Ive just got back from the 02Wireless Festival at Leeds. Guess wot? The best act by far was two blokes dressed as robots pressing buttons over a pre-programmed set. This was possibly the best LIVE act Ive ever seen. *Racks brain's gig archives* .........mmmmmm........can categorically confirm it was THEE best performance Ive ever seen! Pure Fucking GENIUS.
Name of band = Daft Punk.

All other points of view with respect the the merits of the now dated and futile art of banging, twanging and hitting stuff on stages to impress people are now void.

Gimme some buttons. This is the year 2007.

Thread Closed. Probably.

They weren't miming though - they were playing their style of music.

But on that note, I've often thought that with electronic music, it's up to the 'performer' to choose how much of the music he wants to play and how much he wants to automate, no? A traditional band has to make all the sound themselves - you can't switch a guitar onto 'automatic' if you're hungover...

Thoughts?

Yeah I'd totally pay to see 2 blokes dressed as robots. But if the were dressed as geeks then (for me) the appeal would be diminished.

Backing track TOTP. See it has been done many times, and in most cases for good technical reasons.

But Milli Vanilli didn't even sing or play ont heir own backing track (or more correctly FRONTING track) LMAO!

With Daft Punk and electronic music on a whole I think the only thing that is essential is visual impact. There isn't really an excuse to mime vocals but certainly if there aren't enough of you to play all the parts in a song... or you're standing about actually doing nothing but don't want to look like a twat stood next to a synth then I say pretend to play it (but at least play as much as you can - if only for your own enjoyment)... hell... I have in the past (only once though) and nobody noticed.

Electric drum kits combined with loops.... that is the dream.

A B L E T O N L I V E!

Haven't you guys seen people doing live sets with ableton, playing synth riffs, capturing them in realtime then processing these "live" loops with effects controlled by midi controllers, building up layers etc, there are loads and loads of possibilities for frantic and engaging live perfomances.

Nobody can say Orbital, for example, were a shit live act, now the tools available are a lot more powerful, a lot more flexible and have a hell of a lot to offer bands today which sit somewhere between the traditional and the entirely digital.

All that's holding back the adoption of this stuff is ignorance and dogma.

Geeks prancing around a laptop? Who needs to see some prick in a pirate costume or whatever when live electronic music can be this good : YouTube - Crazy (Live Remix) - DJ Enferno Live In Taiwan

there is absolutely nothing stopping people doing stuff like this with added live guitars/vocal/anything they imagine.

Now why did you interpret my post as a personal attack (you geek)?

See I don't agree with that. If there's a part where there's no guitar in one of our songs, I'm not gonna pretent to play guitar; that would just look stupid! Ok you might not look so stupid if you're playing electronic music, but I hope you see what I mean.

I saw colonopenbracket once and whilst I was mighty impressed with the drummer & singer I thought that the girls playing the keyboards (haha) looked like they were pretending to play...and it just pissed me off. I dunno, I guess it's about the performance/show with that type of band but like Flash says, who wants to watch someone hit a button then prance around?

You don't have a clue what you are talking about, you are clearly totally ignorant about the use of contemporary digital equipment in a live setting and completely out of touch with the modern approach to music. If all you can contribute to this discussion is pathetic childish stereotyping and name calling I suggest you keep your mouth shut.
I interpreted your post as a personal attack because that's exactly what it was and you know it, stop trolling and wake up to the innovations of the 21st century, it isn't 1980 anymore and frankly people like you with dogmatic, ignorant attitudes towards "new fangled things" which you don't understand are a hindrance to those of us who have the aspirations, the imagination and the knowledge to be creative with the tools available to us today. Face facts mate, you're behind the times, outside the loop, and it won't be long before you are collecting your pension book. Stop slagging off the next generation just because you don't understand it and can't relate to it.
