Default Somerfield checkouts, Union Street

What a calamity that place is......after carefully selecting and filling your basket with all sorts of fine Somerfield delicacies, you are faced with the glorified three-ringed circus at the end - that is the checkouts. They really are the ultimate test on Joe public's IQ and intelligence. It says to queue at individual checkouts very clearly - some folk do, but so many don't. How daft can you get? It's so damn slow! When folk pathetically queue at the same front till, others have to barge through to get to the tills at the top and then folk wonder why they didn't do that before and then like sheep they start shifting around ever so slowly wondering what's going on.....AND if you are in a queue and then realise the one next to you is shorter, it's common sense to move to that one if the pleb in front of you hasn't experienced the same brainwave......but then the fear is that you might get a sledgehammer sliced through the back of your head for queue jumping when you weren't....A very complex set-up indeed, when it needn't be. Am sure there's a reason for it...and that it would be v.effective if some folk just woke up. Very busy place. Must be a real stress working there. I'm still awaiting a riot to take place at some point....would make the whole banal waiting at the tills way more exciting.....

I always by-pass the huge queue nearer the back of the store and join the shorter queues nearer the front of the building. I also shove my headphones in and play music loudly and have little fear of appearing, "rude" for not queue jumping and actually just having a clue.

I usually avoid that place like the plague though, especially around tea time - hell. I only go in when I really have to.

It is indeed very British and silly. Poorly designed layout. You can feel the scowls directed towards you when you acknowledge the "please queue at individual checkouts" sign and get served way before all the idiots in the big long queue. Fuck them though, I ain't here to co-ordinate their queueing.

Default Q ing is great

I like admiring other peoples choices of foodstuffs, it kills a wee bit of time and is better than reality TV .

This is the ultimate confirmation that people are thick as shit. Each check out plainly says 'queue at individual tills' so I have no qualms about queue jumping if everyone else is too stupid to get that concept.

yea i agree. i've rarely had to queue longer than 5 minutes in that place just because i join the shortest queue in the shop every time. they should have someone co-ordinating the queues at busy times really. been like that since it was safeway though and i don't see it changing anytime soon.

On a SLIGHTLY related note....if you use the self service check outs in the one at the bottom of George Street, you can put through choclate croissants as normal butter ones cos they weigh the same and get them for half price.

Just thought I'd mention that. Im gonna weigh everything in Somerfield that doesnt have a bar-code and see what else I can come up with.

The problem happens all the time at Superdrug. There are 3 rows of tills and it always ends up a big queue waiting to go to any till.
Some people are utterly stupid when it comes to the strategies of shopping.

It's an added bit of fun in your shop though, listening to people making 'angry noises' behind you as you utilise the power of your brain. It's ace!
