Default The glorious state of pop music? - 10-11-2006, 01:21

In a week when something (kinda oooh) remarkable happens - i.e. Girls Aloud's Greatest Hits debut's at number 1 on the album chart, the media is abuzz with claims that pop music really does seem to be back from the dead.

However, all is not well in the land of pop.

31 weeks ago, Wigwam's Wigwam - argueably one of the greatest pop singles this year was released and made it to number 60.

4 weeks ago, Patrick Wolf released, not just the finest pop song, but quite possibly the best song that will be released this year and it didn't even scrape into the top 75.

2 weeks ago, Alesha (M with the I with the S-T double E Q) released knockdown - charted number 45 - bad week to be her really actually - poor javine my arse.

4 days ago, Westlife returned with yet another round of ballad torture, this time taking on good ole bette. The Rose is no doubt going to go top 5 - quite possibly number 1 if it can knock Freddie Le Grande off the top. People will buy any kind of drivel.

4 days ago, All Saints spectacularly returned to form with the brilliant Rock Steady. It will be a hit, but by gum Westlife will sell more copies even without standing up at the key change - even Shaznay's over-zealous freckling won't help.

10 days from now, Take That will return in far less spectacular manner. They will however go straight to the top of the charts and stay there for a few weeks, even though Patience sounds like something James Blunt shat out his mouth.

When will the record buying public stop being shit! They'll buy any old crap and allow actual talent to be dropped before they even get to release and album. What can be done to remedy this situation?

Finally praemonitus praemunitus

17 days from now - you might want to go into hiding, possible sign of the apocalypse

1. A Whole New World
2. The Best Things In Life Are Free
3. Endless Love
4. Islands In The Stream
5. Tonight I Celebrate
6. My Love For You
7. Cherish
8. The Two Of Us
9. I Come Down
10. Don't Go Breaking My Heart
11. To Die For
12. I've Had the Time Of My Life
13. Lullaby

It just makes me want to cry.

Yes, it's a crazy mixed up world. I can kind of accept Westlife sleepwalking to another number one - literally (Louis Walsh isn't even trying to disguise it any more, he just opened up the formula marked Christmas shmaltz single) and keeping the mighty and wondrous Shanznay off the top, but a world where Wigwam and Aleesha do not even chart? It's too awful to even think about. What, is this a conspiracy to keep shiny black bobs off the airwaves?

pop music is alive and well... i've just seen the video for gwne stefani's wind it up. I had decided weeks ago after obtaining for the first time that this was genuinely the worst thing that she had ever done. but by god! it just clicked. It is certainly a tune and a half.

Lay ee odl lay ee odl lay hee hoo.

(you may now think it is shit, i NEVER thought i'd like it, but by gum, one day it will click)

i can't believe westlife managed to cover The Rose with a straight face, without cracking up and thinking of the happy hands club from Napoleon Dynamite.
That Jordan and Peter CD looks like my idea of hell. I can't believe they're planning on butchering Dolly and Kenny's classic track. Quick let's find the warehouse where all the CDs currently pressed and shop-ready are being stored, burn them and then burn the master recording. It's a travesty. Either that or we could start some sort of Peter Andre/child-sex-pest rumour just in time for the album to be pulled.

Yeh total Deja Vu ...Beyonce is class, always is

but Wigwam are erm kinda borderline averagely ok (despite the hairdoo)....so prob why they are a bit less successful

Slightly uplifted by the fact that Girls Aloud have now managed to put out a decent single at last (still awful live and should be banned from doing albums / singing in public)

Anyway the real evils in the world are Sharon Ozborne, Razorlight and Orson, My Chemical Romance, Bono and the ever lurking spectres of Phil Collins and Wackson Jackson. Sting, fortunately, is dead I think.

But yeh, Gwen is back to save us all. New single is in-credible!!!!
