Default Girlbands... discuss. - 14-08-2007, 13:59

So it seems that between now and Christmas, we've got the glorious return of the girlband.

Girl Aloud have already debuted their new material, in the form of Sexy! No, no no. Sugababes 'About You Now' got its first play today and from what I've heard, (i.e. had it on repeat for the last half hour) it is an absolute stonker - quite probably better than Sexy! I know it's gonna take something pretty strong to beat the new latex clad video, but if they manage to pull it off I think they could have one of their biggest hits ever (who the fuck is Mutya).

But can the Spice Girls blow them out of the water with their return? They really are going to have to up their game with a new single to compete with the young-uns' especially if the rumours of it being the Children In Need single are true. What with them usually being generic ballads (saying that the last couple haven't though) Whether they decide to hold out for Christmas number one or not, I don't know. I have a feeling they wont risk it, they wouldn't want to taint their Christmas number one record. But if anyone can do it it's the fucking Spice Girls. Ideally I'd like to see a dancefloor smash like 'Who Do You Think You Are?' early November for Children In Need and then the big ballad mid December in time for the Chrismas race. With a thorough retrospective in the middle with all the singles, b-sides and some rarities.

If anyone can end this wave of trivial indie boys and singer/songwriter that we've got it's a good girlband.

Banarama anyone?

Ideally, I'd like to never hear any mention of this type of 'band' ever again.

Yes, pre-fab girlbands are exactly what popular music needs.

Cuh. Come on boys... to me it's a no-brainer. Meat and two veg white middle class indie rockers with turgid takes on 'real' music or PVC clad popstrels with sassy songs as angular as their cheekbones... tick, tock... So they don't write their own songs? Two words for you - Elvis Presley. Two more - Dusty Springfield.
Loving the Girls Aloud single, loving Robyn, loving Rihanna, loving Kate Nash, loving the Mutya/Groove Armada track... not heard the Sugababes one yet and I look forward to the Spice Girls' glorious return, but they will indeed have to go some to top Sarah Harding in black PVC.
Ahem. Girl power.

Oh Christ Almighty... Why are you thinking about this so much? It's like standing in your favourite gallery and waiting to see which painting the Gallery director puts up next. There is a whole world of new and sublime music out there just waiting to be found. Go and find it...
