our climate and found the evidence in abundance that he was looking for. The evidence that may have changed the way we conduct our lives from now on.

_______

He wasn't the first to notice that the Earth was losing heat, yet getting hotter. He was one of many who had already coined the dimming theory, but without the suffienct data to back it up they were going no-where fast, untill 9/11 presented them with the fears they had been expecting.

The 9/11 study showed that removing contrails resulted in a large increase in the daily temperature range - in other words warmer days and cooler nights. What seems clear is that contrails contribute to a reduction in the amount of daytime Solar radiation reaching the surface, and that this has signifcant effects on temperature. Aircraft contrails have been raising nighttime temperatures and/or lowering daytime temperatures by much more than previously thought by those studying the Dimming effect pre-9/11.

________

Quote:
It is currently thought that the effect of global dimming is probably due to the increased presence of aerosol particles in the atmosphere. Aerosol particles and other particulate pollutants absorb solar energy and reflect sunlight back into space. The pollutants can also become nuclei for cloud droplets. It is thought that the water droplets in clouds coalesce around the particles. Increased pollution, resulting in more particulates, creates clouds consisting of a greater number of smaller droplets, which in turn makes them more reflective, therefore bouncing more sunlight back into space.

Clouds intercept both heat from the sun and heat radiated from the Earth. Their effects are complex and vary in time, location and altitude. Usually during the daytime the interception of sunlight predominates, giving a cooling effect; however, at night the re-radiation of heat to the Earth slows the Earth's heat loss.
Quote:
Global dimming may have caused large scale changes in weather patterns. Climate models speculatively suggest that this reduction in sunshine at the surface may have led to the failure of the monsoon in sub-Saharan Africa during the 1970s and 1980s, together with the associated famines such as the Sahel drought, caused by Northern hemisphere pollution cooling the Atlantic. Because of this, the Tropical rain belt may not have risen to its northern latitudes, thus causing an absence of seasonal rains. This claim is not universally accepted and is very difficult to test.
The future is bright?

Even the most pessimistic forecasts of global warming may now have to be drastically revised upwards. That means a temperature rise of 10°C by 2100 could be on the cards, giving the UK a climate like that of North Africa, and rendering many parts of the world uninhabitable. That is unless we act urgently to curb our emissions of greenhouse gases.

What we seen in Ethiopia is a warning shot to the rest of the World, estimations predict; Asia will be looking at crazy monsoons that have the potential to wipe out Billions.

The Rain forest is already seeing the dramatic shift of Climate change and once it begins to get hotter, it may catch fire and be transformed into an arrid desert. It really could happen unless we (World) begin to take drastic measures in reducing greenhouse gasses, and the way we view our paradise.

Not only do we need to do this for ourselves, but we face even more danger by losing vital parts of the Eco system that we rely so heavily on.

The relationship between Global Warming and Global Dimming.

Some scientists now consider the effects of global dimming have masked the effect of global warming to some extent and that resolving global dimming may therefore lead to increases in predictions of future temperature rise. It may be suggested that increasing aerosol might be a possible solution to global warming. However, aerosol has negative effects (acid rain) which is why nations have made efforts to reduce it. Also, the aerosol has a very short lifetime (weeks).

The phenomenon underlying global dimming may also have regional effects. While most of the earth has warmed, the regions that are downwind from major sources of air pollution (specifically sulfur dioxide emissions) have generally cooled. This may explain the cooling of the eastern US relative to the warming western part.

Horizion - Global Dimming is a documentary you really need to watch to understand the realism of it all, pass it on if you can.

How can any of you ever expect to be taken seriously.. If you don't want to read it I'm sure you don't need to broadcast it.

Hey guys I'm not that fussed to be honest. Just trying to raise some awareness. You don't have to read f-all but can you at least look at the documentary before deciding what the truth is (shaun).

Pollution is shielding the oceans from the full power of the Sun, and disrupting the pattern of the world's rainfall. There is evidence that dimming caused the droughts in sub-Saharan Africa which claimed Millions of lives in the 1970s and 1980s. Alarmingly the dimming continues today, and Asia, home to half the world-s population is currently under threat.

So basically..
The World is fucked because some scientists wouldn't believe that Global Dimming is the cause of Climate change rather than Global Warming.

Please just take 50 minutes out of your life to watch the Documentary and make your own mind up...
